The printing is also called the movable type printing (活字印刷). But how did it work in the past
First of all, the clay was made into movable types. Then words were engraved (雕刻) carefully onto the types. After that, the words were chosen and put in right order in a box according to the text. Next, the workers brushed ink onto the movable types. Finally the types could be used for printing. They could be used again and again for different books.
The movable type printing plays an important role in Chinese culture. With the help of it, Chinese culture spread around the world more quickly. At the same time, the movable type printing was widely used in the world at that time. As a result, more and more culture communication among countries took place. As we all know, too much trash is a big problem for our environment. A woman in Indonesia’s Java island has come up with a great idea—lending books to children in exchange for trash. Raden Roro Hendarti, nearly 50 years old, is a librarian in Muntang village. She started a “trash library”, hoping to make children read more as well as make them realize the importance of environmental protection. Each weekday, Raden puts all kinds of books on the back of her three-wheeler (三轮车) and rides to Muntang village. There, children line up to exchange plastic cups, bags and other trash for books from Raden’s mobile library. After finishing the exchange, Raden carries back all the trash.

There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel (轮子). This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long ways.
For hundreds of years after that, there were few inventions that had as much influences the wheel. Then in the early 1800s, the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn’t have to explore (探索) much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today. The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions: the helicopter (直升飞机) in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, and jet planes (喷气式飞机) in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.
By this time most people had a very good life. Man has a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.
In 1969 man took his biggest step from the earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning thought. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

How do we know the time A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries, people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries it was developed. For example, spring (发条) were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run business, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work.

With big eyes and a kind character, Robin is designed to help kids in hospital. “The goal is to create a technology that’s not just a device but a partner and friend,” said Karén Khachikyan. His company invented Robin.
Andrea Mocellin used to be a sports-car designer. He knows how to make things move fast. Now Mocellin is using his skills to build a better and more travel-friendly wheelchair, the Revolve Air. The wheelchair has many advantages. Mocellin wants to get it out soon. He has nearly 12,000 customers on his waiting list.
Purrble is a toy that can make anxious kids feel better. This toy has seven sensors (传感器). They respond (回应) to touches. Purrble’s heartbeat speeds up when you play with it. Then you can comfort Purrble by petting (抚摸) it. This slows its heartbeat down. It calms you too. In a study of 20 families, 19 parents said that Purrble helped their kids calm down. “I grew up with a bad illness as a child and would have loved to have this,” said Aaron Horowitz. New Glasses Can Transcribe (转录) Speech in Real Time
When Paul Shuttleworth bought himself a very expensive pair of eyeglasses for Christmas last year, it was a strange gift. The glasses didn’t improve his eyesight, weren’t particularly stylish and uncomfortably pressed down on his nose.
But the glasses are an important tool for him which have helped him talk and join in conversations in ways that he had never been able to before. These fantastic glasses automatically (自动地) transcribe the words someone is saying and show the text on his glasses.
Real-time captioning (为……配字幕) is not a totally new technology. People who are deaf or hard of hearing usually use apps such as Otter to transcribe a conversation as they’re having it. But having to ping-pong between the person they’re talking with and their phone can be uncomfortable and tiring. However, having captions in front of your eyes can change the situation.
Improvements in speech recognition software (语音识别软件) have really enabled these technological developments, says Dan Scarfe, CEO of XRAI Glass, a company that makes a speech-processing app that can be used with live-captioning glasses. “I believe in about six months we’ll have a new killer piece of hardware that you can surely use for this. Then it’s just a question of finding people who want to use it,” Dan says.
While live-captioning glasses could be an unbelievably powerful tool for millions of people, they are not a complete solution. For many people with hearing loss, understanding a friend in a crowded restaurant is a bad dream. Similarly, live-captioning software struggles to transcribe correct conversation in these spaces. Background noise remains a big problem that these glasses do not yet fully solve.
Many people who are deaf or hard of hearing are excited by this technology, but some see it as a danger to requests for sign language interpreters (手语翻译). Captions do not show a speaker’s identity, feelings or voice changes; interpreters can give all background information.

Do you know how the microwave oven was invented In the 1940s, Percy Spencer worked at a company called Raytheon. They were making machines for World War II. One day, when testing a new machine part called a magnetron (磁控管), Percy noticed something strange. A chocolate bar in his pocket had melted (融化)! Percy wanted to know why it had melted.
Percy decided to do some research. He put a glass of water near the magnetron, and it boiled really fast! Then, he tried heating an egg, which exploded (爆炸). Percy realized that the microwaves from the magnetron could cook food quickly.
Percy and his team started working on a new kind of oven that used microwaves to cook food. In 1945, they made the first microwave oven, called the “Radarange.” This first microwave was bulky, about five feet tall and weighing over 700 pounds. It was mainly used in restaurants and on ships because it was too expensive for home use.
Over the next few years, engineers worked to make microwave ovens smaller, cheaper, and safer to use at home. By the 1970s, many families had microwave ovens in their kitchens. They loved how fast and easy it was to cook food with them. Microwave ovens could make food in minutes, which was much quicker than traditional ovens.

Miniaturization (微型化) has been a goal of engineers and designers for a few years. The ever smaller products have included pocket-sized computers and motorbikes which are the size of a backpack. The latest thing is a handbag which can pass through the eye of a needle (针). It has been sold for $63,750 online, according to a post (帖子) made by the company MSCHF on June 14th,2023.
“Smaller than a grain of sea salt, this handbag is so small that you’ll need a microscope (显微镜) to see it,” ISCHF wrote in the post. There are big handbags, normal handbags, and small handbags, but this is the final word in bag miniaturization. An object like a handbag is useful, but it becomes smaller and smaller. It is losing its original use until it turns into just a brand.
The tiny handbag is 657 by 222 by 700 micrometers and was shown to the public in Paris in June. It was made with high technology which uses 3D printers. MSCHF chose the technology to see how small a handbag they could make.
MSCHF’s creative officer Kevin Wiesner was interviewed by The New York Times. “I think the bag is a funny object because it derives from something very functional,” Wiesner said. “But in fact, it has become jewelry (珠宝)”.
Why does the first paragraph mention the eye of a needle
A.To explain the handbag’s value.
B.To discuss the handbag’s problem.
C.To prove how small this handbag is.
D.To show how good the handbag looks.
2. What does the underlined word “It” refer to
A.The tiny handbag. B.The microscope.
C.The post. D.The technology.
3. According to the passage, MSCHF________.
A.is a company that only makes bags
B.has made plenty of smaller objects
C.thinks miniaturization will be less popular
D.used high technology in making the handbag
4. What can be the best title for the passage
A.Some Useless Objects
B.MSCHF’s Creative Officers
C.A Handbag Smaller than a Grain of Salt
D.The Final Word in Computer Miniaturization

Spanish director Pablo Berger’s Robot Dreams (《机器人之梦》) is a sweet but sad cartoon movie about a lonely dog who buys a robot friend. Now in cinemas, it’s different from many films because there is no talking, but this doesn’t make it any less fun or moving.
The cartoon movie is from Sara Varon’s 2007 graphic novel (连环画小说) of the same name, a dog is living in 1980s New York, alone. Watching TV and living on microwave meals (微波炉餐食), the dog thinks he (or she, we’re not sure) needs a friend and decides to buy a robot. The two enjoy New York together but then something happens and the two get separated. While they try and dream about getting back together, it’s impossible. Both of them have to move on with their own new lives.
The film tells us that in life, things don’t always last for all the time. We change and so do the people we care about. We lose things and we lose parts of ourselves. As a result, you should learn to say goodbye. You may feel a bit sad watching it, but it’s also very beautiful, fun and full of heart.

Hasna Kourda grew up on an island in Tunisia where her grandmother taught her the strong values of looking after old things. “Clothes can be reused continuously,” Kourda says. A large bag made from old clothes by her grandmother is still used by her parents today. Kourda has brought these values into a project that she hopes to change the relationship people have with their clothes—and benefit the environment in the process.
The clothing industry is considered to be responsible for 8%~10% of global carbon emissions (碳排放), according to the UN. As the world races to meet its promises to limit carbon emissions to net zero by the middle of the century, the clothing industry has a huge job to play its part.
Kourda is among those who hope to help do that. Her way is to encourage people to look for new ways of using the clothing they already have rather than buying something new. Her company, Save Your Wardrobe (衣柜) , uses technology to help people go shopping in their own wardrobes. The company uses computer software to build a digital image (形象) of a user’s wardrobe—people can either take pictures of clothes or allow Save Your Wardrobe to check their online shopping history. It then advises how to create new clothes as well as connecting users to repair services and environmentally friendly dry cleaning services.
In October, the company began to work with the German company Zalando, which will use Save Your Wardrobe technology to offer customers aftercare for their clothes. “Our goal” says Kourda, “is to use technology to guide users to reconnect with the clothes of their wardrobe and make the most out of it, finally encouraging them to buy less and better.”
Save Your Wardrobe is just one of a huge number of companies using new technology to make a difference in the clothing industry. From encouraging new ways of buying clothes, to making it possible for clothes to be recycled at the end of their life, the clothing world could look very different by the time we reach 2045.
What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A.Kourda was raised by her grandmother. B.Kourda’s family has valued old things in life.
C.Kourda’s grandma reused clothes to make money. D.Kourda’s parents are too poor to buy new clothes.

A.How Kourda guides users to do online shopping.
B.Why Kourda’s company works with other companies.
C.How Kourda’s company helps to limit carbon emissions.
D.Why Kourda builds a digital image of the users’ wardrobes.
3. What is the goal of Save Your Wardrobe
A.To help users buy cheaper wardrobes. B.To check users’ online shopping history.
C.To encourage users to buy less and better clothes. D.To connect users to repair and dry cleaning services.
4. Which statement would the author most probably agree with
A.People will stick to old traditions of buying clothes.
B.Customers might need less service for their clothes soon.
C.Save Your Wardrobe will create more clothes in the future.
D.The clothing industry might be more environmentally friendly.
