It was a beautiful5-kilometer course. This particular race was our team’s 35 , and I was proud to be sharing the course with competitors from other schools. It also meant a lot 36 an ordinary race -- that my parents were there to cheer me on.
With so much to 37 that day, I was ready to run! And I didn’t want to be stuck with other runners, as is 38 at the beginning of most cross-country races. So when the gun sounded, I 39 running, leaving everyone else in the dust.

Not until you’re out of sight of the audience!” I was in pain, but I kept up my pace until I reached 45 . 46 I was among the trees, I slowed way down.
I enjoyed most races, even while 47 myself, but this one was not enjoyable in the least. I finished the race, but in 48 near the time I could have if I’d paced myself well from the beginning. Every time I 49 that cross-country season, I’m reminded of something: Pride is no 50 for pace.

Bicycles on Campus
Operation
Cyclists shall always ride bikes in a safe, controlled manner on campus. Rules and regulations shall be learned and respected at all times. Watch out for pedestrians and other cyclists, and always use your lights in dark conditions.
Theft Prevention
Always securely lock your bicycle to a bicycle rack—even if you are only away for a minute. Register your bike with the University Department of Public Safety. It is fast, easy, and free. Upon registration, the system permanently records your serial number, which is useful in the possible recovery of the bike stolen.
Equipment
Brakes Make sure that they are in good working condition and adjusted properly.
Helmet A necessity, make sure your helmet meets safety standards and fits properly.
Lights Always have a front headlight—visible at least500 feet in front of the bike. A taillight is a good idea.
Rules of the Road
Riding on Campus As a bicycle rider, you have a responsibility to ride only on streets and designated bicycle paths. Riding on sidewalks or other walkways can result in a fine. Currently, a 15mph speed limit has been issued for bicycles on campus, unless otherwise stated. Always give the right of way to pedestrians. If involved in an accident, it is required that you offer appropriate aid, call the Campus Police Department and remain at the scene until you are let go by an officer.
Bicycle Parking Only park in areas reserved for bikes. Trees, handrails, hallways, and sign posts are not for bicycle parking, and parking in such spots can result in a fine.
If Things Go Wrong
Should you break the rules, you will be fined. Besides violating rules while riding bicycles on campus, you could be fined for:

If the findings of a bunch of new climatic researches conducted recently are any guide, we are rapidly approaching major climate change and the effects on society as well as the environment could be quite severe. Geographers have made a prediction that within the future eighty years, current world climate zones could shift and chances are that some could completely disappear. Polar regions will get colder while tropical regions will get even hotter, forcing animals to migrate north.
Climate changes like these could lead to the spread of diseases. Tropical storms and hurricanes will not only increase in numbers but in intensity as well. If the changes come too quickly, animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could face extinction.
According to Science Daily, a new study predicts that by the year 2100, many of today’s familiar climates will be replaced by climates unknown in today’s world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of these far-reaching consequences for the sake of the whole world. The planet earth itself has been showing signs of change, which concerns the scientific community deeply. In 2004, a serious tsunami created by a major earthquake killed thousands in Sumatra and in2008, thousands died in China because of another severe earthquake. Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was devastated in 2010 by yet another massive earthquake.
Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously expected. At this point, it doesn’t matter what’s causing it, but rather, what can be done about it. What’s more, our world is getting more and more unstable every year. There has been war and threat of war everywhere. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious.
However, astronomical observations have been showing signs that other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection behind such mysterious phenomena. Yet no one knows anything for sure at this point because there is simply not enough data.
56.What does the underlined word “devastated” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.shocked. B.destroyed. C.frightened D.impacted.
57.The examples of several destructive earthquakes are used to support the idea that ________.
A.Earthquakes have caused significant damage to the human society.
B.leasures must be taken to prevent future earthquakes from causing damage.
C.Some major changes seem to be taking place on the planet earth.
D.The probability of more earthquakes happening in the future remains strong.
58.According to the fourth paragraph, how should we react to climate change
A.We should explore the reasons for climate change.
B.We should explore possible measures to deal with it.
C.We should stop environmental pollution completely
D.We should plan to move to other planets as soon as possible.
59.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Species won’t become extinct as long as climate change happens slowly.
B.There’s enough data at hand for us to predict the future of climate change.
C.The world is getting more unstable because of large-scale migration.
D.The earth is not alone in experiencing major climate changes currently.
60.Which of the following would be the best summary of the passage
A.How our planet should be protected from climate change.
B.What could be done to practically cope with climate change.
C.We should beware of the unpromising future of climate change.
D.The passage serves as an introduction to climate change and its effects.
C.
Entire cities and counties have banned them. McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken have declared to give them up—as have Starbucks, Ruby Tuesday, and a large number of other former sources of wicked pleasures. In response to the 2006 Food and Drug Administration requirement that trans fats be listed on nutrition labels, makers of packaged goods have brought their totals down to zero. Last month, Frito-Lay even got the FDA’s blessing to put a claim on products loaded with healthy, unsaturated(不饱和)fats that replacing bad fats with good ones may protect consumers against heart disease.
Does this mean that junk food is now the new healthy food “No!” says Robert Eckel, former president of the American Heart Association, whose “Face the Fats” education campaign points out that a “zero trans fats” label doesn’t tell the whole story. “People know trans fats are not good for them.” says Eckel. “But they do not understand that replacing them with saturated fat is not a good option.” And that, in some cases, is what’s happening. Yes, the food industry is experimenting with ways to keep the saturated fat content low—by using unsaturated options such as canola and sunflower oils, for example. But some manufacturers, unwilling to sacrifice taste and texture, are turning back to less-than-healthful choices such as palm oil and butter.
Baked goods have proved particularly unwilling to change. The solid fats that provide their light texture flakiness as well as the rich flavor typically are either highly saturated or are “partially hydrogenated(氢化)” oils that contain trans fats. Makers of fried foods have had an easier task, since certain liquid unsaturated oils can do as tasty a job. Snack makers, too, have found the switch to be relatively manageable.
Manufacturers are raising nutrition experts’ eyebrows with other tricks, too. Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard whose research showed that trans fats promote heart disease, says that some companies now are fully, rather than partially, hydrogenating vegetable oil. Full hydrogenation doesn’t create trans fats as it mainly solidifies the oil, but it does produce an acid, a saturated fat which seems in preliminary research to promote inflammation(炎症)、 thus contributing to heart disease. “I’m not in favor of using totally hydrogenated oil until more is known,” he says.
A recent study by the International Food Information Council Foundation shows that about 42 percent of Americans- - a 9 percent increase over last year, are trying to cut back on certain healthy fats along with trans fats. “All people hear is that fat is bad, bad, had”, says Susan Borra, president of the foundation. “In fact, most people need more of the good kinds.”
61.McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken have pledged to get rid of _______.
A.wicked pleasures B.trans fats
C.nutritious fats. D.unsaturated fats
62.To which of the following statements would Robert Eck el most likely agree
A.“Zero trans fats” label tells that the food is healthy for sure.
B.Junk food is now regarded as the new health food.
C.It’s not necessarily good to replace trans fats with saturated fats.
D.People don’t realize that trans fats are harmful.
63.According to Paragraph 3, food makers are reluctant to give up solid fats in baked goods in that _______.
A.They contribute to consumer’s health in some way
B.they are partially hydrogenated and thus contain no trans fats
C.They are highly saturated and protect consumers against heart diseases
D.They allow baked goods to have pleasant texture and tasty flavors
64.When solidifying the oil, fully hydrogenation might ________.
A.Lead to a certain disease indirectly B.create trans fats
C.generate unsaturated fats D.contribute to fatal injury
65.The last paragraph suggests that _______.
A.Most Americans try to reduce healthy fats as well as trans fats
B.People have a widespread misunderstanding of fats as a whole
C.Fat is all bad without any beneficial effect on human bodies
D.A total of51 percent of Americans tried less healthy fats last year
D.
Treasure hunts have inspired people’s imagination for hundreds of years, both in real life and in books, such as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. In 1979, Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real thrill of a treasure hunt with clues found in a book when he wrote a children’s story, Masqueracde. The book was about a hare(野兔), and a month before it came out, Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of “red herrings”, or false clues, to mislead them.
Ken Roberts, the man who finally found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he actually found it by logic, not by chance. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue in the very beginning. He had realized that the words: “One of Six to Eight” under the first picture in the book connected the hare, in some way, to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII’s six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought it was there that Williams had buried the hare. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea· occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent most of his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well. However, he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learned from locals that they had been built in her honor in 1773
Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams, so as to find out if he was wasting his time there. To his delight, Williams encouraged him to continue with the efforts, and on February 24th, 1982, he found the treasure at last. It was worth 3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had brought about since its burial made it much more valuable.
66.The underlined word “them” in paragraph1most probably refers to _______.
A.the red herrings B.the treasure hunters
C.Henry VIII’s six wives D.the readers of Masquerade
67.What is the critical clue in the story to help Ken Roberts find the gold hare

第Ⅱ卷 主观题(共35分)
第四部分:写作(满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
For a clearer picture of what the student knows, most teachers use another kind of examination in addition to objective tests. They use “essay tests”, which require students to write long answers to broad, general questions such as the following, “mention several ways in which Mahatma Gandhi has affected the thinking of people in his own country and in other parts of the world.”
One advantage of the essay test is that it reduces the element of luck. The student cannot get a high score just by making a lucky guess. Another advantage is that it shows the examiner more about the student’s ability to put facts together into what he has thought about the subject. Sometimes, essay tests have disadvantages, too. Some students are able to write rather good answers without really knowing much about the subject, while other students who actually know the material have trouble expressing their ideas in essay form.
Besides, on an essay test the student’s score may depend upon the examiner’s feelings at the time reading the answer. If he is feeling tired or bored, the student may receive a lower score than he should. Another examiner reading the same answer might give it a much higher mark. From this viewpoint, the objective test gives each student a fairer chance, and naturally it is easier and quicker to score.
Whether an objective test or an essay test is used, problems arise. When some objective questions are used along with some essay questions, however, a fairly clear picture of the student’s knowledge can usually be gained.
71.Please explain the underlined phrases in English.(No more than 8 words)
72.What are the advantages of the essay test over the objective one (No more than 15words)
73.Why can some students not knowing much about a subject score high in essay tests (No more than 12 words)

75.If you were a teacher, which type of test would you prefer Give your reasons.(No more than20words)

Dear Chris,
Glad to hear from you and I can see you are greatly annoyed with group learning. As far as I am concerned, it will be unwise of you to quit your study group.
Group learning can benefit us in numerous ways. To begin with, you will be able to cooperation with other students and solve complex problems more easily. In the meantime, getting various insights into an issue will make your own comprehension of it well-rounded, which is a good way to broaden your horizons as well.
We’ve been friends for a long time and based on what I know about you, you may be too shy to share your views in a group discussion. All you need to do is have more confidence in yourself and be open-minded to new ideas. Just relax and don’t be afraid of making mistakes because we all do.
I hope you will find my advice helpful and should you have further problems, don’t hesitate to write back.
Best wishes!
