①Have you ever heard that groundhogs can predict (预测) the end of winter How about that elephants never forget things Or that dogs can smell the strange That may not be 100% true. However, many animals do have stronger senses than humans.
②Do animals have a sixth sense that can tell the future That may sound out of this world. However, many events seem to support this idea.
③Thousands of years ago, a big earthquake hit Helike, Greece. Buildings came down. Many people were hurt. But there was something amazing. The city’s animals acted strangely days before the earthquake. Rats and snakes ran from the city in groups. Did they know an earthquake was coming In 1975, one million people had to leave their hometown, Haicheng, Liaoning Province with the help of Chinese government. Why They believed a disaster was coming. They thought this, in part, because of animals’ strange behaviours. Just days later, a large earthquake hit the city. Experts (专家) said 150,000 could have lost their lives if people stayed in the city at that time. In December 2004, the animals of Sri Lanka were acting strange. Elephants ran around. Dogs wouldn’t go outside. Zoo animals wouldn’t leave their home. Soon after people saw these strange behaviours, a tsunami (海啸) hit the island.

Bees are known to find places before it rains. Dairy farmers say they can tell a big storm is coming when their cows lie down. Cats and dogs are also said to know when a storm is on its way, as are birds and turtles. Can animals really tell the future
⑤Experts say it’s unlikely (不可能的) that animals can tell the future. However, they might hear or feel the earthquake before people do. Even though scientists have not proved animals have the ability to predict disasters before they happen and animals’ predictions aren’t always right, it’s not bad to pay attention to the animals.

How do earthquakes happen
Two strong earthquakes took place in Turkey and Syria on Feb 6. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the biggest earthquake had a magnitude (震级) of 7.8. It was the strongest earthquake in that area in over 80 years. Usually, scientists use 1 to 10 to say how strong an earthquake is. Do you know how an earthquake happens
As we all know, the Earth’s surface (表面) has many plates (板块). These plates are always moving. When two plates move past each other, the rocks begin to push against each other. After a while, the rocks break because of all the pressure that’s built up. When the rocks break, there is an earthquake.
Earthquakes can happen from near Earth’s surface to the depth (深度) of about 700 kilometers. The shallower (浅的) the quake is, the stronger it is. During the quake in Turkey and Syria, the depth (深度) was about 18 kilometers. This is very close to the surface. That’s why it caused big damage (破坏). There are about 20 active plates on Earth. They move and cause earthquakes. Most earthquakes happen on the plate boundaries. About 96 percent of Turkey’s land lies on the plate boundaries. That’s why the country has earthquakes very often. From 1900 to 2020, it had more than 10 earthquakes stronger than magnitude 7.0. In order to keep safe, when people build houses, they had better not build them on the plate boundaries.
How do earthquakes happen

④Animals seem to be pretty good at predicting (预测) disasters. But it doesn’t stop there! Some of them even seem to sense small changes in the weather before they happen.

36 Two strong earthquakes 37 Turkey and Syria on Feb 6. The biggest earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8, which was the 38 earthquake in that area in over 80 years.
The 39 of the earthquakes When two plates on the Earth’s surface move past one 40 an earthquake happens from near Earth’s surface to about 700 kilometers 41 .
The 42 it is to the surface, the bigger damage the earthquake causes.
Conclusion Turkey has earthquakes very often 43 about 96 percent of Turkey’s land lies on the plate boundaries where most earthquakes happen. From 1900 to 2020, it had 44 10 earthquakes stronger than magnitude 7.0. For people’s 45 , they had better not build houses on the plate boundaries.
