[2023浙江卷1月]I was invited to a cookout on an old friend's farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs(蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away. Hovering(悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, "She must have come to say good-bye."

Paragraph 1: A few weeks later, I went to the farm again.
Q1:Why did I come back again
Q2:Did the host keep the promise (and my feelings)
Q3:What did I do with my friends /How did I feel when not seeing the hummingbird
Paragraph 2: I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared.
Q4:What did the hummingbird do at first and at last
Q5:How did I react when seeing the hummingbird again
Q6:Eventually, what did I gain from such an experience
Possible version one:
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. I still remembered my friends' promise so I went past the abandoned milking house to see if they had fixed the broken window(宾语从句). To my satisfaction, no other tiny creatures would meet this trouble any more. As I approached the farm(时间状语从句),I was greeted by a spicy smell of the barbecue, urging me to walk faster(现在分词短语作状语). We were totally immersed in the peaceful atmosphere, enjoying the delicate cuisines, talking about our interesting experiences and singing songs till the sun set(现在分词短语作伴随状语). The evening glow spreading across the farm(独立主格结构), it was time for us to say goodbye so we went to the parking lot together.
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. With a squeaking call, she dived towards me and hovered before my face, looking at me with her bright eyes(现在分词短语作伴随状语). Then she stopped on my left shoulder. I patted her on the back which was covered by colorful feathers(定语从句). And I took out my water bottle, trying to give her some water(现在分词短语作状语). Content and joyful(形容词短语作伴随状语), she flew about 2 meters above the ground, turning her head from side to side as if expressing her gratitude for saving her life to me again(现在分词短语作状语). At that moment, happiness and the feeling of being moved mingled, welling up into my heart, tears rolling down my cheeks(独立主格结构).
Possible version two:
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. Having finished visiting my friend(现在分词短语作状语), I wandered alone the path, kicking pebbles. Memories with the hummingbird occurred to me when I walked to the blackberry-lined path. Was she alright Would she remember me Unknowingly, the milking house appeared in my vision, in which I spotted that the broken window had been repaired(非限制性定语从句). My head went blank. I couldn't help missing her at the prospect of our precious friendship. The sky seemed to turn cloudy then.
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. There she was! Delightedly, the clouds in my heart soon cleared. Hands waving(独立主格结构), I dashed towards the bird, yelling to make myself noticed. She hovered cheerfully and lowered to stand on my shoulder. It was not until the moment she got closer that I saw the raspberries held in her sharp mouth(强调句型). What a kind bird! Even animals know returning. Apparently, a good deed deserves another one. Solid bridges can be built between species.

真题变式:拯救动物[2024山东日照校际联考]]In a coastal village named Seaford, lived a courageous young woman named Amelia. Amelia was known throughout Seaford for her adventurous nature. From the moment she could walk, she would eagerly run towards the crashing waves, feeling the sand between her toes and the cool spray of the ocean mist on her face. She was a woman with a strong will and possessed a heart full of kindness. Amelia's love for the ocean was intense, and she spent most of her days exploring the beautiful beaches and sparkling waters that surrounded her house.
One sunny morning, while Amelia was walking along the shore, she noticed a group of restless seagulls abnormally circling above the crashing waves. Their unusual calls echoed(回响) through the air. Concerned for their well-being, she followed their flight pattern, her instincts guiding her towards danger.
As she approached a towering cliff, Amelia gasped in horror. On a narrow ledge(岩架), high above the violent waves, was a young dolphin trapped in a thick fishing net. Its shiny body shone under the golden rays of the sun, but its freedom was cruelly limited by the trap. With each struggle, the net tightened around its delicate body, leaving painful marks on its skin. Its tail flapped helplessly and each movement was a request for help. Its desperate cries for assistance echoed through the air.
A sense of urgency filled her, pushing her forward with determination and resolve. Realizing that time was tight, Amelia knew she had to act instantly to free this innocent creature from its difficult position before it submitted to exhaustion or the force of the tides.

Without hesitation, Amelia rushed back to the village"可知,续写第一段应描写Amelia召集村民一起营救海豚,并为其治疗伤势的情景;根据续写第二段提示句可知,续写第二段应描写海豚被放回水里时,返回来向Amelia表达感谢,人们欢呼鼓掌,见证了一次不凡的救援。

Without hesitation, Amelia rushed back to the village. She gathered the villagers to join her in the rescue. Amelia led the way, carefully moving along the steep cliff edge until she reached the dolphin(时间状语从句). As she drew closer(时间状语从句), she noticed tears streaming out of the creature's eyes, as if it knew its fate was in their hands. Amelia carefully freed the dolphin from the net. Then Amelia and the villagers guided it down to the waiting boat. Then they made their way back to the shore and treated the injuries of the dolphin.
As the dolphin was released into the waters, it hesitated for a moment. Amelia approached the dolphin and gently stroked it. The dolphin touched the girl with the tip of its nose in response and made happy sounds as if to say a final thank you before diving gracefully beneath the surface. The crowd erupted in applause, their hearts filled with joy and gratitude for being witness to such a remarkable rescue. Amelia's courage and compassion were an inspiration to all who heard her story(定语从句).

[2024广东四校联考(二)]As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm in Missouri last May, Brandon finished feeding his cows and decided to go home. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 7, and Everett, 5, followed closely.
As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate. Louie paused at a board covering an old well. The board had, over time, become easily broken. When Louie stepped on it, it caved in and he fell into the well. Brandon had just close the door when he heard a cry for help. He turned around and found his younger son Everett standing alone beside the well, pointing to it and screaming.
Brandon quickly realized what had happened. "No, Louie can barely swim," he panicked, his mind almost going blank. However, he knew he should calm down. He ran to the well and heard Louie hitting the water. Without thinking, he jumped in. Somehow, Brandon managed to grab a pipe that ran down the side of the well. He hit the cold water at the bottom of the well and lifted Louie up as he stuck his own legs and back against the narrow walls for support. "All right, Dad, we can climb out now," Louie said.
If only it were that easy!
The pipe that he'd grabbed during his fall was too slippery to be of any use. There was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett looking down at them, Brandon shouted, "Everett, you're going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops. Tell them we need help. And Everett, stay off the road."

Everett did as he was told. About 15 minutes later, Dan and Christi, nearby farmers, were driving by when they noticed Everett alone by the side of the road, waving(when引导时间状语从句;现在分词作伴随状语). They pulled over and asked if he was OK. "My daddy's in a well," he told them. Hearing this, they piled Everett into their pickup and then drove to the well.
The couple hurried to the well with Everett. "Brandon!" Dan shouted. "It's Dan. We're going to send a rope down to you." After several minutes, they pulled Louie out of the well. The couple now turned their attention to Brandon, but he was too heavy to pull out of the well using just the rope("too...to..." After a brief discussion, they decided to use the old windmill that still stood over the well(that引导定语从句). Forty-some minutes after he'd jumped into the well to save his son, Brandon emerged, cold and wet. "You are our lifesaver," Brandon thanked Dan, who turned to Everett. Dan said, "Everett is actually your lifesaver. Without him, I wouldn't have known the accident, let alone the rescue!" Words couldn't express his surprise when the father turned to the 5-year-old boy. Finally they thanked Dan and Christi again together.

Wanda graduated from a cooking school and got a job in a new cafe. She has been working in the cafe for 6 weeks. She likes her job. The cafe belongs to Gregor who makes coffee and looks after the customers. Wanda does all the cooking. Wanda thinks Gregor is very nice, but he is also a tough boss. He wants everything to be perfect.
Today Wanda is having a bad day. Last night, she was in a terribly low mood and drank a lot of wine with her friends. Now her head hurts and she feels extremely bad. However, Gregor is very excited. "Wanda, we must try very hard today. Look at the man sitting by the window. He is Anton Wesley-Brown. He writes about food and restaurants for the newspaper! If he likes the food here, he will write a good report about our cafe!"
Wanda understands. Gregor wants the cafe to be a success. But why today Why does this restaurant critic come today Today's special is very simple — a grilled pork chop(烤猪排), with cream, mustard sauce(芥末酱) and salad. "I could have cooked something wonderful if I had known that man was coming. But today I am too ill to cook better," Wanda thinks. "Mr Wesley-Brown wants the pork chop!" Gregor comes to her and says. "OK," Wanda replies. When the meal is ready, Gregor hurries over and takes the meal to Mr Wesley-Brown.
When Wanda is preparing for the next dish, she catches sight of a small bottle on the counter. "Why is there brown sugar here I used salt, pepper and mustard. I didn't use brown sugar. There is the pepper and the mustard. Where is the salt Oh, no! I put brown sugar on the pork chop! Mr Wesley-Brown will hate it! Gregor will be very angry! I will lose my job!" Wanda becomes upset.

She is responsible for all the cooking," says Gregor. "I know you are very busy," says Mr Wesley-Brown, "but I just have one question. Did you put brown sugar on my pork chop "
"Er, yes, I did put brown sugar on it. Sorry," Wanda answers in a small voice. She feels embarrassed and lowers her head. "Gregor will fire me.What should I do " Wanda thinks. Just then Mr Wesley-Brown's words are heard again, which interrupt Wanda's thoughts(非限制性定语从句). "It's a brilliant idea. The pork chop is very tasty with brown sugar. Keep up the good cooking." Mr Wesley-Brown praises Wanda and goes out with a big smile, leaving Wanda in a state of shock(现在分词短语作结果状语). Afterwards, this dish becomes increasingly popular and Wanda's honest mistake contributes to her great masterpiece.

[2024江苏四市五区期初调研]It was a chilly Friday night, and I had just returned from climbing one of the red rocks of Sedona. My father telephoned me as I walked through the arches to my dorm room and told me that my mother had been in a terrible car crash and had been taken to the intensive care unit(重症监护室)of a nearby hospital.
When I got to the hospital, my father led me down a wide hallway with machines all around. A strong smell of medicine brought a sick feeling to my already turning stomach. As I turned into my mother's ward, the cadaverous(形容枯槁的) condition of her body shocked me. Her face had swollen, her eyes had huge dark bruises, and she had tubes down her throat and in her arms. Gently holding her cold swollen hands, I said "hi" in a calm voice, controlling my urge to cry out.
She kept looking at me as she pounded her hand against the bed, looking painful. I turned my face away from her, trying to hide the tears that were rolling down my face. That was when it struck me that I really might lose my mother.
From that night on, my life completely changed. Up to that point, I'd had the luxury of just being a kid, having to deal with only the exaggerated melodramas(戏剧性的事件) of teenage life. As my mother struggled first to stay alive and then to relearn to walk, my sense of priorities changed sharply. My mother needed me. The trials and trouble of my daily life at school, which had seemed so important before, now appeared insignificant. My mother and I had faced death together, and life took on a new meaning for both of us.
After a week of treatment in intensive care, my mother's condition improved enough to be moved to a regular hospital ward. She was finally out of danger but, because her legs had been crushed, there was doubt whether she would be able to walk again. I was just grateful that she was alive. Two months later, a sort of hospital suite was set up in our family room, and she was allowed to come home.

My mother's return to home was a happiness for us all, but it meant some unaccustomed responsibilities for me. Some days ago, it was my mom that prepared three meals for me, tucked me in and helped with my schoolwork(强调句型). But now it seemed our role as mother and daughter was reversed. It was I that brought meals to her bedside, fed her and cleaned up afterwards(强调句型). Also, I bathed her, supported her to and from the toilet and washed her dirtied clothes. Just within a few months, I was transformed from my mother's well-fed and even spoiled sweetheart to her consistent and reliable guardian.
My mother's reliance on me changed our relationship. Previously, she was a strong backer who was always there for me when I needed comfort, rest and care(who引导定语从句;when引导时间状语从句). Sometimes, when I was stressed out in my academic life, I would express my anger at her, which always stirred up fierce quarrels between us(which引导非限制性定语从句). Now, however, I became my mother's strongest supporter. The occurrence of our quarrels was reduced enormously and our relationship improved steadily. True, this car crash robbed my mother of her health, but it also shaped me into a more mature and independent individual, on whom my mother could always rely(on whom引导非限制性定语从句).

新素养:体育[2024广东四校联考(一)]]Edward walked slowly past the school blacktop where his older brother, Leon, was playing basketball with his friends. Leon didn't notice Edward until he turned to shoot the ball. Leon really loved basketball and was good at it. But Edward was another story.
Edward would beg to play with them but Leon's friends complained a lot. For some reason, last game, Edward's playing was worse than ever. He couldn't do anything right. He was completely unable to keep possession of the ball. He missed even the easy rebounds. His dribbling was useless, and none of his throws were anywhere near the basket. Leon had to turn his brother away.
Edward was always a whiz at math. He was so advanced that he already knew how to solve long division problems before he was taught in school. Math word problems, even the complicated ones with several steps, were no problem.
One day, Leon's math teacher, pulled him aside. "You need to do better, a lot better, or you're not going to pass this class. There's a big test coming up."
Leon's heart sank. When he got home, he talked with Edward about it. The boys agreed that over the next two weeks they intended to spend an hour each day after school working on math problems and then an hour playing basketball.
"Here is a good one," Edward said and pointed to a math word problem. "Why don't you read it "
Leon looked at the book for several seconds. "I'm dizzy already!" he exclaimed.
"Do you know what the first step is " asked Edward. "The first step is to stay cool and focused." Edward talked Leon through the problem. "Think about what you need to find out. Don't let the problem trick you." Step by step, together they figured it out and got the right answer. Leon soon discovered that Edward was really good at helping him.

Soon it was time for basketball practice. Edward held the ball with sweaty hands, standing on the court nervously. "Stay cool and stay focused. Those rules work in basketball, too," Leon said. "Let's start from the basics." With Leon's patient instructions, Edward started to practice dribbling. At first Edward would get frustrated because he couldn't remember all the steps. But after consistent practice, his performance changed for the better. The next two weeks saw the two brothers inspire each other and make progress steadily("see+宾语+现在分词作宾补"结构). Edward learned how to shoot, pass and rebound; Leon was able to solve more and more complicated math word problems.
The morning of the math test came all too soon for Leon. "Stay cool and focused!" With Edward's encouraging words echoing in his mind(with复合结构), Leon calmed down and buried himself in the questions. Eventually, he finished the paper with flying colors. When the bell rang, Leon handed in the paper, rushed out of the classroom and went to Edward. He invited Edward to play basketball with him after school. At the court, Leon's friends were amazed by how much Edward had improved(how引导宾语从句). They had so much fun! "That was pretty good basketball for a math whiz," said Leon as he and Edward headed home(as引导时间状语从句). "Just like your math grade! It was a pretty good grade for a basketball star," said Edward.

[2022浙江卷1月]When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped that he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn't assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate(命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn't mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn't say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis(假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades — the exact opposite of me. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn't sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

Paragraph 1:
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. The more we met, the more I knew his ability(the+比较级,the+比较级结构). I was aware that my teammate was much more advanced than I. He knew technical things and approached every detail with great singularity of purpose. I, on the other hand, had little to share. We discussed a lot and tried to fashion an intelligent yet simple experiment. Part of our job was to select students who had volunteered to be subjects for our project. I decided to devote myself to the task of working with the subjects, while he developed the scientific model(while连接两个并列分句).
Paragraph 2:
One day I got word that he was admitted to the hospital for a serious disease. Apparently, the stress of getting the best grade had taken its toll on him. When visiting him(when引导的时间状语从句的省略), I noticed for the first time a sense of vulnerability on his face. I assured him I would finish the project alone and that I wouldn't let him down. I poured more time and energy into that project. Finally, my hard work paid off — we were awarded an A, which gave me great satisfaction. More importantly, I earned my teammate's recognition and we have become good friends since then(升华文章主旨).

I recently had a challenging time working on a group project. My teacher put me with three people who weren't all that excited about getting any work done.
Our assignment was to pick one of the 50 states and make a brochure about it. "Let's pick Hawaii!" said Emma. "Hawaii has super-cute swimsuits" "True!" Agreed Angela. "Speaking of swimsuits, there are some get-ready-for-summer sales happening now." "Really Maybe my mother will take me shopping this weekend," said Emma.
I turned to Bernard, "Which state do you think we should pick " He shrugged(耸肩), "I don't care. But what happened to your hair, Jessica It looks like it got caught in a blender(搅拌机)!"
No one in my group seemed very eager to talk about our project, so I went ahead and shared interesting facts I knew about Hawaiian food and culture. When I was done, no one responded, so I pulled out my notebook. I asked Emma to search for pictures of Hawaiian sea life. But she said she was busy and asked if her picture at a Hawaii hotel pool would do. I requested Angela and Bernard to find Hawaiian historical information
and geography respectively. It turned out they all had their own business. I was getting the impression that none but me planned to work on the brochure.
Later that day, as I set the table for dinner, my mom could tell I was stressed out. "What's going on " she asked. I told her what happened and sighed, "So I guess the only way to get the brochure done is for me to do it myself."
"Well," my mom said with a smile, "when it comes to homework, they don't necessarily do things you order. Second, I doubt if you're responsible for everyone else's part. Why don't you check with your teacher about it "
When I talked to my teacher the next day, he explained he would grade the assignment partly on the finished brochure but mostly on our individual work, which made me much less worried.

At our next group meeting, I tried to bring up my concerns in a friendly way. I carefully explained grading rules of the project and suggested that they take it seriously. "Since we're a team, we rely on each other to do the best we can," I told them, assuring everybody that we could seek solutions together if troubles arose(Since引导原因状语从句;现在分词短语作伴随状语,其中包含that引导的宾语从句和if引导的条件状语从句). My sincerity persuaded my teammates. Emma, Angela, and Bernard all ended up doing their share. The following days witnessed our lively discussion and cooperation. Shining moments occurred when the girls added fashion information and Bernard put humour to our work. As we handed in our assignment, I felt my stress relieved.
Finally, we were amazed to receive the grade for our group project. Right as the teacher said, our group work was graded mainly based on efforts of each member(as引导非限制性定语从句;过去分词短语作方式状语). It was not excellent but good enough to reward what we had prepared and contributed. Smile spread across my teammates' faces. They genuinely thanked me as it was my tolerant attitude that helped them get work done(as引导原因状语从句,其中包含一个强调句). Next time when you are stuck for teamwork troubles, don't shoulder everything but try a friendly communication.

[2024天星原创]Sean was a single father of three kids who had just lost their mother to cancer. Shortly afterwards, he had to sell his house to pay the medical bills. Worse still, he had to quit his job as a regional manager due to too many absences he acquired in taking care of his wife while she was sick. Their lives sank into extreme poverty. He had to do part-time work to pay off his debts. He never imagined what his life would become. Everything felt hopeless. Anyway, he continued with his life, earning barely enough money to feed his kids.
Today was a bit different. He went to the nearest gas station after work. He had an extra ?$2 with which he could buy himself a cheap hot dog. It was a little treat he would give himself. As he walked toward the gas station, he saw a man panicking, saying something to a woman in the car. Not knowing why they were so worried, he continued walking until the man called out to him.
"Sir, I'm so sorry to ask, but my wife is in labor(临产), and we're out of gas. I left my wallet and phone at home as we were rushing out of the house. Is there any way you can help me " the man said. His desperate eyes pulled at Sean's heartstrings.
"Well, sir. I only have 2 dollars, but you can have it!" Sean said, reaching into his pocket and producing the 2 dollars. "Thank you! That works. I have a few coins in the car, but I can get a gallon and reach the hospital with that." The man took the bills gratefully.
"I'm Matthew. Please give me your contact information so I can pay you back." "No need. I only hope you and your wife get to the hospital safely," Sean smiled. But Matthew insisted. Finally, Sean gave him his number.

[2024湖北黄冈调研]The emergency doctor stood at the foot of my husband's hospital bed, holding the test results and a diagnosis — acute myeloid leukemia(急性髓系白血病). He said to my husband, "We'll move you to the leukemia floor. You'll be here at least a month."
A month! My mind started spinning. My mom had fought breast cancer. My aunt had lung cancer. Both had died. But neither had been in hospital for a month! Exactly how bad was my husband's diagnosis And how were we going to struggle for a month It was March. The end of a school year was approaching. My days with my high school students were limited. How could I prepare four weeks of lesson plans and hand them over to a substitute teacher A month! Could we afford to be in the hospital that long Our insurance was good, but we'd still have to pay our part of the medical expenses. My meals wouldn't be covered, and parking was so expensive! My head couldn't do the math. I drove home, filled with countless worries. Even though the parking pass would be a significant discount, I couldn't help but feel bothered about the cost throughout the drive.
The next morning, I packed the car with everything needed for our hospital stay and headed to school to see my students. Because we lived in a small community, they would have heard about my husband's diagnosis. I would assure them that my husband would be fine, and that I would be fine, too. I'd encourage them to be their best selves for the substitute and for me — while I was on family leave.
When I entered my classroom, the chatter stopped. I put on a smile and continued to my podium(讲台). Sitting on top was a green envelope with "Mrs. Sargent" written on it. I looked over the frames of my glasses at twenty-eight faces, some smiling, some trying to resist. "What is this " I asked. I picked up the envelope, and continued, "You guys..."

When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out — fives, tens, twenties. At that moment, my throat tightened with emotion and I understood the meaning behind their excited faces. An overwhelming sense of pride from them washed over me. Should I take it My brain was spinning fast. Seeing the money that the students raised(现在分词短语作状语;that引导定语从句), I couldn't help but wonder another question: How had these kids collected so much money I could even imagine the countless hours they had spent doing odd jobs, determined to save every penny to help me(省略关系词that/which的定语从句;形容词短语作状语). Therefore, deep within my heart, there was a firm voice, "I can't take it."
As an adult in the room, I felt guilty and unwilling to accept these teenagers' hard-earned money, but I decided to accept it. I tightly held up the cash and my voice trembled as I told them how I was bothered with the cost of parking(as引导时间状语从句,其中包含how引导的宾语从句). "Kids, you just covered my parking cost for the month." But that's not the real reason why I accepted it(why引导定语从句). With tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes(with复合结构), I hugged each student tightly. More important than the envelope was the kindness in their hearts and the lesson they had taught themselves: How wonderful it feels to meet someone's needs and to make a difference. Through their small act of kindness, these teenagers showed me their growth and they were not ignorant children, but young individuals with wisdom and kindness in their hearts.

[2023新课标Ⅰ卷]When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply:"Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this." Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, "Great. Now, write it again." I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I still remember it was a Monday morning in spring, when my teacher called me to his office, telling me that I had taken first place in the writing contest, and that I was the only winner whose native language wasn't English(定语从句). Dominated by an overwhelming sense of excitement and pride at his words, I simply stood there dumbfounded, and my feet, as if rooted to the ground, couldn't move a bit. The next day, I was presented with my award and a certificate at the ceremony.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. Giggling instantly with a broad smile spreading on his face(with复合结构), he told me that he was proud of my wonderful performance. It was at that moment that a warm surge of streams washed through my body(强调句), and the image of the horse emerged in my mind, encouraging me to continue writing. Indeed, I got a taste of victory and learned to pursue my dream with perseverance, whatever difficulties might arise(让步状语从句).

真题变式:学习的转变[2024天星原创]When I was a 15-year-old high school student, I was talkative and outgoing, and more interested in being sociable than in working hard. I never paid much attention in class, doing the bare minimum and often bet that nobody else would do their homework, so I needn't either. I ignored most of what I was taught but loved reading science fiction and books about people surviving on desert islands.
I did not enjoy geometry, although I liked the philosophical approach of our teacher, Mrs Trenholm. She told us that geometry was about humankind's ability to work things out, that there were truths, and that clear thinking and logic could solve problems.
A month or so into the year we started on Euclidean geometry. We were all struggling and I was probably the most vocal(敢于直言的) in class about it. Mrs Trenholm set us homework, asking us to try to solve a problem — to prove two angles in a complex geometric shape are equal — by the next morning. Perhaps because I had been the most outspoken student, she pulled me aside as we were leaving class and said, "Don't talk your way out of this." I didn't know what she meant, but I went home, worked on it for 20 minutes and
gave up. I went to bed at about 10 pm and woke up a couple of hours later, which was unusual. Then I decided to try again.
My handwriting was messy, and I noticed that if I made the diagram neater and bigger, I could see where I went wrong. I remember I was surprised that I was making headway because I initially thought I had no idea how to do it.At about 5 am, pencil eraser pieces all over the desk and paper everywhere, I got it. All of a sudden, I remembered things Mrs Trenholm had said in class about clear thinking. It was exciting. I thought, "I don't have to be somebody who walks around avoiding things; I can work things out."

I handed it in the next day. Mrs Trenholm would never embarrass students in front of everyone — she always goes round, talking to individuals(现在分词短语作状语). Finally, she came to me, with the paper in hand(with复合结构). I could see it had a little check mark. She looked right at me and asked, "Did you do this " When I said yes, she nodded and went back to the platform and said, "One of you now understands Euclidean geometry and has done a fantastic job. Let's keep going so everybody gets it."
The homework changed the rest of my life. I had been a below-average student with a lot to catch up on(with复合结构), but I found that if I concentrated, I could understand and even enjoy a subject. And I became someone who no longer allowed myself the freedom to talk myself out of dealing with problems(定语从句). I went on to study maths and physics at college and became a nuclear research scientist. All this is inspired by the geometry problem and Mrs Trenholm.

[2022新高考Ⅰ卷]It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened."I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him," he explained uncomfortably."I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well — he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer — that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. I quietly said, "David, if you don't want to run today(if引导条件状语从句), no one is going to make you do. But if you're not running because you're afraid someone is going to laugh, that's not a good enough reason. There will always be someone who will laugh and say mean words(who引导定语从句). There are people like that, and that's just the way it is. The real question is whether you are going to let those few people stop you from doing something you really want to do(whether引导表语从句,里面包含省略了that的定语从句). Are you going to let them get in your way If you really want to run, David, then you run!"I held my breath as David took this in. Then he looked at the field and said with fierce but quiet determination, "I'm gonna run."
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The starter's gun sounded, and David lurched forward with the other children. But he had only gone a few metres before he tripped and fell flat on the ground. My heart sank. As I started to shout encouragement, other voices around me appeared too.David picked himself up and started again. This was David's run. He had worked for it, and he wouldn't give up! At last, he raised his arms with delight as he crossed the finish line to wild cheers and applause. At the end of the year, the track coach asked the class to propose one of their classmates for the athletic award for their grade. Without hesitation the whole class voted for David, saying that no one had worked harder for that award than he(现在分词短语作伴随状语,第一个that引导宾语从句).

Now, select one of the composers listed on the chalkboard. And after class, find a tape containing the composition created by the composer. During the test, use the tape player to play the composition. When the music starts, imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra that performs the composer's music." And then she smiled, "You'll receive the test in front of your classmates."
"What A test in front of the classmates It will kill me," I said to myself. Although normally I performed well in music, and often had high marks, I am quite a shy girl. After a short while, I took a deep breath and scanned the list of names on the chalkboard. One name caught my attention.
"Who's that person " I wondered. I didn't know, but that was going to be my choice.
Seated in the classroom, I fixed my eyes on that name anxiously, hoping no one would announce that name. Finally, it was my turn. I said without a second thought,"Johannes Brahms." Once I said the name, panic washed over me. I sighed, "How am I going to do this I know nothing about the person and his composition. But I have to perform in front of my classmates and teacher."
Later in the day, I went to a store and bought a tape that contained Johannes Brahms's compositions and its relevant music notation(记谱法). Back home, played the tape, and tried to get familiar with the composition. When listening to the composition and looking at the music score, I held a stick and moved my arms to and fro(来回地), pretending to be guiding an orchestra. During the following days, I kept practicing but didn't perform quite well. The composition was indeed hard to me.
When the big day came, I felt nervous as I slipped into my seat and waited for my turn to perform. Eventually, Mrs. Palin called my name,"Jill, it's your turn."

Then, I forced myself to walk to the front of the classroom. Standing in front of all the classmates made me very nervous(动名词短语作主语), and my legs kept shaking. To make the matter worse, my brain went blank at that very moment, forgetting my previous practice. However, I tried to remind myself to be calm. After a few deep breaths, I felt much better and began to perform. Thinking my conduct must be terrible, I was even unwilling to think about the result.
The next day, Mrs. Palin handed each student a piece of paper with a score. With my report card in hand, my heart pounded because I was afraid that I would be the one who got the lowest score(because引导原因状语从句;that引导宾语从句;who引导定语从句). I closed my eyes and slowly opened my report card. To my surprise, I got a high score. When the teacher announced that I was the best in my class, I almost jumped with joy. I understood that only by working hard can we get good results(only修饰介词短语位于句首引起倒装).
