Sometimes we fail to give enough attention to the heroes closest to us. That was the case with my family. My family knew my father had been a WWII soldier. But because he didn’t discuss his experience, we didn’t dig too deeply.
We lost him last Christmas and when sorting out (整理) his things at home, we discovered what a truly great hero he was. He was once in college and majored in engineering. At the beginning of the war, he was drafted into the army, responding to the call. Just a few years later, he honorably left the army and returned home. He had also been awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the Silver Star Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
How I wish we had taken the time to learn more about his stories in the war! He would have answered questions if we had done a little research and known what to ask. Fortunately, there was one family member who took times to do that. This cousin was interested in WWⅡ. And he researched the areas where my father served. We now know a small part of my father’s story from this cousin. We learned that the Silver Star Medal was awarded to my father because he carried aninjured soldier to safety through a minefield (布雷区). And he was once inseveral well-known fights.
This year, Memorial Day has a deeper meaning for my family because we have known more about my father’s service in the army. Many activities were held by my family in memory of my father. We’re also grateful tothat cousin who took the time to find out more.
I hope you can do the same while your heroes are stillwith you. Find out as much as you can. Even if they don’t like to talk about their experiences and sacrifices (牺牲), chances are that they’ll answer direct questions if you do a little digging. You’ll be richly rewarded with a familystory for generations to come.

A. By killing enemies in a minefield.
B. By keeping details in battles secret.

26. Which of the following can best describe the author’sfather
A. Active and easygoing. B. Helpful and proud.
C. Fearless and talkative. D. Brave and modest.
27. What does the author suggest we do in the lastparagraph
A. Share family stories with children.
B. Dig more about heroes around us.
C. Show respect for national heroes.
D. Be grateful to those helping us.

A young Dutch inventor is making his effort to cleanup floating plastic (漂浮的塑料) from the PacificOcean. He has developed a floating device (设备) to trap plastic waste moving into rivers before it reachesthe oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called “The Ocean Cleanup”. Its purpose is to develop the system. Last year, Slat showed the next step: a floating device which is called Interceptor. It cleans plastic out of rivers. The device need solar (太阳的) power to work. “The 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world’s oceans,” said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $775,660, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close “the tap” , which means stopping more plastic fromreaching the ocean in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years.“This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done,we could truly renew our oceans again,” said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from the damage caused by larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is dropped into containers. The devices ends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
What do we know about Interceptor
A. It is powered by energy from the sun. B. It is being under test.
C. It is mainly used in the oceans. D. It can help reorganize waste.
29.What does the underlined phrase “the tap”refer to in Paragraph 3

30.What’s the function of the device’s nose
A. To ensure the device’s safety. B. To send operators text messages.
C. To empty the waste. D. To serve as containers.
31.Where is the text most likely from
A. A novel. B. A magazine. C. A diary. D. A guidebook.

My dad and I had been looking forward to the State cross-country race of my senior year of high school, which would be the climax (顶点) of my life.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it to the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd — telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me.He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy tracks of Arizona.
Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We moved forward miles and miles with our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal — too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I stared at the crowd; a lot of familiar faces from school came into my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement appeared on his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The hot sun beat upon my back. I was sweaty all over. Nothing was going to stop me, though.

第一节
In order to foster appreciation for the art of calligraphy and provide a platform for students to show their handwriting skills, our school held a New Year’s Chinese Calligraphy Competition last week.
100 excellent calligraphy works selected from each class were displayed in the Art Hall. All the students voted to decide on the winners. Besides, several calligraphy masters were invited to write on the spot, presenting their superb handwriting skills, which attracted many students to watch, applauding and cheering.
This calligraphy competition was a great success. One participant said that it was such a meaningful activity and he hoped there would be more similar activities to promote traditional Chinese culture.
第二节
However, without warning, my strength was running out. I continued to run even though my lungs fought to take in enough air and my feet transformed into cement bricks. When the finish line came in sight, I wanted to run at full speed to the glory but my knees and legs gave way. They were as weak as jelly. Even though I knew my dreams of making it to the top fifteen had been destroyed, I had to finish the race. With all of the strength left in me, I dragged my feet moving slowly, eventually across the finish line. Shame flooded over me as Dad pulled me into his arms.
I lowered my head, saying, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” He gave me a gentle smile and said. “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.” Lifting my face, I saw my dad’s eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time and the work we had put into our dream. The miles we had run together, all for this race, flashed across my mind. “But we worked so hard. What about our dream ” I asked. At that moment, the world stood still. He reached over for my hand holding back his own tears and said. “Don’t you know that you already made my dream come true ”

W: If I were you, I would have a talk with her and persuade her to dismiss the idea from her mind.
Text 2
M: Is there any interesting news online
W: Yes, after a safe trip from the Memphis Zoo, giant panda Ya Ya has settled into a new home at Beijing Zoo.
M: Awesome! I was planning to have a barbecue, but now let’s go to see her this weekend.
W: That’s great. Let me book the tickets.
Text 3
W: Did you see the film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 last Friday
M: No, I watched it on the following night. What about you
W: I had some unexpected visitors that night, so I went on Sunday.
Text 4
W: Henry, we’ve been studying for two hours. Let’s have some coffee for relaxing.
M: Good. What kind of coffee would you like to drink, coffee with sugar, or plain coffee
W: Neither. I prefer coffee with some milk.
Text 5
M: Sarah, I’ve decided to quit. Don’t you think staying in the office building for a long time is too boring
W: Maybe. But here we can focus on our work.
M: I’d prefer flexible work. I can work anywhere, perhaps in a café, or on a bullet train.
Text 6
W: Richard, have you heard the news At a high school in Monterrey, Mexico, rows of new bike desks allow students to burn calories with light exercise while completing class assignments.
M: I’ve read it on the Internet.
W: Do you think it is helpful
M: Of course. When the students are physically active, it also helps keep them focused.
W: Maybe we’ll have desks like those in our classroom someday.
M: I expect that. Now let’s begin our class. Our teacher is coming in.
Text 7
M: Donna, any plans for tomorrow
W: I have no good idea. Maybe just stay at home.
M: Why not go to the Singapore Musical Box Museum Last week my wife and I took our son there. It was really exciting. My son was overjoyed to see different kinds of music boxes.
W: Does the museum offer free guided tours
M: Yes. The guide introduced the museum’s history, founders, and music box basics. If you want to own a music box or get it as a gift, the museum has a shop with a large variety.
W: That sounds exciting! I can’t wait to visit it.
Text 8
M: Can I help you
W: Yes. I bought this skirt for my daughter here last week, but the stitches are coming off. Anyway, I’d like to ask for a refund for this skirt.
M: I’m sorry. They are not refundable, but we can change it for you. I’m afraid we don’t have another red one.
W: Oh What will I do then
M: Would you like to choose a different color We do have this skirt in yellow and blue.
W: My daughter doesn’t like either of those colors.
M: Sorry. This is the only one we’ve got now. How about fixing it up for you
W: That’s all right.
Text 9
W: Good evening. Our guest today is artist Sam Cox, or “Mr. Doodle”. Welcome, Mr. Doodle! It's amazing that you’ve covered your house with your signature doodles. Our audience is curious about it.
M: Well, the bedroom is actually the first room that I started. I doodled a different theme based on the purpose of each room, including food in the kitchen, clouds in the “thinking room”, the ocean in the bathroom and so on.
W: When did you start to draw pictures
M: When I was about one year old, my mother taught my brother and I to paint. As a teenager, I drew small comics about the subject with my friends. By the age of 25, I had chosen to be a full-time graffiti artist.
W: How do you describe your work
M: It’s just such a great process. I just make myself completely involved in this free-flowing state of creation, and experience the joy of creation.
Text 10
Most young people like to enjoy playing on their smartphones in their spare time. But Li Ruxue is different. He often does some research in a forest and isolates himself from the outside world. In his college years, Li actively took part in field research with his teachers. After graduation, he joined a gibbon protection organization, where one of his major responsibilities was picking up gibbon feces. Through analyzing the DNA from the feces, researchers can protect them better. So over the past four and a half years, Li has followed gibbons and collected their feces for researchers. Though the work is a bit tiring, it’s meaningful for him. He has never regretted his choice or felt alone. Like Li, Chu Wenwen has also worked to protect animals. As her father is engaged in wildlife research, Chu has long been surrounded by wild animals. After graduating from university in 2017, she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps. She thinks she is lucky to live in such a great era when young people can fulfill their aspirations, and the country strongly supports the nature conservation.
Both Li Ruxue and Chu Wenwen set an example to our young generation. We should do our part like them and take part in the action of protecting animals.
