People may have some unclear memories of their childhood, but almost everyone will remember the beautiful princess and the cruel queen in “Snow White”, the little girl and the big gray wolf in “Little Red Riding Hood”. 1 For example, “True love can overcome anything”, and “Even a frog can turn into a prince”. However, at a certain age, we start to learn new things about life, especially that love doesn’t always win, and that a frog is just a frog.
2 Just look at cartoons like “The Lion King” and “Frozen”, which have millions of fans young and old. And this year’s Lucerne Festival in Switzerland —a classical music festival —will also feature the themes of “Childhood” and “Fairy tales”.
“Fairy tales endure because they are the stories of our lives in their most stripped down form,” wrote US author Laura Packer. “They are stories of love and loss, desire and death, riches and ruin.” 3 But if children only see just one side, adults usually see the other. For example, in the movie “Maleficent”, we’re told the tale of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the evil(邪恶)queen. 4 Instead, she suffers great losses growing up, leading to the creation of her “evil” side. And in US author James Finn Gamer’s book “Politically Correct Bedtime Stories”, he tells the classic story of “Little Red Riding Hood”, but with a modern touch.
5 They may usually start with “Once upon a time but as we grow older, we learn that every story doesn’t always need a happily ever after” to be a good one.
A. Fairy tales are all about reality. B. But somehow, our love for fairy tales never dies. C. Most of us get our earliest life lessons from fairy tales. D. The theme of fairy tales is to teach people courage and kindness. E. It looks like fairy tales aren’t just stories our parents read us at bedtime. F. Unlike the children's version (视角) of the story, we see that the queen wasn’t born this way.

Debating(辩论)with AI(人工智能)
Have you ever shouted at your computer because it wasn’t working 1 AI researchers are now working on computers that can argue and perhaps even win debates with humans.
IBM scientists wrote an article in Nature on March 17 about their new AI system(系统)—Project Debater. It can debate with people independently in front of live audiences. After listening to arguments from its opponent (对手), the system can search around 400 million online articles in less than five minutes. 2
The system testing began in 2019 when it debated with Harish, a professional debater who holds the world record for most debate competition victories. 3 And the AI system argued for supporting this idea. Although the AI lost the debate in the end depending on the audience's opinions, the audience said it did very well. Interestingly, 58 percent of the audience said that Project Debater increased their knowledge about the topic. 4 Also, Project Debater made unforgettable opening in the debate, according to Scientific American.
After competing with different human debaters, the AI system’s performance keeps a little lower. 5 _“On stage, Project Debater is far from perfect, and its missteps show just how difficult—and low human-argumentation and debate are,” said computer scientist Chris Reed of the University of Dundee in the UK.
A. Your computer couldn’t “shout” back—until now. B. While only 20 percent said the same about Harish. C. It looks for ideas that can support its own argument. D. Humans and technology have been facing off for years. E. The debate topic was whether or not preschool should be given money to. F. In other words, the back- and-forth arguments in the AI system’s debates don’t sound like a real human conversation.
