Last month Alaska photographer Mark Kelley was named the winning photographer in the 2022 portfolio (照片集) type featured in the National Wildlife magazine photo contest. Kelley’s winning portfolio featured 10 photos taken over the past 13 years.
“It’s a real honor,” Kelley says. “I was blown away. My goal has always been to share Alaska one image at a time, but now 10 of my images did just that. I think for a wildlife photographer it’s the world’s highest praise.”
Although he’s originally from Buffalo, New York, Kelley said he considers himself a “Southeast guy”. He always thought his love for photography growing up was just a hobby, not something he could turn into a career. That changed when he began taking photography classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. After graduating, Kelley was able to successfully secure a photography job in Juneau, and after moving to the capital city in 1979, he never looked back.
“I fell in love with Juneau,” he says. Kelley says he was drawn to Anan Creek and the animals surrounding it because the location is Southeast Alaskan. He says each photo shows the continuous rain, towering trees and green forest that makes the region unlike other parts of Alaska. But, beyond the location, what brings the area to life is the plentiful wildlife that lives among the rainforest.
Kelley says that for each of the chosen 10 photos, thousands were taken to find those exact moments. Each visit included three to four days standing on a viewing platform in hopes of catching those special moments. Moments like that come in the blink of an eye, but when shot, it makes all those long hours of waiting worth it.
24. What do the underlined words “blown away” probably mean in paragraph 2
A. Thankful. B. Excited. C. Anxious. D. Confused.
25. What experience was important for Kelley becoming a photographer
A. His visit to Southeast Alaska. B. His love for award-winning photos.
C. His college learning experience. D. His meeting with plentiful wildlife.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Why Anan Creek is attractive to Kelley. B. How Kelley describes his special days.
C. Why wildlife is plentiful in Anan Creek. D. How Kelley takes those winning photos.
27. What quality of Kelley is shown in the last paragraph
A. Curious. B. Brave. C. Calm. D. Patient.
C
Australia is a nation of car owners with a rapidly ageing population. Drivers aged over70 have nearly doubled in number in the past 20 years. The trend is the same for hospitalization and deaths due to accidents involving older drivers. It can be difficult to know what to do if you have concerns about someone’s driving.
Many changes that happen with advancing age can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. Eyesight or hearing can have an effect on some of the more obvious skills needed for safe driving. Advancing age can also lead to dangerous driving, including our ability to plan effectively, think quickly and react properly.
So, should regular health exam of drivers over a certain age be mandatory (强制的) Some Australian states require it, while others don’t. However, early research showed old drivers in regions with strict rules were not likely to be injured or killed in a traffic accident than people in states with voluntary reporting requirements. This finding points to the need for multi-tiered (多层次的)—rather than simply age-based—judgement for recognizing older at-risk drivers.
Australia’s national driver medical guidelines only outline the lowest standards that people should meet to be considered medically safe to drive. The guidelines don’t outline how we can help older people recognize the signs of declining driving ability. Requiring older drivers to complete an advanced driving test would clearly show whether they are fit to drive. However, these tests are very expensive, impractical and difficult.
Cognitive screening (认知筛查) tests are a practical solution to test for a decline in many functions needed for driving, such as vision, cognition and motor abilities. This approach might help provide a standard way to quickly recognize Australian drivers who are most at risk. Choosing a vehicle that provides the best protection can also make a difference.
28. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 1
A. To show more old people in Australia are starting to learn to drive.
B. To show car accidents in Australia have shot up in the past 20 years.
C. To show why the number of drivers is still increasing in Australia.
D. To show how old drivers have endangered road safety in Australia.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Necessary skills ignored by old drivers. B. Common diseases among the old drivers.
C. Changes affecting old drivers’ safe driving. D. Rules made about old drivers’ safe driving.
30. What does the finding of the early research in paragraph 3 suggest
A. Voluntary reporting requirements for older drivers differ a lot in Australia.
B. Some older drivers found it hard to understand some difficult traffic rules.
C. Voluntary helpers contributed a lot to the safety of older drivers on roads.
D. Age-based judgement wasn’t enough to help recognize older at-risk drivers.
31. What might be the most practical way for Australia to test a person’s fitness to drive
A. Increasing the frequency of driving tests. B. Outlining the driver’s medical guidelines.
C. Making an advanced driving test a must. D. Carrying out cognitive screening tests.
D
Increasing the numbers of a small parasitic wasp (寄生蜂) could help control the brown marmorated stink bug (茶翅蝽), a harmful pest endangering crops including apples, cherries and corn. The wasp, which is from Europe, lays its eggs inside those of the pest, where its young develop by feeding on the host egg.
Alessia Lacovone at Bioplanet, an Italian biocontrol company, and her co-workers released (释放) 325,000 of the wasps over the summer of 2020. This took place at the places where fruit trees are grown and the pest was known to be present.
The team then collected stink bug eggs to find out how many had been discovered by the wasps and how effectively they had been attacked. At release sites, a wasp discovered 31 percent of the stink bug egg masses and adult wasps came out from 17 percent of the discovered eggs, while at comparative sites where no release took place, these rates were 1.7 and 1.2 percent, respectively.
In addition to these increases, the researchers found that the release of a wasp had no effect on parasitism (寄生) by naturally occurring wasps of the same species, as well as by Trissolcus mitsukurii, another harmful wasp species that also targets the bug’s eggs. Iacovone says the true effect of the wasp release is likely to be even greater than simply looking at successful parasitism suggests, since the adult wasps also feed on the stink bug eggs.
“A wasp is a common egg parasitoid (卵寄生蜂) in parts of Europe and this report is encouraging, showing that increasing releases of this species improve parasitism of brown marmorated stink bug egg masses,” says Glen Powell at the Royal Horticultural Society.
32. What can be learned about the brown marmorated stink bug from paragraph 1
A. It lays its eggs inside the wasp. B. Its feeding list includes fruits.
C. It develops by eating host eggs. D. It comes from Europe originally.
33. Why did the team collect stink bug eggs
A. To judge stink bugs’ living ability. B. To know the result of wasp attacks.
C. To explain why the eggs occur in masses. D. To find where stink bugs lay their eggs.
34. What’s Powell’s attitude to the findings
A. Worried. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Uncaring.
35. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Wasp Release Controls Stink Bug Attack B. Parasitic Wasps Increase Harmful Pest
C. Parasitic Wasp Strategy Benefits Stink Bug D. Egg-Laying Wasps help Crop Pests Out

第四部分 应用文写作(满分15分)
Dear George,
I’m sorry to hear that you are in conflict with your parents due to some trivial matters. Try the following suggestions, and see if they will help.
First, be patient with your parents and put yourself in their shoes. The key to solving the problem is honest communication. Explain your actions and feelings calmly, listen carefully, and address their concerns. Besides, try to see things from their point of view. Possibly, you’ll learn to back down and they’ll relax their control.
Hope you’ll find these suggestions helpful and make up with your parents soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
