三、阅读理解
Can dogs tell the time with their noses According to a recent study, it may be true. Dogs have been known to pick up smells that humans can’t, but they may also be able to tell the time by using their noses.
“As each day has a new smell, your dog can notice these changes,” explains a dog expert and university teacher, Professor Alexandra Horowitz. The dog expert talks about the idea in her new-book Being a Dog: Following the Dog into a World of Smell.
Most humans usually experience the world with their eyes. For dogs: their world is based on smells. Dogs are often trained to search for drugs, explosives, and dead bodies with their noses.
The dog expert believes that dogs can notice very small changes in smells during the day, giving them a feeling to judge (判断) the time. “Smells in a room change as the day goes on. Hot air rises, and it usually rises along the walls and will rise to the ceiling and go to the center of the room and drop,” Alexandra explains, “The dog, I think, can smell time through the movement of the air in the room,” she adds.
This could explain why a dog can tell when its owner is expected to return home. If a smart dog is able to notice the changes in its owner’s home after he or she leaves the house, it may be able to predict when its owner is expected to come back.

There’s nothing quite like falling sound asleep after a full day of work. Like people, animals need to rest after working hard. Some animals sleep in water. Others dig hoes under the ground. Some even sleep high in trees or under leaves. But they all find a way to rest.

Some animals sleep under the ground. Chipmunks (花栗鼠) sleep curled up (蜷缩) in a ball. Their beds are made of leaves and grass. In winter, they sleep for two weeks and wake up to eat the stored food. Then they go back to sleep for another two weeks before waking up again. Some desert frogs dig underground holes during the hot, dry season. A frog may stay in its hole for months.
High above the ground, monkeys find leafy places in trees each evening before they sleep. The tall trees help to keep monkeys safe during the night. People call lions the kings of the animal world. Lions usually live in the wild in Africa and India. Lions in Africa can go without water for up to one month, so they have no trouble if there is no water for a long time.
Without question, lions are also one of the most popular animals in zoos. Almost every zoo around the world has a few lions. It is very easy for people to tell male(雄性) and female(雌性) lions. Lions are the only kind of cat that shows this strong difference between males and females. A male lion has a mane, a large collar of hair around its face. Female do not have manes. Male lions are also larger than females. A male lion usually weighs about 200 kilograms. Both male and female lions have very strong mouths. They can break the backs of animals with one bite. One lion will usually kill between one and twenty animals each year for food.
It is unusual for lions to kill people. However, in 1898 two lions killed and ate over one hundred people in Kenya before an Englishman named P. J. Patterson killed them. Many years later, a 1996 Hollywood movie called The Ghost and the Darkness told this story.
