In 1933, an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the filmmaker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney’s cartoon film for children. When Walt Disney heard Nash’s voice, he said “Stop! That’s our duck!”
The duck was the now-famous Donald Duck (唐老鸭), who first appeared in 1934 in the film The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat (水上住宅) and wore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audience liked him because he was lazy and greedy (贪婪的), and because he lost his temper (发脾气) very quickly. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey’s eight nephews (侄子). Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn’t a goody-goody like Mickey.
In the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, Donald and his friends Mickey and Goofy made hundreds of Disney cartoons. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared—there were no more new cartoons.
Clarence Nash died in February 1985. But today’s children can still see the old cartoons on television and hear that famous voice.

Once my best friend Julia e-mailed me. She asked me to help her look after her pet cat when she left for Shanghai to study. I was busy with my schoolwork, but I agreed. However, I was too busy to look after it, and then something bad happened to the pet when it stayed with me. Julia was angry and said she wouldn’t believe me anymore. I hoped she could trust me again. Then she said unless I went to see an interesting film with her and said sorry to her, she would forgive (原谅) me.
However, I broke my promise again. Because my teacher suddenly told us that we would have an important exam the next day. So I needed to prepare for it and forgot our appointment (约定). When Julia called me, I was preparing for my exam carefully. I didn’t answer the phone in time. This made her angrier than before. She didn’t talk to me for some days. After the exam, I talked to her about the reasons for both the two things. She was so understanding that she forgave me.
I know that sometimes I need to say “No”.

How to save a life
The students at No 19 Middle School in Nanning, Guangxi were having a class. Suddenly, a curtain (窗帘) went on fire and the fire spread quickly. Some students were burned.
Not really! This was a fire drill (消防演习) that took place in the school on April 28. After the drill, experts from the Red Cross (红十字会) gave a lesson to 400 students on how to deal with some injuries, such as burns and bleeding (流血).
Every year in China, 1.2 million emergencies take place, according to Xinhua. These lead to at least 200,000 deaths and 1.7 million injuries. Experts say that the ten minutes after an accident are the most important moments for saving a life.
May 8 is World Red Cross Day. Let’s learn the steps for how to save lives.
When there is an accident, remember Dr ABC:
1. Danger – Check the area to see that you are not putting yourself or the hurt person in any more danger. For example, check that there are no loose electrical cables (松弛的电线).
2. Response (反应) – Call out to the hurt person or shake him or her to see if he or she is conscious (有意识的).
3. Airway (通风) – If the hurt person isn’t responding, tip back his or her head and open the mouth. Remove anything that might be blocking the airway.
4. Breathing (呼吸) – Put your ear to the person’s mouth to hear if he or she is breathing, and watch to see if his or her chest is rising and falling. If he or she is breathing, ensure that he or she is in a stable side position.
If he or she is not breathing, give him or her five full breaths in 10 seconds.
5. Circulation (血液循环) – Feel and look at the person to try and judge if his or her circulation has stopped. If he or she is cold, or has turned pale or blue, it is likely that there is no circulation.

New ‘drivers’ come to town
Self-driving cars bring both questions and solutions
Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. Since August, driverless taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
Why do we develop self-driving cars
Self-driving cars give us many benefits (好处). They use computers to sense (感知) the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams (堵塞) and better parking of cars. For disabled (残疾的) or blind people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily.
According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 1.35 million people are killed on roads around the world. Many more are injured (受伤). Self-driving cars could reduce (减少) road accidents by 90 percent and save governments a lot of money, said the website TechDim. The main cause of car accidents is human error (错误). By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose focus (注意力) like humans do.
But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react (反应) as fast as a human driver could. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars would struggle (费力) to see the lines on the road. It might lead to an accident. The car’s computer system could also get hacked (非法入侵) by someone, causing it to crash or change its destination (目的地).
It’s clear that there is a lot of work to do to make self-driving cars a common and safe sight (景象) on our roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen, said China Daily.
84.In which city can we find driverless taxis
85.What benefits can self-driving cars give disabled people
86.How many people are killed on roads around the world each year
87.What is the main cause of car accidents
88.What is the disadvantage of self-driving cars when something unexpected happens
What will our life be like in 100 years No one can truly know the answer, but we are sure that it will be very different from the life today.
My brother David makes some predictions. Here are some of his ideas.
First, people will have less work to do.
People will spend most of their time playing sports and traveling. So people will become stronger and healthier, and they will live longer as well.
Second, computers will control (控制) the cars and people don’t need to drive. So there will be fewer and fewer traffic accidents (交通事故).
Planes will be very popular, and most people would like to take a plane for their trips. As for robots, they’ll be very popular with human beings. Every family will have a robot. Robots will do dangerous and heavy work for people.
Third, people will be able to live in the sea, on the moon or on other planets. The earth won’t be crowded or noisy any more. So there will be much space for people to plant trees. There will be less pollution.
Finally, water shortage (短缺) will become one of the most serious problems. If we don’t save water now, people will start wars for water in 100 years.
89.What will people spend most of their time doing in the future
90.How will most people go traveling
91.Why will robots be very popular with people

Have you heard about “Survival (生存) Holidays” “Survival Holidays” is for children to go into the lonely place for exciting activities.
Now about 1,100 companies are allowed to take children into the great outdoors without their parents. The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to nature is good for children. Is “Survival Holidays” a wonderful idea Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing (打扰) them. Parents care too much about their children. They like to see the children being busy with activities that are controlled(控制) by adults, but children don’t know what to do when they are in danger. Even small danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them. Many people think the survival activities are good for children.
