Let’s clean up the ocean together!
We all know it’s important to have dreams. However, to make the dreams come true is not an easy thing. A young Dutch (荷兰的) man named Boyan enjoys working hard to make his dreams come true.
When Boyan was 16, he went diving (潜水) in Greece. He was shocked to see more plastic bags than fish in the sea. The boy made up his mind to clean up the ocean. However, everyone told him that there was nothing he could do. The teenager didn’t give up. He spent several months studying plastic pollution. Finally, he came up with a science project using floating barriers (漂浮的栅栏) to collect the waste. That is to say, instead of using nets and ships to collect the plastic bags, the barriers can make the plastic bags come together with the help of natural ocean currents (洋流) and winds. What’s more, the collected plastic bags can be recycled and made into products or oil.
Boyan won prizes for the project, but that was not enough for him: he wanted to make it a reality. Then he set up The Ocean Cleanup. Together with scientists, engineers and volunteers, the young man is working hard to clean up the ocean to make our world a better place.
Would you like to join them

Thanks to Earth, we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. It seems that we think it just natural to get these things. 21
Among all the environmental challenges, climate change sits at the top. Global average temperatures have risen by more than 0.5 C since 1992. A half-degree temperature rise is a big deal. It means that heat waves can last around a third longer and rainstorms will be about a third stronger. 22 Countries like Singapore and Tokyo may be covered by the sea in the future.
But this is not the only problem people are facing. 23 Ocean pollution has become serious. Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have dropped by nearly 30 percent.
24 More than two-thirds of the world's wildlife could be gone in 10 years if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Many wild animals including the black rhino (犀牛) are endangered.
However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层) smaller. 25
This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of waste in your hand is recyclable or not To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to divide the waste. The students called the bin Waste Collection Point.
The bin uses a camera to know the kind of the waste and divides it into plastic, paper, glass or other kinds. To make sure the bin can divide waste correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took over 500 pictures of each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles (角度), so it has a better rate of accuracy (精确度),” said one of the students.
The students had the idea of the smart bin two years ago because they saw a lot of rubbish here and there in their village. Every weekend, they had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.
The students decided to invent a special recycling bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. Although the school ended at 2 p.m., the team members would continue to work on their invention until 6 or 7 p.m. at school.
“Our bin is now in its third generation (代). Before graduation, we hope that it can be widely used in the city.” The students said, “Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle waste and protect our environment.”
