When Sam Fisher took his two young sons and their cousin on a hike in the Badlands of North Dakota, he was probably expecting a day of sightseeing and light exercise. What he could not have expected, however, was the group coming across the remains of a young Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙) that had lived millions of years ago.
Fisher and the boys were surely excited by their discovery, but they didn’t know what to do with the fossil(化石). Fisher sent a photo to his classmate, Dr. Lyson, an expert in the Denver Museum of Nature& Science. Then, Dr. Lyson arrived with a skilled team to dig up the fossil. Together, they unearthed the remains of the teenage Tyrannosaurus rex.
Their find was considered as an “incredible discovery” by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. It is unusual to find complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, and even more unusual to find the remains of a young one, so Dr. Lyson was excited when he realized what they had unearthed. The fossil, called “Teen Rex”, is between 12 and 14 years old at the time of death. Even though it was still growing, the dinosaur already weighed 3,500 pounds and was 25 feet long, though these impressive measurements still put it at about half the size of a fully developed Tyrannosaurus rex.
“These boys have made an incredible dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world,” says Dr. Lyson. “I’m excited for museum guests to dig into the “Teen Rex Discovery” experience, which I think will inspire the imagination and . wonder, not only in our community, but around the world!”
The fossil will be on show as part of the temporary (临时的) Discovering Teen Rex exhibition, which will open at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science next month. In addition to the exhibition, the museum will also be screening a new 40-minute documentary T. REX.
4. How did Sam Fisher feel when they found the fossil
A. Satisfied. B. Awkward. C. Amazed. D. Alarmed.
5. Why did Fisher send a photo of the fossil to Dr. Lyson
A. To ask for help. B. To sell the fossil.
C. To find a museum. D. To show off the fossil.
6. What did Dr. Lyson think of the discovery
A. He believed it was just another common find.
B. He considered it of great value to science.
C. He thought it would attract little interest.
D. He was uncertain about its significance.
7. What might the author continue to talk about
A. A summary of the exhibition. B. Details about the documentary.
C. Advice for unearthing the fossil. D. Information on how to become an expert.

People are motivated to try a vegetarian diet for different reasons - from religious beliefs to potential health and environmental benefits. But many people have a hard time sticking with it. In fact studies show many self-reported vegetarians actually do consume some animal products.
“A lot of people who want to be vegetarian are perhaps notable to.” says Dr. Nabeel Yassen of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “We wanted to know if genetics is part of the reason,” he says.
Yaseen and his colleagues compared the DNA of about 330,000 people, using data from the UK Biobank initiative. The study included 5.324 vegetarians, who had not eaten any animal flesh or products obtained from animals for at least one year. They found 34 genes that may play a role in maintain a strict vegetarian diet. And they identified 3 genes that are more tightly linked to it.
“What we can say is that these genes have something to do with vegetarianism (素食主义),” Yaseen says. “Perhaps vegetarians have different variants (变体) of these genes that make them able to pursue a strict vegetarian diet,” he explains. The study is published in PLOS ONE, a science journal.
Of the three genes most strongly associated with vegetarianism, the authors say two of them have important functions in fat metabolism(新陈代谢). The study can’t answer exactly how genetic differences could shape or influence vegetarians, but Dr. Yaseen has some ideas. “One theory is that maybe there’s a fat nutrient, or nutrients, in meat that some people need and others don’t,” he says.
“Lots of factors influence what we eat, everything from our taste preferences, to our budgets, to our culture. So, the idea that food choice is also influenced by genetics is not surprising,” Yaseen says. “But this is just the first step,” he adds, “More research is needed to determine which genes and which variants maybe crucial.”
8. What is the purpose of the study
A. To promote vegetarianism among senior people.
B. To determine why people choose a vegetarian diet.
C. To explore the cultural influence on vegetarianism.
D. To find out relation between genes and vegetarianism.
9. How does the author mainly organize Paragraph 3
A. By giving examples.
B. By giving definitions.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By listing some numbers.
10. Which of the following can replace the underlined “flesh” in paragraph 3
A. egg B. milk C. meat D. blood
11. What can we learn from Yaseen’s words
A. Genes have no influence on vegetarianism.
B. More research needs conducting to identify critical genes
C. The study has successfully determined the key genetic variants.
D. The study has accurately explained how genetics shape food choices.

A new center at the Stanford School of Engineering will fund artificial intelligence(AI) in the service of space science, exploration, and business.
The Center for Aerospace Autonomy Research, or CAESAR, aims at making these activities more efficient, safe, and continuous. Researchers at the center say that AI could optimize navigation for spacecraft, skillfully land space vehicles on planets or asteroids (小行星), allow driverless rovers to make decisions about where to go, what to avoid, and what to analyze, keep tabs on all the space junk( some60,000 pieces, at last count) spinning around Earth, and much more.
To achieve such ambitions, Marco Pavone, CAESAR co-founder and relative professor of aeronautics and astronautics, announced that one of the center’s main projects will be to build a foundation model for space pursuits. A foundation model is one kind of general-purpose AI that’s trained on huge amounts of data and can solve various tasks, like producing text, images, and even videos. “This space foundation model,” Pavone said, “will be designed to synthesize (合成) information across a range of modalities, including vision, text, remote sensing ( such as multi-spectral (多色谱的) imagery and radar), and space-object catalogs, and will be able to address different kinds of space-related tasks, including situational awareness, positioning, and navigation.”
Simone D’ Amico, CAESAR co-founder and associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics, made it clear that he, Pavone, and their co-workers arrange to proceed carefully, with eyes wide open to the potential risks (隐患) of seeking AI for spacecraft and robots. He stated that in some cases, AI components are by no means the most effective choice for space systems.
“We founded CAESAR with the objective to tackle unsolved problems in space borne autonomy through the wise incorporation (合并) of artificial intelligence components,” D’ Amico said.
Though the space foundation model will be a game changer, D’ Amico also noted the restrictions (限制) space imposes on the startup technology. For instance, space is a difficult, far-distance environment that’s not suitable for AI training, and powerful microprocessors needed for AI are still not flexible to space radiation.
12. What are CAESAR systems designed for
A. Clearing up the space junk. B. Navigating planets and asteroids.
C. Raising space-related fund. D. Doing space activities by AI.
13. What is one of CAESAR’s main pursuits according to the text
A. To provide once-and-for-all solutions to space problems.
B. To build a foundation model to help handle different missions.
C. To adopt the off-the-beaten-track incorporation of AI sets.
D. To address potential problems of AI used in space exploration.
14. What is D’ Amico’s attitude towards CAESAR
A. Careful. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Disapproving.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. CAESAR’s Exploration in Asteroids B. CAESAR’s Success in Engineering
C. CAESAR’s Attempt with Space-related AI D. CAESAR’s Restrictions on Robots
