Betty lived in a small town. Beautiful flowers were seen everywhere in the town. Because of the shyness, Betty just stood with few words in public. The shy girl hardly talked to people in social activities. She was often considered as a quiet girl in the community. She felt like a wallflower and wondered if she would go unnoticed all the time.
However, her closest friend, Fiona, was completely different. Fiona loved to communicate with others and she encouraged Betty to change. She told Betty that life wasn’t always as beautiful as roses and that everyone was able to make it full of roses.

Do you speak a dialect(方言) in daily life? While many Chinese people speak putonghua, some local dialects are in danger of disappearing(消失). To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project(中国语言资源保护工程) a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone.It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There’s an online library where people can learn dialects from over and over 5.6 million audio clips and over 5 million videos.
▲ According to Harold Palmer, a world expert on language, dialects are a key to store local cultures. Language clearly shows the history and beliefs of an area, he said.
Scholar Zhang Hongming talked about his concerns about the disappearing of dialects.“For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
So how did China make this big library?A big national effort has been put into the project to make it happen, said Cao Zhiyun, an expert on the project. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.

The Four Seasons, written by the Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi, was first played about 300 years ago. Since then, it has enjoyed worldwide popularity.
The great musical work includes four parts: “Spring”, “Summer”, “Autumn” and “Winter”. Each part brings to mind the season it is meant to describe. “Summer”, for example, begins slowly. Listeners can easily picture a hot, lazy summer day when nobody wants to move. When you listen to “Autumn”, a harvest(收获) celebration will readily come to mind.
But now, Hache Costa, a music director in Spain, has decided to give the old work a fresh feel. He says the climate(气候) today is very different from what it was in the 1700s. The Four Seasons would be “a lot dirtier” if it were written now.
Costa has “updated” the musical work to make it match the realities of the modern world. The “updated” musical work has been played in Madrid, Spain. The performance takes place in front of a screen. As the musicians play, a video shows the effects(影响) of climate change, such as forest fires and unusually dry weather.
After enjoying it, people find the new “Summer” now sounds noisier and more powerful. Because of global warming(全球变暖), the other three seasons have become shorter. Costa says he expects people to feel “really sad” after listening to the new Four Seasons.

Indoor plants might look as if they just sit around not doing much, but in many ways they are the unknown heroes of the home. Not only do they look beautiful, but studies have shown that they can increase people’s happiness by improving their mood, reducing stress and helping improve their memory. What’s more, indoor plants are easy to look after and are not very expensive.

There is also research showing that pot plants can clean the air around them by removing harmful gases, such as CO2 and the dangerous chemicals from paint or cooking.
Aloe vera, peace lilies and spider plants are some of the species that are easy to grow indoors. You can buy them from supermarkets, garden centers or online. There’s no doubt that music can lift our spirits, and a study shows that it can also help deal with physical pain.
Listening to favorite songs could help people feel less pain, according to a new study that appeared in Frontiers in Pain Research last October. And the most helpful songs were found to be sad ones describing bittersweet(苦乐参半的) and moving experiences.
The study invited 63 young adults to bring two of their favorite songs. The researchers also provided seven relaxing songs and asked the participants(参与者) to choose one from them.
Each participant was asked to stare at a screen for 7 minutes while listening to their favorite songs, one of the seven relaxing songs, or a mixed version of their favorite songs and the relaxing song they chose (they were cut into pieces and then mixed up together). For another 7 minutes, they just sat in silence. All the while, the researchers stuck a hot object to the young adults’ left arms-similar to the pain of a boiling hot teacup on your skin.
After interviewing the participants about the songs and their ratings of pain, the researchers found people felt less pain when listening to their favorite songs compared with hearing the relaxing song or nothing. The mixed songs didn’t work either. And people who listened to sad songs felt less pain than those listened to cheerful songs.
“It’s a very cool result,” said Darius Valevcius, one of the researchers. “I think it explains why so many people, including me, enjoy listening to sad music.”

Have you ever heard that you should drink eight glasses, or about two liters of water every day? Lots of grown-ups try to drink so much water to stay healthy. But guess what? Scientists have found that there isn’t a magic number of glasses of water that’s perfect for everyone.
In a big study, researchers checked out 5600 people, from little kids who are just one week old to great-grandparents who are 96 years old! They wanted to find out about “water turnover”, which is an interesting way of saying how much water goes into our body and then comes out (like when we go to the bathroom). They discovered that everyone is different when it comes to how much water they need. This can depend on things like how old you are, how long you run and play, and whether you’re a boy or not. For example, young men around 20 to 35 years old need almost twice as much water as men who are in their nineties!
Also, the scientists noticed that people who are really active and move around a lot need more water than people who don’t exercise much. And here’s a fun fact: the foods we eat also have water in them!
The people who did this study think that most of us don’t really need to drink eight glasses of water every day. It turns out that our bodies are pretty good at telling us when we’re thirsty. So, the best thing to do is listen to your body and drink water when you feel thirsty. And don’t forget that having fun is also a great way to stay healthy, just like drinking water!

①We can see circles, squares and triangles everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films? Much like colors, different shapes can show different features of characters in the scenes.
②Circles represent things that are soft and natural. The round shape reminds us of things that appear in nature, like the sun, raindrops and so on. We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies’ round faces… All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters’ bodies-heroes, good people-are round in shape, because circles represent goodness, happiness and friendliness.
③Squares show things that are unnatural or man-made, or things that are boring or old-fashioned. In Up, Carl, an elderly man, has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. These shapes show the characters’ personalities. Carl is stubborn(执拗的) and lonely, while Russell is lovely and full of energy.
④The angriest shape is the triangle. Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don’t they? That’s because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way. Look at the bad guys in cartoons-they are all drawn with plenty of points and triangles(稳固的), like Shengongbao in Ne Zha. And triangles are stable(稳固的) and don’t easily fall down. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.
⑤Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. So, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.

On the top of a tree, an old eagle raised her young. She got her food from the ocean, but this tree stood ten miles from the beach. It had long been known as the “Old Eagle Tree”.
On a warm, sunny day, the workmen were working in the fields. At a certain hour of the day, the old eagle was known to leave for the seaside to get food for her young. As she returned with a large fish, the workmen stood around the tree, shouting and throwing stones. They scared the poor bird. So she dropped her fish, and they carried it off.
The bird soon returned to her home without food. The babies at once started to cry for food. The parent bird seemed to try to comfort them, but the babies were so hungry that she couldn’t calm them down. She then stood near the babies, and looked down into the home in a manner that seemed to say, “I don’t know what to do next.” A minute later, she spread her wings and was away again for the sea.
She was away for nearly two hours, about double her usual time for a trip. When she again returned on slow, weak wings, she flew uncommonly low to have more air to support her with another fish in her claws. On nearing the field, she flew around it to see if her enemies were again there. Finding the field clear, she once again reached the tree. Again the baby eagles began to cry. But soon they became quiet, busy having their big meal.

(2024省实验二模)
What a great bird! We can learn a lesson from her. Others might give up, but this bird, at once recovering(恢复) from the loss, has tried her best to finish her task.
