The best science books inspire a sense of wonder and make you amazed at the incredible
world we live in. Here are four of them to feed your imagination.
A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson
How did it all begin And how did we get here Combining history and science, the book
offers a comprehensive yet entertaining answer to these questions. Bill Bryson takes the reader
on an impressive journey through the greatest scientific discoveries in history. It explains
scientific topics in a vivid way, but it’s quite a long read.
Thing Explainer by Randall Munroe

However, additionally providing more technical terms might have enhanced the understanding
and learning experience.
Ask an Astronaut by Tim Peake
What does it feel like to fly into space How do you prepare for it Astronaut Tim Peake
answers all the questions you never knew about going into space. The book gives insights into
the cutting-edge science, as well as the day-to-day life on board of the International Space
Station. Its question and answer format makes it easy to quickly find answers, but it can become
less appealing due to the lack of descriptive language.
Deep Time by Riley Black
Want to know the story of our planet Riley Black takes us on a journey, in the order of
time, through the geological (地质的) events that have shaped our planet. The fascinating high-
quality images are supported by easily digestible explanations of key historical moments. It also
expands on key concepts in geology, astronomy and biology. Yet, measuring the size of some
objects on the photos is difficult due to the lack of a scale bar (比例尺).
21. What’s a shortcoming of Thing Explainer
A. It is written in plain language. B. It is rather too long.
C. It fails to include clear images. D. It lacks technical terms.
22. Which book is organized in the format of question and answer

B. They entertain readers of all ages.
C. They introduce astronauts’ daily life.
D. They combine science and history.

The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways
than one. I’d say that he was about 40 years older than his classmates in my undergraduate
communications class. He hungrily jumped into class discussions, with his humor and wisdom
of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ perspectives, as if each of
them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile—and he left with one too.
“These students gave me the confidence that I didn’t need to feel bad about my age,”
Valencia says.
One day I spotted Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that
semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money and have

his student-loan papers in order. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my
communications class.
Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit.
No problem, he said.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, jumping into our discussions on how to find
and tell stories in Los Angeles—a 63-year-old man with as much energy and curiosity as any of
the youngsters in class.
A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition
but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and
benefit of learning,”says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. Afterward, I overheard Valencia
wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish
community college, so he had a long way to go.
There is something splendidly unreasonable about Valencia’s determination to get a four-
year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that
paper on the wall. But that doesn’t seem especially relevant. He’s found all the youthful energy
and academic opportunity stimulating (振奋人心的). Valencia’s grade in my class this semester
will not show up on his transcripts (成绩单 ). But I’m giving him an A—and in the most
important ways, it counts.
24. What made Valencia different from his classmates
A. He was respectful to the teacher.
B. He activated the class atmosphere.
C. He was anxious to learn despite his age.
D. He often put forward different opinions.
25. According to the author, why did Valencia continue to attend classes
A. He treasured the chance of learning.
B. He wished to show his determination.
C. He needed the credits to further his study.
D. He desired to have an A on his transcripts.
26. Which of the following best describes Valencia
A. Energetic and generous. B. Positive and determined.
C. Powerful and independent. D. Considerate and knowledgeable.
27. What can we learn from the passage
A. Strike the iron while it is hot. B. No pains, no gains.
C. Where there is life, there is hope. D. It is never too old to learn.
C
“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medical
journal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill,
especially for those with heart problems and infection (感染 ). Happy men seemed to be
protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the
sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the

influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and
examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of
thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from
heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was
found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent
reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be a result of a small decrease
(减少) in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of humor on
social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality and may
make a difference to the way people deal with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven
Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.”
Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through
social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when feeling challenges are
less likely to develop their sense of humor to deal with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven
Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn
to be humorous at any age.”
28. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Humor could positively impact people’s health.
B. Joyful women can live longer than happy men.
C. Women who hardly laugh may fall ill easily.
D. Humor makes people pay more attention to their health.
29. Why do men have a higher risk of death from infection than women
A. Men have poor memories as they age.
B. Men become less humorous as they grow older.
C. Men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older.
D. Men take part in fewer social activities as they age.
30. How does the author show the research findings
A. By listing data.
B. By giving examples.
C. By making assumptions.
D. By analyzing cause and effect.
31. Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with
A. Humorless people have an unhappy childhood.
B. Children must learn to be humorous at an early age.
C. Humorous people can better deal with pressure in life.
D. Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education.

The combined influence of climate change and expanding agriculture are causing insect
populations to plummet in some parts of the world, according to a new study that determined the
abundance of bugs has dropped by half in the hardest-hit places.
Lead researcher, Dr. Charlie Outhwaite, said losing insect populations could be harmful not
only to the natural environment, but also to human health and food security, particularly with
loss of pollinators (传粉者). “Our findings highlight the urgency of actions to preserve natural
habitats, slow the expansion of high-intensity agriculture, and cut emissions to reduce climate
change,” she added.
In the latest study, the researchers pulled together data on the range and number of nearly
20,000 insect species, including bees, ants, butterflies, grasshoppers and dragonflies, at about
6,000 different locations. In areas with high-intensity agriculture and significant warming, insect
numbers have dropped by 49% and the number of different species by 27%, compared with
relatively untouched places that have so far avoided the severest effects of climate change,
according to the research, published in Nature.
But the researchers said that setting aside areas of land for nature could create a place for
insects, which need shade to survive in hot weather. “Careful management of agricultural areas,
such as preserving natural habitats near farmland, may help ensure that vital insects can still
thrive(兴旺),” said Dr. Tim Newbold.
Study researcher Peter McCann added, “We need to acknowledge how important insects
are for the environment as a whole, and for human health and well-being, in order to address the
threats we pose to them before many species are lost forever.”
32.Which word can best replace the underlined word “plummet” in Paragraph 1
A. Rise. B. Crash. C. Destroy. D. Explode.
33. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. The results of the study.
B. The problems with the study.
C. What influences insects may have.
D. What kinds of insects were included.
34. Why should areas of land for nature be set aside according to Dr. Tim Newbold
A. To provide earth. B. To provide shade.
C. To supply fresh air. D. To supply energy.
35. What is the best title for the passage
A. Insects Are Thriving B. Climate Change Is Alarming
C. Insects Are Dying off D. Land for Insects Is Expanding

develop a sense of curiosity and observe the world from different angles, it will always help you

虚的), then you will always get to experience something new.

Limiting yourself to only one type of people that share the same ideas as you can be
comforting but it doesn’t get you anywhere in life. You need to meet and experience new people
and learn what they have to offer. Share what defines you and learn from others, this will make
you wiser.
Never back away from learning
40 . Take new classes, read books, listen to educational podcasts, and so on. If
something confuses you, surf the internet and clear out your problems. All of these will

soldier asked his lieutenant(中尉) 57 he might go out into the “No Man’s Land” between

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their

One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the
way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that
his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra
agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the
morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali.
He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he
could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned
that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and
promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get
tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and
his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength,
and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the
finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the
ground.

The 23rd “Ma Zuguang Cup” Campus Science and Technology Festival
Last weekend we witnessed an extraordinary activity organized by our school—
the 23rd “Ma Zuguang Cup” Campus Science and Technology Festival.
The event kicked off with the aim of developing our scientific spirit and
improving our creativity and practical operation skills. A variety of scientific and
technological achievements designed by us students from our school and some other
friendly schools were on show in the exhibition areas. Some students actively
participated in corresponding competitions where creative ideas shone like stars.
What fun it was. Not only did the festival broaden our horizons but also
captured our genuine interest in science and technology. The activity was really met
with widespread enthusiasm and even made the headlines in the local newspaper.
读后续写
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this
point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. He dashed across the finish
line and won the fourth prize. Thinking he would let his sister down, Ali couldn't
help sobbing. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that
he won the third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for
4
breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony,
Ali felt overjoyed and relieved.
Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister
and share the thrilling news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside.
She was wondering whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting.
“Zahra, see what I have got for you.” He took the prize out of his bag with his
trembling hands. The moment Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was
she that she threw herself at Ali. “Thank you! Ali.” Tears of joy welled up in their
eyes.

M: Can I ride a bike on the beach
W: Yes, you may ride our bikes on the beach. We recommend checking the tides
and riding along the beach at low tide. It will be more comfortable to ride on sand.
But riding on the soft sand can be difficult.
M: OK. Do your bikes have new styles
W: No, all of our bikes are all old school styles. We currently only have adult male
and female beach bicycles, but we are planning to offer kids bikes next Sunday.
M: Oh, it’s a pity. Today is Friday. We will leave next Monday evening. How about
the fee
W: Well, for each bike, 24 Hours for $55, 2 Days for $65, 3 Days for $75. Free for
delivery and pick- up of any bicycle rental that is for 3 days or longer, $25 for
delivery and pick- up of bicycle rental lasting 2 days or less. We don’t offer delivery
for any rental lasting less than 24 hours.
M: Thanks. I’ll book two bikes for two days.
Text 10
Good morning, everyone. Today, we need to talk about choosing a new director
for the marketing department. There are two candidates for this position, Amy
Coleman and Sam Stewart.
First, let’s explore Amy’s qualifications for this position. On the positive side,
she has excellent communication skills and is experienced in running a marketing
team. Additionally, she is really popular among the other employees. On the other
side, Amy is not receptive to new information or viewpoints and she’s not creative
enough.
Now, turning to Sam. In the first place, Sam doesn’t have much experience or good
communication abilities, compared to Amy. But he seems to have much potential
despite his lack of experience. He is very creative and I could see that while working
with him in the same team. He works to continuously learn and improve. I know it’s
hard to find the ideal person to handle this job on the short meeting. We’ll meet here
again on Friday at 9:00. I am expecting we will make it then.
