tiredness. The cheers of the crowd disappeared into the background as
Eric's voice caught all of my attention, guiding me forward. Finally,
together with Eric, I crossed the finish line. I couldn't believe it. Tears
welled up in my eyes as I realized I'd finally made it as a marathon runner.
Seeing me achieve this milestone, Eric's eyes shone with pride and
happiness.
I hugged Eric close and felt truly thankful. It was his selflessness
and belief in me that pushed me to achieve a dream I once thought
impossible. Thinking back to that unforgettable day, I realized the true
meaning of friendship. Eric not only helped me face my physical
challenges but also taught me the power of never giving up.Together, we
showed that with determination and a supportive friend by your side, any
challenge can be solved.

less intensity again.

always in your best interest to book your summer vacation early.(尽早预

Growing up, I hated exercise, but things changed when I turned 40.I developed a
painful thing in my neck caused by weight increases. I was told it wasn't dangerous
but could lead to long-term pain. I knew I had to make a change.
I began doing 15 minutes of jumping rope at home or swimming at my local gym
daily. I also cut out the chocolate and fast food and introduced a healthier diet.
I felt fitter and happier within just a few days of moving more and eating more
healthily, but this kind of lifestyle change isn't always easy for women in my country.
It's considered a cultural custom(风俗) for women to avoid showing their skin (皮肤)
in public, which can make gymwear and swimwear difficult. This means many women
3
{#{QQABDYaEogiAAAJAAAhCUwFCCgMQkhCCAQgOAAAIoAAAiBNABAA=}#}
aren't taught to swim as children.
I wanted to prove to other women in my country that showing your skin and
exercising for your own health is nothing to feel bad about. I felt the need to help them
experience the confidence swimming was giving me.
With the support of my parents, I began sharing photos and videos of myself in
swimwear and actively swimming on social media. I received so many comments
from other women thanking me and asking me to teach them how to swim. It was a
big deal for them to see me, in my 40s, taking swimming so seriously and having such
huge rewards, and I jumped at the chance to help them.
Now, three months later, I' m a swimming teacher with a waiting list of 40
women who I teach in person, in small groups at my local gym. My goal is to make it
accessible to everyone; if my mum can jump into the-water and do tumble turns at 71,
anyone can.

26.What is the author's parents’ attitude toward her sharing her swimming

Dogs wag (摇摆) their tails in different directions depending on whether they are
excited and wanting to move forward or threatened and thinking of moving back, a
study has found.
Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behavior of 30 dogs, catching their

responses to a range of stimuli (刺激物) with video cameras. To conduct the study
they chose 15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged between one and six years. The
dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part in the
experiment at Bari University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an
opening at the front to allow for them to view various stimuli. They were tested one at
a time.
The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste
found that when the dogs were shown their owners—a positive experience—their tails
wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human
they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat
again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less intensity again. The appearance
of a large unfamiliar dog, similar to a German shepherd, changed the direction of tail
wagging to the left. Researchers thought the dog was thinking of moving back. When
the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the left,
suggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not
easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help
people judge the mood of puter and video systems, for example, could be
used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were
required to approach.
28. The video cameras were used to catch the dogs’ responses because________.
A. it was easier to catch the dogs’ response changes in the tail wagging
B. the dogs were put in the wooden boxes and tested one at a time
C. they enabled the dogs’ owners to know about their dogs’ habit
D. the dogs wagged their tails in different directions when they were in different
moods
29. The underlined word “intensity” in paragraph 3 means________.
A. Surprise B. worry C. excitement D. interest
30. When there are no stimuli, a dog will ________.
A. wag to the left B. wag to the right
C. not wag at all D. wag to the left and then to the right
31. The purpose of doing the experiment is ________.
A. to train dogs for their owners B. to help people judge the mood of dogs
C. to help dogs find company D. to help people choose their pet dogs

Plastic (塑料) is everywhere. According to the United Nations, a lot of rubbish is
thrown into waterways. There's plastic litter at the bottom of the sea and on top of
mountains. Now plastic has been found in another unlikely place: on the backs of
hermit crabs(寄居蟹). According to a study, hermit crabs are using plastic litter as
shells (壳). Zuzanna Jagiello is a scientist at the University of Warsaw, in Poland.
She's the study's lead author.“Hermit crabs don' t have homes, so they use rubbish.”
Hermit crabs are small, soft-bodied crabs that live near the sea. To protect
themselves, the crabs usually wear seashells that have been left behind by dead sea
snails(海螺).However, according to the study, at least386 hermit crabs have been
found wearing litter. Of the world's 16 kinds of hermit crabs that live on land, 10 have
been seen wearing litter. Nearly nine out of every 10 of those crabs were wearing
plastic waste, such as bottle caps. The others wore glass.
Jagiello says that she and her team first learned about hermit crabs wearing litter
when they noticed photos of them posted online. They decided to learn more by doing
research.
Scientists aren't sure why hermit crabs are choosing litter instead of snail shells.
But they have several ideas. Some sea snail populations are going down. Hermit crabs
could be turning to litter because they can't find enough seashells. It's also possible
that crabs choose plastic because it's light and easy to carry. Or they’re drawn to its
colors.
Scientists agree that plastic pollution badly influences wild animals in many
ways. But it isn't clear that the crabs are in any danger.“It's a great example of the
beauty of adaptation, how some animals are living with humans,"Jagiello says. “What
are the long-term influences of these adaptations We don't know."
32. What do we know about hermit crabs
A. They prefer to live in deep water. B. They are badly harmed by plastic.
C. Many of them have been seen wearing plastic waste.
D. Most of them like glass because of its brightness.
33. What led scientists to do research on hermit crabs
A. Studies carried out by Polish scientists.
B. A report from the United Nations.
C. Requirements of nature lovers.
D. Online photos of hermit crabs.

C. By explaining research results. D.By following time order.
35. What does Jagiello think about the hermit crabs’ behavior
A. She believes it shows they can deal with the changing environment.
B. She believes it can help them live peacefully with humans.
C. She worries it is having a bad influence on other animals.
D. She worries it will make them lose their living space.

Because of my limp (跛行 )since childhood, I never thought about running a
marathon. However, when my head teacher said last Friday that a campus marathon
was coming up, I really wanted to take part. Considering my physical condition, I
started to feel afraid of signing up.
When my friend Eric learned of my situation, he volunteered to be my running
partner, determined to help me reach the finish line.
Our training journey was challenging yet satisfying. We spent countless hours
running together, starting with short distances and slowly increasing our running
distance. Eric's encouragement and patience were important in keeping me active.
One autumn morning, we set out for our first long training run. With each step, I
felt the weight of my leg, but Eric encouraged me to push through. “Keep going and
you've got this!” Eric's voice rang through the air. As the weeks passed, I noticed great
improvements in my distance and speed. Eric celebrated each small victory I made
and I was gradually getting the confidence and courage to take part in the marathon.
On race day, we stood among a large group of runners. Nervous, I looked at Eric,
who gave me a comforting smile. When everything was ready, we set off.
The first few miles were hard. My limp became more noticeable, and doubts came
into my mind. But Eric's presence was a great source of encouragement. He cheered
me on,reminding me of our months of preparation.
As we neared the end of the marathon, I could see the finish line in sight. But
then, just meters away from the finish line, I fell. Pain went through my leg, and at
that time, I thought about giving up.
“We're almost there! Don't give up!” Eric, running beside me, shouted loudly.
