一、阅读理解
We are diverse in so many ways, therefore our financial recommendations should also be tailored to our preferences. Before we seek financial guidance, how do we get to know our money personalities This is Your Brain On Money, with questions answered by financial therapist, Dr. Brad Klontz.
How do our personalities demonstrate in the way we deal with money
After studying tens of thousands of people, we’ve identified four patterns of beliefs around money that people exhibit. The first is money avoidance. No surprise, if so, it is going to have a negative impact on your financial outcomes. The second is what we call money worship. You’re putting money on a pedestal-more money is going to make me happier and it’s going to solve all my problems. The third is money status, where we compare self-worth with our net worth. The fourth is money vigilance. This is the money personality of the wealthy and the self-made wealthy and the ultra-wealthy.
How can these money personalities impact our behavior
There are some people who can be hot-headed. And that can result in good options, but can also make them make decisions without fully looking into everything. Or maybe someone who’s a little bit more risk- tolerant. So they’re more of a saver or they don’t invest right away. There are ways those things become part of our internal narrative of how we think about money, and of how we handle risk or opportunities. And if we are aware of that, we can make better decisions for ourselves. The more you know yourself, the better you can shape your decisions. It could actually change whatever decision you want to make financially in the future.

When Meng Jintao was a child, power outages in his rural hometown sparked his curiosity: Why can’t we store electricity during regular times and use it when the power goes out
Now 29, Meng has turned this childhood curiosity into reality with his advanced iron-based flow energy storage system. Distinguished by its massive storage capacity, high safety standards, and long-term endurance, this technology represents a major advancement in energy storage.
In 2013, Meng began his studies at Hefei University of Technology in Anhui, East China, majoring in new energy materials and devices. During his university years, he traveled to Qinghai and Gansu provinces in Northwest China for research, where he observed the initial successes of wind and solar power projects. However, he learned from power station staff that much of the energy generated by wind turbines was unstable and could not be effectively used. It was during this period that Meng recognized the urgent need for advanced storage solutions to stabilize energy supply and release it steadily to the grid, thereby increasing efficiency. This realization led him to develop the iron-based flow energy storage system.
“This system functions like a large power bank for cities,” he explained. According to Meng, while lithium (锂) batteries are well-established, there is a growing need for a more affordable and safer storage solution. He chose iron for its cost-efficiency and the abundant availability of iron resources in China. Iron- based flow energy storage systems are also more economical and use water as a solution, making them fire- resistant and safer.
In 2020, while pursuing his master’s degree at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Meng achieved a significant milestone by successfully testing the first iron-based flow battery in his lab. “Seeing the battery model start its charging and discharging cycles was a moment of endless pride,” he said, “with China announcing its double carbon goals, I wanted to transform my research into a tangible product that could both benefit the country and make a difference.”
Through continuous adjustments, accurate research, and determined experimentation, Meng and his team completed their first kilowatt-level energy storage system in 2021, suitable for everyday use. “I want to keep improving the technology to make energy storage safer and more cost-effective, both in China and worldwide,” he said.
4.What inspired Meng Jintao to seek new solutions for energy storage
A. His observations of power cuts in rural areas.
B. His major in new energy materials and devices.
C. His experience of working with lithium batteries.
D. His witness to the success of renewable power projects.
5.What characteristic of iron led Meng Jintao to choose it
A. Its work efficiency. B. Its unlimited supply.
C. Its economic advantage. D. Its environmental friendliness.
6.Which of the following words can best describe Meng Jintao
A. Cautious and generous. B. Capable and determined.
C. Intelligent and considerate. D. Hard-working and outgoing.
7.What is the most suitable title for this passage
A. The Future of Renewable Energy: Strengths and Weaknesses.
B. Meng Jintao: Leading Figure in Power Generation Technology.
C. From Curiosity to Creation: Meng Jintao’s Journey in Energy Storage.
D. Lithium vs. Iron: The Ongoing Battle for Better Energy Storage Solution.
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are dark matter that may have been born in the first second after the Big Bang. Over the last 13. 8 billion years they would have spread across the universe. According to a new study, these tiny, ancient black holes could rush through our Solar System.
A team of scientists has worked out that they might speed through our neck of the woods as often as once a decade, based on the estimated distribution of dark matter across a given region of space. They found that a PBH, packing the mass of a small planet into a space the size of a single atom (原子), should stream through the inner Solar System about once every 10 years or so. Although we wouldn’t be able to directly see it, such a visitor would still make its existence known. If a PBH came within about 280 million miles of Mars, it would result in a detectable wobble (摇晃) in the red planet’s course. The shift would only be about 1 meter over 10 years, but that’s enough for us to pick up, since we can measure the distance of Mars from Earth to within about 10 centimeters.
The study started with a fun question: what would happen if a PBH passed a person Lead author, scientist Tung Tran from MIT, roughly calculated that if one came within a meter of you, you’d be thrown about 6 meters away in 1 second.
While that is rather unlikely, it got the team wondering how a PBH flying through the solar system would affect planets and moons. “The numbers we got were not very clear. There are many other factors in the solar system that could act as some sort of resistance to cause the wobble to dampen out,” says Tung. So, the researchers then created the effects in lab which is the same as a PBH flyby on Mercury, Venus, and Mars to see if their wobbles would be easier to notice. Of those, Mars gave the clearest signal, largely because it’s such a heavily monitored planet.
Still, more detailed experiments involving more objects will need to be conducted to get a more accurate understanding of those factors. “We need as much clarity as we can of the expected backgrounds, such as the typical speeds of space rocks in contrast to these PBHs,” says MIT physicist David Kaiser. It is our hope that in the coming decades, advances in science will offer new evidence. With a bit more work, it’s possible that astronomers could get lucky, spot a wobble, and uncover one of the biggest mysteries about universe.
8.How can scientists notice a PBH speeding through Solar System
A. By monitoring a single atom nearby. B. By observing an obvious shake of Mars.
C. By measuring the Mars-Earth distance. D. By analyzing the presence of dark matter.
9.What is a passing PBH possibly capable of
A. Affecting a planet to rock in its course.
B. Throwing away a person in the distance.
C. Creating resistance to cancel out a wobble.
D. Giving Mars the most obvious signals to shake.
10.Which of the following best explains “dampen out” underlined in paragraph 4
A. Be difficult to make out. B. Regularly occur.
C. Be interesting to observe. D. Narrowly escape.
11.What is the last paragraph mainly about in terms of the research
A. Its current limitations. B. Astronomers with good luck.
C. Its potential applications. D. Expectations for further studies.
Is forgiveness against our human nature To answer our question, we need to ask a further question: What is the essence of our humanity For the sake of simplicity, people consider two distinctly different views of humanity.
The first view involves dominance and power. In an early paper on the psychology of forgiveness, Droll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is more aggressive than forgiving allows. Those who forgive are against their basic nature much to their harm. In his opinion, forgivers are compromising their well-being as they offer mercy to others, who might then take advantage of them.
The second view involves the theme of cooperation, mutual respect, and even love as the basis of who we are as humans. Researchers find that to fully grow as human beings, we need both to receive love from and offer love to others. Without love, our connections with a wide range of individuals in our lives can fall apart. Even common sense strongly suggests that the will to power over others does not make for harmonious interactions. For example, how well has slavery worked as a mode of social harmony
From this second viewpoint of who we are as humans, forgiveness plays a key role in the biological and psychological integrity of both individuals and communities because one of the outcomes of forgiveness, shown through scientific studies, is the decreasing of hate and the restoration of harmony. Forgiveness can break the cycle of anger. At least to the extent the people from whom you are estranged (不和的) accept your love and forgiveness and are prepared to make the required adjustments. Forgiveness can heal relationships and reconnect people.
As an important note, when we take a classical philosophical perspective, we see the distinction between potentiality and actuality. We are not necessarily born with the capacity to forgive, but instead with the potential to learn about it and to grow in our ability to forgive. The actuality of forgiving, in real situations, develops with practice.
12.How does Droll think of forgivers according to the early paper
A. They can be really powerful. B. They deserve others’ respect.
C. They are acting out of kindness D. They might get themselves hurt.
13.What does the example in Paragraph 3 illustrate
A. To fight is to grow. B. To give is to receive.
C. To forgive is to punish. D. To dominate is to harm.
14.What is the writer’s attitude toward forgiveness
A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Favorable. D. Objective.
15.What does the last paragraph suggest about how forgiveness develops
A. Forgiveness improves with practice.
B. Forgiveness happens easily with time.
C. Forgiveness is practical and automatic.
D. Forgiveness comes from social experiences.

The sky had gone dark, and Dad wasn’t home yet. He worked all day gardening for private houses. In Georgia, that meant endless work to do. Mom told us to wait for Dad so that we could eat together. Even when Dad didn’t get home until after eight or eight thirty, I didn’t mind.
A few years ago, Dad bought me a backboard and hoop and installed a tall metal pole on the side of the driveway so we could have our own basketball court. It was a court made of dirt and pebbles, but still, it was a fun place.
I would shoot baskets in my spare time. Still, during the summer months, between part-time jobs delivering newspapers, helping Dad cutting lawns, we came pretty close to spending as much of the day as we could on the court. Dad taught me all sorts of shots-hook shots, foul shots, fade-away jumpers, shots from the comer, tried to send the ball through each other’s legs and passed it behind our backs. Each time I felt frustrated and depressed, Dad would invite me to join in a shot game. I didn’t know what it was about holding a ball and sending it into the air and waiting for it to drop into the hoop (圈) , but it felt like magic-All the problems of the world seemed to fade away, and I was the magician.
Dad once told me he felt pretty much the same way while playing basketball. It was one of the things Dad and I shared-the magic in basketball. Lately, though, it didn’t seem like Dad saw a lot of magic in his job. When he came home each night, it was earlier than when he usually arrived home. I could perceive something different.

34.答案:With the financial crisis spreading, most of his customers lost their jobs. So did Dad as a matter of course, a wave of helplessness washing over him. He dragged himself back home with heavy steps. At the sight of the worried expression on his face, I fell apart inside. What could I do to stop him sinking into a dark abyss The ball held in my hands sparked like an inspiration. “Want to join in a shot game, Dad ” I asked, knowing how much he loved basketball and thinking maybe it might cheer him up. “Sure,” he said, opening his eyes and smiling a weary smile.
I bounce-passed the ball to him, and Dad caught it naturally. He held the ball in both hands between his knees, broke through my defence skillfully, and shot at the basket. It was perfectly measured so that the ball dropped clearly through the hoop. “Whoa, what a shot!” I cheered and clapped. Dad’s long-lost smile finally came back, with his face glowing brilliantly like sunshine. Magically, it was shooting baskets with me that helped him forget his worries in job for a short time and it was the warmth of family that revived him through hardship.
