The Wampanoag language was not dead. To call it dead would be an insult to the ancestors who left it for future generations as a way to communicate-and a way to teach. But it was “unspoken” until linguist Jessie “Little Doe” Baird brought it back. Her project’s Wampanoag dictionary holds more than 11,000 entries.
Words on paper are not a language. A language lives through the people who speak it. So Baird founded the Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project. She teaches community classes and family camps. Kids in grade school and high school have the opportunity to learn the language.
The Wampanoags have lived for 12000 years in Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island. When the Pilgrims (清教徒) met the first Indigenous people, those were the Wampanoags. The English settlers brought disease that killed thousands-an estimated two-thirds of the Wampanoag Nation died-as well as war and rules that fragmented (分裂) the tribes. There once were 69 tribes in the nation; now there are three. Baird is a citizen of the Mashpee tribe. Her ancestors left a key to their language. They translated the King James Bible into Wampanoag. They left hundreds of documents in their written alphabet (字母表).
Baird describes a vision she had where her ancestors helped her see it was time to bring the language home. She began her research, which led her to a graduate degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she learned from and worked with other linguists. In 2010, she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, earning a “genius grant” to further her work.
“It’s incredibly difficult to reclaim a language, even more so when there are no speakers alive, and even more so when you’re driving 90 minutes a day, each way, to attend graduate school, with four small children at home.”
“I might have been afraid to do the work had I known that,” Baird says with a laugh now.
“But I didn’t, and so here we are.”
24. What is the situation of the Wampanoag language
A. It has entirely gone by now.
B. It is being brought back to life.
C. It is a compulsory course in schools.
D. It has got well-recognized in the USA.
25. What may contribute to the downfall of Wampanoag
A. The wide use of English in the new land.
B. The religious change of the Wampanoags.
C. The sharp reduced population of Wampanoag.
D. The shortage of reference books on the language.
26. What’s the key element of saving the Wampanoag language
A. The local linguists lend a timely hand.
B. Children are asked to learn the language.
C. The government gives the financial support.
D. The materials ancestors left lay the foundation.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Jessie Baird
A. Determined and responsible B. Considerate and ambitious
C. Intelligent and kind-hearted D. Independent and adaptable

When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course, I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something different.
Through the course of my school life, I’ve gradually developed a new understanding of the word “prioritization (优先次序)”. The first thing I wish to get in Senior 1 is the ability to manage my time better. I’ll surely become busier with the coming semester, and proper organization is important. From school clubs to academic competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn’t influence my health, which leads me to my second goal.
My mother has always told me to put my health first, so in the future, I hope to be both physically and mentally healthy. A person can’t study without having the energy to do so. In order to stay energetic, they must put their health first, no matter how busy they are, or how much work they have to complete.
And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged by my failure and never give up on my dreams. I hope that I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the world. We should all respect one another’s likes and dislikes, and focus on each other’s strengths, not our weaknesses. Everyone should try to take part in all of life’s opportunities.
Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” In my case, it’s the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance—the balance between studies and activities, efficiency and procrastination (拖延症), academics and health, passions and dislikes. The new journey is going to be a hard one, but if I establish these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.
28. During this school year, what does the author hopes to do
A. Focus on improving her overall grades.
B. Join as many school clubs as possible.
C. Learn how to manage her time well.
D. Spend more time on outdoor activities.
29. According to the article, which of the following should students do
A. Always put their studies first. B. Don’t be afraid of failing.
C. Only do what they’re good at. D. Make different kinds of friends.
30. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean
A. A strong feeling of dislike. B. A strong feeling of love.
C. A strong feeling of anger. D. A strong feeling of joy.
31. What does the author intend to do
A. Show what she likes about high school life.
B. Stress the importance of health to students.
C. Show how to balance our studies and activities.
D. Share her goals for the coming high school year.

The Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023, produced by data company Lighthouse, looked at leading cities from around the world and ranked them on criteria (标准) including tourism, sustainability, economic performance and health and safety. Paris has once again been named the world’s most attractive city destination.
Europe took the lead, with seven out of the top 10 cities and 63 countries in the top 100. The only non-European cities in the top 10 were Dubai at No. 2, Tokyo at No. 4 and New York at No.8. Madrid came third, while Amsterdam, Berlin and Rome were at Nos. 5, 6 and 7 respectively. Barcelona and then London rounded out the top 10. Asia did well in the top 20 as Singapore(11), Seoul(14), Osaka(16) and Hong Kong(17) all made the list.
The report owes Europe’s success to “fast-paced urbanization (城市化) and widespread technology adoption”. Travelers now focus on high-speed internet, flexible booking options and spaces for remote working. The report said, “Improving sustainability, transportation networks and social impact are some of the key goals cities are embracing today to increase competitiveness, improve their tourism offer and deliver a perfect customer journey.”
Tokyo entered the top 10 for the first time, which the report says is because of improved tourism infrastructure (基础设施), the easing of Covid-19-related regulations and the weakened Yen—which offers international visitors great value for money.
Istanbul topped the list for the number of international arrivals in 2023, followed by London and then Dubai. The cities with the biggest year-on-year growth were Hong Kong (2,495%) and Bangkok (142%).
32. Which city ranked as the most attractive city in 2023
A. New York. B. Rome. C. Paris. D. London.
33. What do travelers pay attention to now
A. Free internet connection. B. Flexible booking choices.
C. Larger spaces for fun. D. Cheaper transportation.
34. Why did Tokyo enter the top 10
A. Fast-paced urbanization. B. Widespread technology adoption.
C. The outbreak of Covid-19. D. Better tourism infrastructure.
35. Where does this passage most possibly come from

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
67. From the time I was seven, I had a dream of becoming a member of the Students Union. I always admired my school leaders for taking responsibility for all of us. So I dreamed of being a leader.
Years flew by, and soon I was able to take part in the elections, hoping I would win. But the reality was that I hadn’t had a chance. I wasn’t pretty. Girls across the school hardly knew me. I just did not have what it took to win a school election. I was upset.
As I cried in my room that evening. I suddenly took a deep breath and decided I wouldn’t stop dreaming. I decided that I would enter for elections again in my final year at school—and I would win.
I recognized that my competitors had a lot of things in their favor. What were the points that would work in my favor I had good grades, and I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest strength was the faith I had. I would not allow my plain appearance to hold me back from putting my best foot forward. That evening. I began my election plans a whole year in advance.
I realized that girls would have to get to know me and recognize that I had the ability to represent them. I loved making friends and I liked being helpful, so I decided that perhaps I could use these qualities to work to my advantage. In order to learn how to give a great election speech, I also attended a course on public speaking. When the election came, I had a good speech and I delivered it with more confidence than I had the year before.

Dear Eric,
You wrote that you are interested in Chinese idioms but you have some difficulties in learning Chinese idioms. I’d like to share some suggestions with you on how to learn Chinese idioms.
The best way of learning idioms is through reading. Only by reading more and accumulating more can you master them to the fullest. At the same time, having a Chinese idiom dictionary can also be a good choice, so that you can refer to it when you come across the idioms you don’t understand. What’s more, there is always a story behind the idiom. Therefore, you can search it on the Internet, which will make your idiom learning more interesting and efficient.
Hope my suggestions are helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua
The day after the election, every minute seemed like an hour while I waited for the results. I stood in the school lecture hall with my friends, all of us anxiously waiting for the announcement. “Would my efforts pay off Would I accomplish my goal of being one of the leaders ” When the headmaster finally walked onto the stage, my heart beat fast. “The winner of this year’s Student Union Leader is…” The headmaster paused, building suspense. I held my breath, hoping that my name would be called. And then, to my amazement, I heard it. I had won!
Suddenly, I realized that I had achieved much more than I had dreamed of. Winning the election wasn’t just about the title or the recognition. Actually, I had made many new friends and had helped people along the way. I had also won the acceptance and love of my schoolmates and they knew me as somebody who would stand by them. I was able to put a smile on their faces and brighten up their day. I realized that just by being me and going for my dream, I had already made a difference.
