What do you see in the picture on the left It might look like some corns. But in fact, it is the most clear photo of the sun that we’ve ever seen and each of those “kernels(谷粒)”is the size of France.
The photo, as well as many others, was taken by Inouye Solar Telescope(太阳望远镜) in Hawaii, the US. The photos were published this year.
The high quality of the photos was made possibly by a 4-metre-wide mirror inside of the telescope. It’s the world’s largest solar telescope mirror. “ It is really the greatest solar telescope mirror. “ It is really the greatest progress in humanity’s ability to study the sun from the ground since Galileo’s time,” said Jeff Kuhn of the University of Hawaii, the US.
The greater quality of the pictures will allow scientists to study the sun more deeply and discover more of its mysteries. For example, scientists can more correctly predict what we call “space weather”. The movement of plasma (等离子体)on the sun’s surface can change the sun’s magnetic (磁场)field. When this happens, a “solar storm” can break out. These storms are harmful to power grids (电网) on the earth and satellites. By predicting solar storms more correctly, we can take steps to protect ourselves from them.
( ) 1. What do you know about the photo
A. It’s the most recent picture of the sun. B. It was taken earlier last year in Hawaii.
C. It’s the same size as the country France. D. It’s the clearest photo of the sun ever taken.
( ) 2. The underlined word “this” refers to__________.
A. the terrible solar storm in space B. the changing of the sun’s magnetic field
C. the harm to power grids on the earth D. the correct prediction of “space weather”
( ) 3. What is the picture used to do according to the passage
A. To help change the sun’s magnetic field quickly.
B. To help study the mirror inside of the telescope.
C. To help predict the weather on the earth correctly.
D. To help scientists discover more mysteries of the sun.

Three young ladies were receiving trainings to be qualified detectives by a policeman. To test their skills in recognizing (认出) a suspect, the policeman showed the first lady a picture for five seconds and then asked how she could recognize him. He showed the second lady the picture for five seconds and asked her how she would recognize him. The second girl smiled, flipped her hair, and said, “Ha! It’s easy to find the one-eared person!” Her answer also made the policeman angry. Turning to the third lady, he asked, “How would you recognize him ” He added quickly, “Think hard before giving a silly answer.” The third lady looked at the picture carefully for a moment and said, “HMMMM… he is wearing contact lenses (隐形眼镜).” The policeman was surprised and speechless, because he really didn’t know himself if the man wore contacts or not. “Well, that is a good answer. Wait here for a few minutes while I check his file. He left the room and went to his office, checked the suspect’s file in his computer and returned with a bright smile. “Wow! I can’t believe it… it’s TRUE! The man does in fact wear contact lenses. Good work! How were you able to make such a wise observation (观察) ” “That’s easy,” the girl replied, “He can’t wear glasses because he only has one eye and one ear!”

Many years ago, when I was working as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Lisa. The poor little girl had a very serious disease and was dying. The doctor had done his best but no medicine really worked. The only chance to save her seemed to be a blood transfusion(输血) from her five-year-old brother. The little boy had the same disease before and had developed the antibodies(抗体) to fight the illness.
The doctor talked to the little boy about what they planned to do, and asked him if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate(迟疑) for a moment. He took a deep breath and said, “Yes, I’ll do it if it can save Lisa.”
As the transfusion was going on, the little boy lay quietly in bed next to his sister. He looked at her and smiled all the time. When everything was done and the colour returned to his sister’s face, his smile disappeared and he looked a little afraid. He looked up at the doctor and asked, “ Will I start to die now ”

Paying for bus rides with plastic usually makes people think of plastic bus cards. But one Indonesian city has decided to accept plastic recyclable waste in place of money for city buses.
Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city. located on the eastern end of the country’s main island Java, made: this decision in April 2018. Now, locals can pay for their bus rides by putting plastic cups or bottles directly on the bus. A two-hour bus ride costs 10 plastic cups or 5 bottles.
Indonesia is the second largest ocean plastic polluter, producing up to 2.4 million tons of plastic waste into the oceans every year according to a report. Only in Surabaya nearly 400 tons of plastic waste is produced every day. The head of Surabaya’s transportation department (交通部门) said, “With this decision, we hope to raise public awareness about environment, especially people’s awareness about plastic waste.”
Each city bus can collect up to 550 pounds of plastic bottles and cups every day The collected bottles are sold to recycling companies and the money earned from it goes toward running the bus companies and providing money for green spaces in the city. This is certainly turning rubbish into a national treasure.
The decision is part of the city s purpose to become plastic waste-free by 2020. In order to encourage local people to take buses, the city also added the new Suroboyo buses. The new buses are air-conditioned, comfortable and easy for elderly and disabled passengers to get on and off.
The program is well received. People in Surabaya said, “We can reduce waste so it doesn’t pile up at home because we can just bring it in and make good use of it. It is a win-win situation.”
This type of program can be a model for other cities worldwide and encourage citizens to recycle their plastic waste.
