Three Things to Do Before You Are 18
Are you bored with your daily life Here are some things you should try before you are 18.
Learn to swim
Seriously, this is so important that it can save your life. If you can’t swim well, you won’t be able to do water sports like waterskiing, surfing and diving. Even taking a boat trip will be dangerous for you. Make sure you do it.
Collect something
One of the best hobbies for under-18s is collecting things. You could collect kinds of stamps, or you could collect things that make you remember what you have done, like cinema tickets for films you have seen or letters from friends. The best way to collect is to have a special album to put your collection in and to write what each thing means to you. That way you won’t forget.
Try at least one kind of team sports
Being a good team player is an important skill in life. You can’t just think of yourself, but have to work well with other people. Other advantages of team sports like basketball, football and baseball are that they keep you fit and healthy, and they are also great fun. Teams usually have a good social life too—you’ll go to lots of parties and make many friends.
1. The most important reason for learning to swim is that _________.
A. you might feel well B. it can make you healthy
C. you might difficult do lots of things D. it can save your life
2. The writer tells us that one of the best hobbies is to _________.
A. collect something B. do some water sports
C. send letters to your friends D. play basketball with your friends
3. The passage is mainly about _________ before you are 18.
A. good habits to keep B. skills to have
C. things to do D. sports to play
B
Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your choice of sport might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf (高尔夫), as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemical and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often regarded as the major reason of serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sports you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements (代替物) for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.
4. What do we know about golf from the passage
A. It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.
B. It is not played in Portugal and Spain at all.
C. It causes water shortages around the world.
D. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.
5. Why does the author use power walking as an example
A. Because it gets people close to the nature.
B. Because it uses fewer resources.
C. Because it improves our health.
D. Because it is free.
6. Which of the following does the author most probably support
A. Playing golf in the countryside.
B. Working out in a gym.
C. Cycling (骑自行车) around a lake.
D. Swimming in a sports center.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To show us the harm that sports do to people.
B. To discuss the influence of popular sports.
C To introduce different types of environment-friendly sports.
D. To encourage us to go in for green sports.
C
Chinese students always complain that they’re under great pressure and don’t get enough sleep. But they may be surprised to learn that they’re much luckier than their peers in South Korea and Japan, according to a recently published report, conducted by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on the physical and mental health of senior high school students in the three Asian countries.
According to the study among nearly 6,000 high school students in the three countries, Chinese students are the tallest but poorest in physical fitness. Chinese students are on average 168.17cm, compared with 167.61cm for South Korean students and 164.70cm for Japanese students. Chinese students asked for sick leave more than students in other countries. About 72 percent of Korean students never asked for sick and injury leave during high school, compared to 53 percent for Japanese students and 45 percent for Chinese students. Moreover, Chinese students drink alcohol and smoke earlier than Korean and Japanese students. Around 70 percent of Chinese students have drunk alcohol, compared to 50 percent for Korean and Japanese students.
According to the survey, Japanese and South Korean students suffer more pressure than their Chinese peers. Statistics show 16 percent of students in China said they experienced mental pressure often over the past year, while the numbers in Japan and South Korea were 33 percent and 47 percent respectively. Their worries come from “study”, “future after graduation”, “friendships” and “relationship with their parents”. To go with stress, 57.9 percent of Korean students sleep the least, less than six hours a day, compared with 46.6 percent of Japanese students and 30 percent of Chinese students.
More Chinese students were satisfied with their physical appearance, double that of students in the survey from Japan and South Korea. The report said that over half of students in South Korea had tried to lose weight in the past year, while in China the figure was only 22 percent. In measures of self-worth, such as “I think I am valuable” and “I think I am successful”, “I can complete many things”, “I won’t give up to failure,” Chinese students showed greater self-confidence than students in Japan and South Korea.
8. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph
A. Chinese teenagers are tallest, but most unhealthy.
B. Chinese students drink most alcohol and smoke earliest.
C. Japanese students ask for least sick leave.
D. Chinese students ask for sick leave most often.
9. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Chinese students are luckiest, yet most unsuccessful.
B. Chinese students are confident in themselves and luckier.
C. Japanese students are most stressed.
D. South Korean students sleep the least.
10. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to
A. The height. B. The percentage. C. The weight. D. The number.
11. The worries that cause students to be stressed come from the following factors EXCEPT ________.
A. study and career B. physical appearance C. friendships D. family relationship
D
People generally tend to pick out the best-looking fruit and vegetables when shopping for produce, but the Canadian supermarket chain Loblaws is attracting customers with badly-shaped and faulty produce at the price of 30% lower than normal-looking ones.
A trial run (初步试验) of the ugly food line, named “Naturally Imperfect”, began with only apples and tomatoes to choose from. Consumer demand has been so huge that Loblaws is going to introduce more unsightly vegetables and fruit options like onions and mushrooms. The line is available at other stores, including Real Canadian Superstore and Your Independent Grocer.
All the produce that will be sold through Naturally Imperfect would otherwise have been used in juices, sauces, or soups, or have not been harvested at all. The director Dan Branson explained that this program benefited both food producers who would otherwise have to let the abnormal harvest go to waste, and consumers who could buy fresh produce at low prices. And he is right, given how popular the line has become.
“It really went well beyond our expectations,” Branson said. “I think it really spoke of the fact that Canadians are out there really looking for some options.”
Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin deep, but they also recognize that they can get the same flavor and nutritional benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response to the initial (最初的) offering of apples and potatoes showed the opportunity to expand the line and offer more options at a greater price to Canadian families.
“If you grow produce in your backyard, there will be a lot of produce that won’t look as pretty as what you will see in a grocery store,” said Branson. “And nature doesn’t grow everything perfectly. I’d like to think if we put a No Name Naturally Imperfect apple right beside a No. I apple, close our eyes and eat them, there would be no difference.”
12. What is special about Loblaws
A. Normal-looking produce is banned there. B. Imperfect produce is sold at lower prices there.
C. More fruits are offered at lower prices there. D. Only apples and potatoes are sold every day there.
13. What can we know about Branson’s program according to Paragraph 3
A. The program teaches food producers how to grow.
B. The program proves to be a win-win arrangement.
C. The program prevents people from wasting their food.
D. The program enables consumers to eat more fresh produce.
14. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. The ugly food line. B. The food to be wasted. C. The abnormal harvest. D. All the produce.
15. What do Branson’s words in the last paragraph mainly tell us
A. We should eat imperfect apples with our eyes closed.
B. The world is usually full of imperfect things.
C. Imperfect fruits are as tasty and nutritious as perfect ones.
D. The fruits grown by ourselves are more nutritious than those in the store.

Dear Jack,
I am sorry to hear that you’re having trouble adjusting to your high school life. I’m writing to offer you some useful advice.
Firstly, take everything new in Senior High as it is. Don’t be too anxious or it will prevent you enjoying life. Besides, it is known that a well-balanced learning plan matters. Also, you can take part in as many group activities as possible. That will be of benefit to making friends. Apparently more friends will keep you away from loneliness.
I believed you will get used to it soon and I will wait for your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua
