In a small coastal community in Ecuador known as La Isla, I was handing out clothes and toys to children standing in a long line in their schoolyard. They had gathered there that morning, likely wearing the only clothes they owned. They were quiet and polite, eyes bright with excitement. Watching this, my mind flashed back to a day I would never forget.
I was five years old that Christmas Eve in 1988, growing up in Ecuador, with my parents and elder sister. My father came into my bedroom and gave me a plastic cowboy. I’d never owned a real toy of any kind. My family didn’t have much. My mom stayed home, caring for my sister and me. My dad drove a food delivery truck and was on the road for days at a time.
“I hope you like your toy,” my father said, kneeling down and holding me close. I felt the warmth of his body, as if in giving me this to y he was also giving me a part of himself. Even at age five, I knew that had been a gift.
By sixth grade our family moved to the US, and life got easier. I excelled in high school. Every good grade was a thank-you to my parents for all they’d done for me. I went on to college, and after graduation, with my degree in hand, I became a pharmacist (药剂师). I was finally able to buy nice gifts for my family, but I could never give in equal measure the love I’d felt from that unexpected gift I’d received as a little boy. I wished every child could know that feeling.
Two years into my career, I made my first trip to La Isla. Two years later, I returned with my nonprofit organization called Toys for Ecuador. My parents, sister and I traveled to towns across rural Ecuador with Christmas presents for children and gift baskets for seniors.
It was a journey that not only fulfilled a childhood wish to share that special feeling of love and generosity, but also reaffirmed (重申) my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
4.What reminded the author of his childhood story
A.The scene of children’s receiving gifts. B.The Christmas celebration.
C.The children’s happy school life. D.The preparation of Christmas gifts.
5.Which words can best describe the author’s father
A.Grateful and generous. B.Outgoing and romantic.

6.How did the author repay his parents
A.By satisfying their wish to make him a pharmacist.
B.By improving his academic achievements.
C.By buying them some unexpected gifts.
D.By setting up a nonprofit organization.
7.What can be the best title for the text
A.Toys for Ecuador Gave Children Christmas Gifts
B.Father’s Gift Pushed a Boy to Succeed Academically
C.Father’s Love Never Left Boyhood Memories Behind
D.A Plastic Cowboy Inspired Toys for Ecuador
Trying to imagine fat, white sheep jumping one by one over a fence, is a well-known treatment for sleeplessness. I’ve often wondered just who came up with such a silly suggestion. If the idea is to bore you to sleep, why not count backward And who decided on sheep Why not rabbits, horses, frogs or kangaroos And does it really help you fall asleep Search online, and you’ll soon find stories about a study on battling insomnia that put the concept to the test.
“In reality, that wasn’t the point of the research,” said senior author Allison Harvey, who conducted the research. Their study wasn’t about counting sheep; it was just about using imagery to fight sleeplessness. In her research 50 people were divided into three groups. The first had no instructions on how to fall asleep, while members of the second were told to distract (分心) themselves from thoughts, worries and concerns in any way they wanted. The third group was instructed to perform an interesting and engaging imagery task, such as creating or remembering a waterfall, a holiday or a summer afternoon in the sun.
Those who used imagery reported falling asleep much faster than either of the other two groups, and they rated their thoughts, worries and concerns to be less uncomfortable and painful than people in the distraction or no instruction group.
As it happened, two of the study participants in the distraction group did count sheep as a way to fall asleep “and somehow people accepted that, I guess because they thought it was fun,” Harvey said.
While she didn’t actually study counting sheep as a way of overcoming sleeplessness and isn’t aware of any other studies to do so, Harvey does have an opinion based on her years as a sleep specialist.
“Something as ordinary as counting sheep usually does not do the trick,” she said. “As everyone is different and not one option is going to help every single time, we have worked out a menu of options with people.”
8.What does the underlined word “insomnia” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Sleeplessness. B.Illness. C.Distraction. D.Laziness.

B.The distraction group reported the most benefits.
C.Its initial aim was to test the effectiveness of imagery.
D.Every participant was given some instructions.
10.What does Allison Harvey think of counting sheep for sleep
A.Creative. B.Questionable. C.Practical. D.Traditional.
11.What will the text continue to talk about probably
A.Alternative methods for falling asleep.
B.Various strategies to improve people’s health.
C.Historical origins of counting sheep for sleep.
D.Scientific theories behind counting sheep for sleep.
High school students’ scores on the ACT college admission test have been falling for six continuous years to their lowest in more than three decades. ACT is short for American College Testing.
The average ACT composite(综合的) score for US students was 19.5 out of 36. Last year, the average score was 19.8. Among California’s 2023 high school graduates, the average composite score — of 25.7 — was significantly higher than the national average. But that’s in large part because only an estimated 4% of high school graduates in the state actually took the exam, among the lowest rates in the nation. The average scores in reading, science and math were all below benchmarks (基准分) the ACT says students must reach to have a high probability of success in first - year college courses. The average score in English was just above the benchmark but still declined compared to last year.
Many universities have made standardized admissions tests, like the ACT, optional for criticism that such tests favor the wealthy and disadvantage students with lower income. Some, including the University of California system, have stopped admitting students based on the ACT scores even if submitted.
Some high school students are unsure why the ACT is ever required because colleges can look at different qualities of the students who are applying outside of just a one - time test score.
But Janet Godwin, CEO for the nonprofit ACT, said the ACT scores are still helpful for placing students in the right college courses and preparing academic advisors to better support them. In terms of college readiness, even in a test - optional environment, these kinds of objective test scores about academic readiness are incredibly important. Of students who were tested, only 21% met benchmarks for success in college - level classes in all subjects. Research from Godwin’s group shows students who meet those benchmarks have a 50% chance of earning a B or better and nearly a 75% chance of earning a C or better in corresponding courses.
About 1.4 million students in the US took the ACT this year, an increase from last year. However, the numbers have not returned to previous levels. Godwin said she doesn’t believe those numbers will ever fully recover, partly because of test- optional admission policies.
12.What does the text say about the ACT
A.The benchmarks set for it are too high to reach.
B.More and more students take part in it every year.
C.The average ACT score is lower and lower recently.
D.A higher ACT score guarantees a student’s success in college.
13.Why do some universities stop considering the ACT scores
A.Few high school students take the ACT seriously.
B.The average ACT score is too low to consider.
C.It is thought that the ACT is unfair for some students.
D.Universities prefer students who have different qualities.
14.What can the ACT scores be used to do according to Godwin
A.Determine which college the students should apply to.
B.Reform the universities’ education system accordingly.
C.Urge the students to improve their academic performance.
D.Evaluate the students’ readiness for college- level coursework.
15.How does the author support his argument
A.By listing figures. B.By making definitions.
C.By analysing previous research. D.By explaining causes and effects.
二、七选五

六、读后续写
34.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Wayne Boone is a 53-year-old truck driver for a paper- recycling company in Suffolk, Virginia. Every day, he drives the empty 18- heel truck up Interstate 64 in Chesapeake toward Virginia Beach, about 50 kilometers away, where he will pick up his first load of the day. One morning in April, the strong winds gave Wayne Boone’s truck a good whipping (鞭打).
He planned to change into the left lane of the G. A. Treakle Memorial Bridge when the storm let loose its full force. Rain hammered Boone’s windshield. Winds grew fierce. As he was turning, Boone’s front wheels met the wet surface just as a powerful wind blew the driver’s side of his truck. It felt like the wind lifted the truck clear off the surface. His truck crashed into the guardrail (护栏) on the far right edge.
He struggled to regain control, but another wind, blowing more violently, pushed it upward from below, lifting the truck cab (驾驶舱), with Boone inside, over the edge of the bridge before dropping it again. If he felt any hope of survival before, it disappeared. The truck aimed straight down toward the grey-black water. In the end, Boone’s truck was hanging over the bridge, under 21 meters of which was a deep river.
Boone was badly injured, half blinded by the blood pouring into his eyes and suffering from shock. He forced himself to focus. If he had any chance of escaping the cab and surviving, he had to get out of his seatbelt. Gathering all his strength, he pulled himself between the seats and put himself back as far as he could behind the driver’s seat. He struggled to grab his mobile phone, but it was out of his reach. After he was hung in the wind for an hour, waiting to die, Boone was almost exhausted. Was he going to get out of here alive He had never panicked. He had accepted his fate (命运). He was ready to go if that’s what was meant to be when he heard a noise was drawing nearer.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
