When Yuan Longping(1930–2021) was a child he dreamed of growing grains of rice as tall as sorghum (高粱 ), and as huge as peanuts, so farmers could relax in the cool shadow of their plants. His dream came true. In China, Yuan is known as the “father of hybrid rice” for creating a type of rice that has a high yield.
He came up with the idea for hybridizing (杂交 ) rice in the 1960s, when China suffered a series of natural disasters that caused many deaths from hunger. After that he devoted himself to the research and development of a better rice breed.
In 1964 he happened to discover a natural hybrid rice plant that had obvious advantages over other plants. Ten years later Yuan grew a new hybrid rice species that is a stronger plant, better able to bear drought(干旱 ) and waterlogging (水涝 ), as well as to resist disease and worms. Even better, it had 20 percent higher yields per hectare than other rice varieties.
He continued to work on and improve rice technology. By 2013, he and his team had developed 126 varieties of super hybrid rice, grown in 46.7 million hectares of rice fields.
Yuan’s hybrid rice was not only a miracle (奇迹) that transformed famine into feast, but “was one of the biggest agricultural success stories that helped power the Chinese economic takeoff”, Zhai Huqu, President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, told Beijing Review.
Thanks to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (倡议), Yuan’s hybrid rice has been helping to solve food problems around the world. The late US economist Don Paarlberg said Yuan’s achievement is a victory against the threat of famine and his work is leading humanity (人类) to a world with ample food.

March 2 is Old Stuff Day(旧物日). It is all about old stuff. Things you used have been forgotten for ages in your home. You must have some old stuff around. And today is all about enjoying it. Because what’s better than finding something really great from days gone by
It’s so easy to forget things you have. If we don’t use them every day, some things can be put away and stay there. And that’s not just the things in your home— technology grows so quickly, new toys come out all the time, new books keep coming out. In the age of new information, we can have so many things easily. Today is all about remembering the things we sometimes leave behind.
We’ve learned to value what age can bring to things. Wines, for example, are more valuable and tastier as they grow older. It’s certain that old things still have their uses, value or charm. People today will pay a pretty penny for stamps, toys, video games, board games, books, coins, and clothes of yesterday.
You can really get into the charm of old things by visiting a junk shop (旧货店). Another person’s old stuff could be your new stuff! Or maybe now is a good day to clean up Old stuff could become a great gift for someone else, or you could always send your old things to a charity shop. If you’re free, you could turn your old clothes into new ones with just a little change.
Today could be a good day to visit your older families. You could ask your grandparents to tell you stories about family history, their childhood and their youth. Learn about what was going on in the world when they were growing up.
Most of all, remember that today’s new stuff will one day be old stuff.

Seiichi Sano, an 89-year-old Japanese man, rides a wave at Katase Nishihama Beach, Thursday, March 30, 2023. He has been recognized as the oldest male to surf(冲浪)by the Guinness World Records.
But maybe he will just keep surfing. “I think it would be interesting to try to surf until I’m 100,” Sano said. “I think I take better care of myself when I have dreams like this. Even now, I take better care of myself than I did before.”
Sano said he got the idea to try surfing from a worker at his local bank. The man’s skin was always dark and he did not look like a usual worker. His secret to keep healthy and energetic, he said, was surfing. So, Sano found a teacher.
Sano gets out most weekends on the black-sand beach. “I don’t consider myself an old man,” he said in his wet suit, board standing next to him. “I have never thought of myself as an old person. I always feel that I can still move forward. I can still do it. I can still enjoy it.”
Several young students who also work with Sano’s surf teacher talked about Sano.
“I think age doesn’t matter in surfing,” a 12-year-old surfer said.
“He is so amazing,” added his younger brother.
“To be honest, I was surprised by his age,” said Sano’s surfing teacher. “I was worried that he would get hurt. I did not know how fit he was.”

Many of us have seen rainbows in the sky once the sun starts shining again after it rains. For us to see a rainbow, the conditions need to be just right. We need some water drops in the air, like rain or even fog, and we need the sun to be behind us and quite low to the ground. This is because a rainbow is created by light passing through water drops.
The light that comes from the sun seems white to us. But the white light we see is made up of a mix of different colors. When the light goes through a raindrop, these colors can separate out. Each of the colors in the rainbow has a different “wavelength” (波长). Raindrops look like little balls. When light hits one of these little balls of water, the light can change direction. We call this “refraction” (折射). Each of the different wavelengths is refracted differently. If the light hits the raindrop at the right place, the refraction separates the wavelengths out into their different colors.
We are taught there are seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. But this isn’t exactly true. Blue and green are next to each other in the rainbow, which is why we can see turquoise (a mix of blue and green). Brown is a mix of red and green. But they aren’t next to each other in the rainbow, so we don’t see them mix to make brown.
We would never see black and white in a rainbow. Black is what we see when there’s no light at all. On the other hand, white is a mix of all the colors together. When light is refracted by raindrops, it separates the white light out, meaning it is no longer white.
13. We can see a rainbow under the right conditions because ________.
A. the raindrops are like little balls B. the light goes through raindrops
C. the sunshine seems to be colorful D. the weather is foggy after it rains
14. According to the passage, what can we know about the colors in the rainbow
A. They can become brown or black. B. There are only seven colors in all.
C. They mix to make the white light. D. Their own places can be changed.
15. Which part of a magazine may this passage be taken from
A. Science. B. Health. C. Culture. D. Fashion.
16. What’s the best title for the passage
A. How are the colors received in the rainbow
B. When can the colors turn blue in the rainbow
C. Which colors aren’t covered with light in the rainbow
D. Why can’t we find white, black and brown in the rainbow

What will the schools of the future look like 5G smart campuses (校园) are being built all over the world. They help students learn more effectively, as well as bring convenience (方便) to teachers.
The University of British Columbia has created Canada’s first 5G smart campus. The school worked with a technology company to build a 5G network across its campus. Their researchers can use the network to test 5G software.
At Staffordshire University in the UK, many students enjoy talking to Beacon and asking it questions. Beacon is an AI robot which can chat with you. It is like a personal assistant for students at school. They can ask it questions, such as whether or not one of their classes is cancelled.
5G smart campus will be a big help for students who take online classes. Many people live in poor areas where there are no schools. But with 5G, this will change. With virtual (虚拟) reality systems, students will be able to see places like the Great Wall without leaving their classrooms.
In Australia, for example, many students live far away from schools. They use cameras to talk to their teachers online, but sometimes it’s a poor experience because of unstable (不稳定) connections. With the speed of 5G network, their teachers will be able to teach without worrying about their connection, according to technology radar.
