Five Solid Reasons Why Regular Dental Visits Matter
1. Because prevention is better than cure
Regular dental check-ups are recommended to maintain healthy teeth and gums. The interval varies from three months to two years depending on your oral health. Your dentist will advise you on what's right for you. The aim of a check-up is to nip any problems in the bud, before you experience pain, lose teeth or have other health problems. Gum disease has been associated with heart disease, for example.
2. You' ve got bad breath
Bad breath is embarrassing and can sometimes leave a nasty taste in your mouth. You might have a hole in your tooth, an infection or gum disease. Your dentist can give you tips on cleaning your teeth more effectively and treat more serious disease. Your family and friends will thank you for it.
3. Your gums keep bleeding
Persistent bleeding when you floss or brush isn't normal. You might just be brushing too enthusiastically —— yes, it's possible to overdo it, but it could be gum disease. Your dentist will let you know which it is and help you resolve it.
4. To check for cancer
Dentists don't just look for holes and unhealthy gums; they can also spot mouth cancer and refer patients to hospital to see a specialist. Cases have risen by 34 percent in the past decade, according to the Oral Health Foundation, but early discovery can save your life.
5. You want to improve your confidence
More and more adults are having treatment to straighten their teeth. Not only does it make a huge difference to your smile, but it can also prevent gum disease, which is more likely to take hold if you struggle to clean crooked teeth.
21. What's the purpose of regular dental check-ups
A. To relieve your toothache.
B. To treat your heart disease.
C. To help to clean your teeth more effectively.
D. To prevent teeth and gum diseases.
22. What can't dentists do
A. Help to treat your mouth cancer.
B. Find out why your gums keep bleeding.
C. Instruct you to clean your teeth properly.
D. Straighten your teeth.
23. Where will you probably read this passage
A. Health column in a magazine. B. An advertisement for toothbrushes.
C. A dentist's diary. D. A medical research paper.

Over 80 years after he first joined the RAF, 102-year-old Jack Hemmings took to the skies again to fly one of the Heritage Hangar’ s iconic Spitfire aircraft. The flight on Monday was the first time he flew a Spitfire. Mr Hemmings said when offered the flight, he seized it with both hands and could hardly wait to try it. Following the flight, Jack Hemmings remarked that it was absolutely delightful being back behind the controls, though the ride was very shaky. “To be honest, I felt a bit out of practice. Not surprising I am not as sharp as before,” he said. The aim of the flight was to raise funds and awareness for Mission Aviation Fellowship(MAF), the world's largest humanitarian air service that Jack co-founded with fellow RAF veteran Stuart King, who passed away in 2020.
MAF works to bring aid, development and mission organizations to help people in the world's most remote areas access essentials — with an MAF plane taking off or landing every four minutes! Jack joined the RAF in1941 and over his flying career was awarded the Air Force Cross for his outstanding performance, and theRAF's Master Air Pilot award. In 1947 he became a member of the Mildmay Missionary Movement, a Christian air service which became the MAF.
Jack’ s time in the air hasn’ t always gone to plan — during an early pioneering flight, Jack and Stuart crashed into a hillside in Burundi!“Neither of us were injured except a bruise and a cut on my little finger,” Jack said. “But I have been called Crasher Jack ever since.”
Fortunately, no such accidents occurred in his more recent flight. Making history as Britain's oldest Spitfire pilot, Jack got into the cockpit (驾驶舱) alongside Spitfire pilot Barry Hughes and took off from a field in Kent, performing three victory rolls during a 20-minute flight. He called the experience“absolutely delightful.” And age is no object:“It's not incredible being 102. You just get up every day and go about your business. It's the present moment which counts —— and this one was very special indeed,” he said.
24. Why did 102-year-old Jack Hemmings fly to the skies again
A. To fulfill his personal ambition by setting a new flying record.
B. To raise money and public consciousness for a humanitarian cause.
C. To celebrate the 80th anniversary of his RAF membership.
D. To fulfill a long-standing dream to fly a Spitfire again.
25. What's the original name of MAF
A. The British Royal Air Force.
B. The RAF Veterans Association.
C. The Mildmay Missionary Movement.
D. The International Air Transport Association.
26. How severe was the accident mentioned in paragraph 3
A. Life-threatening. B. Minor.
C. Deadly. D. Disabling.
27. Which of the following words best describe Jack Hemmmings
A. Patient and passionate. B. Far-sighted and creative.
C. Adventurous and selfless. D. Committed and cautious.

When science fiction and the science of time meet, they invite us into a deep exploration of the nature of time. Despite its presence everywhere in daily life, time remains a mystery, with no definitive definition. Our concept of time may be a mental shortcut, a tool for our limited brains to comprehend change.
The English language frequently employs the noun“time,” yet we lack a satisfactory explanation for it. Concerning time, quantum (量子) mechanics and daily experiences often contradict each other, suggesting time's complexity and ambiguous nature. Our mental conception of time may never correspond with its reality in the universe, but this shouldn't stop us from exploring it.
Many science fiction quotes touch on time. Ray Cummings’ 1919 novel, The Girl in the Golden Atom, offers a memorable quote:“Time is what keeps everything from happening at once,” implying time's structural role in the universe. Blake Crouch's Recursion presents a contrasting view:“Time is a false image, a concept made out of human memory.”
Robert Charles Wilson's Spin explores various forms of time, from personal measurement to cosmic scales, emphasizing our challenging relationship with it. S. D. Unwin's One Second Per Second suggests time as chaos within a cosmic plan, with people and civilizations as its playthings. Robert V. S. Redick's Vanishing Point describes time as a trick due to our comprehension of time's flow.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek says, “Time is a companion who reminds us to cherish every moment,” emphasizing its value. David Brin's Brightness Reef describes time as a cruel judge, punishing even the successful and brilliant. Stephen Baxter's The Time Ships catches time's frightening nature, darkening human achievements in the vastness of time.
Time travel, a major topic of science fiction, is often discussed. H. G. Wells' 1895 novel The Time Machine poses the enduring question of whether moving backward and forward in time is possible. These quotes from science fiction highlight our troubled relationship with time and encourage us to think more deeply about its reality.
28. What is the overall tone of the text
A. Inquiring. B. Pessimistic. C. Persuasive. D. Definitive.
29. What can be learned about time from paragraph 2
A. Time is easy to understand but has a complex nature in science.
B. Time is a common concept in daily life well corresponding with scientific reality.
C. Daily experiences often go against scientific understandings of time.
D. Quantum physics has no impact on our understanding of time.
30. What does Stephen Baxter's The Time Ships emphasize
A. Time as a companion who reminds us to cherish every moment.
B. The insignificance of human successes in the long history of time.
C. The possibility to move backward and forward in time at will.
D. A false belief due to our comprehension of time's flow.
31. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The history of time and famous quotes in science fiction.
B. The definition of time in scientific terms and time travel.
C. The relationship between time and daily life.
D. The science of time and its exploration in science fiction.

Why do countries vary in wealth This fundamental economic question often arouses childlike curiosity. Traditional economic growth models emphasize the accumulation of production factors: labor and capital, and recently, technology or ideas. A country's wealth is believed to increase with higher per-worker capital shares and more productive use of resources.
However, this theory leaves a gap: why do some countries gain more of these factors than others The2024 Nobel Prize winners in economics argue that government quality is key.
On October 14, 2024, three U. S.-based academics, Simon Johnson, James Robinson, and Daron Acemoglu, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for their research on the historical and institutional factors contributing to global inequality. Their research stressed the need for strong institutions and the rule of law in promoting prosperity (繁荣) and reducing poverty, especially in countries troubled by dictatorship, where the ruler or the very few individuals typically exercise strict control over all aspects of society. The three academics explained that because of the highly unequal distribution of resources the countries may face the risk of social unrest and the majority of people may experience poverty.
The prizewinners identified the historical roots of weak institutional environments that are characteristics of many low-income countries today. Their research undeniably demonstrated the importance of historical uniqueness, moving development economics away from abstract growth models. Their work was a break from theories assuming an unavoidable path to modernization based on the unusual experiences of western Europe.
At a press conference, Robinson from the University of Chicago referred to his co-winners from MIT as his“best friends” and emphasized that economists do not have a cure-all or a silver bullet for solving social problems. Instead, ideas are important in terms of giving people ways to think about the problems in their society.
Although the three academics may not have been able to fully provide an account of why some countries are rich and others poor, new generations of economists have a firm foundation established on their work.
32. What production factors do traditional economic growth models highlight
A. Labor force, money for investment, and ideas.
B. Labor force, the capital city, and technology.
C. Ideas, shares and resources.
D. Capital, technology, and shares.
33. What does the underlined word“dictatorship” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Strict law. B. Absolute power.
C. Social unrest. D. Limited resources.
34. Which statement will the prizewinners probably agree with
A. Historical and institutional factors have not accounted for global inequality.
B. Weak institutional environments are significant in promoting prosperity.
C. Western Europe's experiences unnecessarily show the path to modernization.
D. Economists clearly know how to deal with social issues.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Economic Growth Models and Global Inequality
B. Strong Institutions to Reduce Poverty
C. Complete Solution to Solving Social Problems
D. New Revelation of Factors Affecting Prosperity

How to Handle Peer (同龄人) Pressure
As adolescents are the most sensitive age group, peer pressure is a common issue they often encounter during their academic journey. They have a strong desire to belong as well as for a fear of not belonging. When classmates influence each other to adopt specific behaviors, attitudes, or choices, the pressure occurs. 36 Here are some strategies to overcome these pressures:
37
Everyone has a set of values that are unique to them. Understanding personal core values and beliefs lays a solid foundation for resisting negative influences. When individuals are clear about their identity and principles, they are less likely to surrender to peer pressure. Regular personal reflection helps shape and strengthen this individual consciousness.
Establish clear boundaries.
Setting boundaries involves expressing one's thoughts, feelings, and decisions confidently and respectfully, even in the face of opposition. By firmly but mildly communicating personal boundaries and preferences, individuals can maintain control over their choices. 38
Surround oneself with supportive influences.
Building genuine connections with like-minded individuals who respect and support each other's values acts as a shield against negative influences and fosters a positive social environment, providing encouragement. 39 Their wisdom, encouragement, and support help build confidence and na vigate complex social dynamics.
View peer pressure objectively and make a balance.
40 Positive peer pressure involves peers supporting and encouraging constructive actions, such as spreading kindness, creating an active and anti-bullying atmosphere. Neutral peer pressure involves in non- harmful areas like fashion and speech patterns. In conclusion, although peer pressure is often a destructive force that needs to be overcome, it can also encourage teenagers to behave in ways that are beneficial to themselves and others.
A. Develop a strong sense of self-awareness.
B. Be positive about your own reactions and feelings.
C. Tackling peer pressure can be challenging but manageable.
D. Despite its negative implication, peer pressure can also be inspiring or neutral.

Joe, a man who was pushed into a desperate situation by the weight of life's pressures, walked unsteadily back to his rental home. Blood streaming down from his eyes and forehead. The sky was covered with thick darkness. He had only one thought in mind: return home and sink into a deep sleep.
His business failed several years ago. Then he was trapped in the hardship of pancreatitis (胰腺炎). Yet, fate did not spare him. One day, after falling down in a faint, he was diagnosed with a deadly brain disease inherited from his father. Keeping it a secret from his parents, he struggled to maintain the false image of a normal life. He injected medicine daily, rented a smaller room, and cut his expenses to the lowest, all to save more money to repay debts.
That deep night, he suffered another attack of dizziness and collapsed with his electric bike in a tunnel. His head was injured while falling down, blood shed at the scene. After returning to consciousness, he finally made his way back to his room like a drunk man. He climbed onto the bed and lay motionless, as if waiting for death.
At the same time, some people were looking for him. Officer Simon in the local police station had received several emergency calls reporting that someone had fallen down inside a tunnel and was unable to get up. “I guessed he had drunk too much. He looked very dangerous,” said a passerby.
Three policemen led by Simon responded to the emergency call. They had handled over 20 emergency cases that day and had only eaten dinner at 11 pm. Despite their tiredness, they rushed to the scene, only to find a broken electric bike and some blood on the scene. Through security cameras, they finally traced Joe’ s whereabouts and located his rental room at the end of a dark street.
