The word “emoji” comes from Japanese, literally meaning “picture character”. Emoji s are small symbols representing ideas, emotions or feelings. When first introduced in Japan in 1999, emojis were limited to 176 simple designs. Now there are more than 3, 000 emojis that expand upon the way in which we communicate.
It seems that emojis have clear advantages over written language. People like them because they add emotional meaning, and are quick and easy to use. With a smiling or sad face added to a message or post, your reader can “see” your facial expression while reading your words. Emojis can also help people express their feelings when they cannot find the appropriate words. For instance, if your friend is moving across the country, you may just send them a string of crying faces to express your sadness over your separation.
The use of emojis has even spread to classical literature. A Shakespeare series for young readers has taken William Shakespeare’s popular plays and replaced some words with textspeak and emojis. The intention of these adaptations is to make the classics more accessible to young readers. Some people, however, believe that these new versions have taken away the heart and soul of Shakespeare’s plays.
As we can see, emojis have a tendency to pop up all over the place. Users of emojis say that they facilitate the way in which we communicate and express ourselves. But this makes others, especially educators, worry that we are losing the ability to communicate properly using the written word, or even the spoken word. Perhaps people will one day choose to communicate in pictures, and forget how to write properly. On that day, emojis will have become a real pictorial “language”. But, for now, maybe it’s best that we just enjoy using them.
4. What is an advantage of emoji according to the text
A. It is convenient to write down. B. It has an emotional touch.
C. It makes message-reading harder. D. It can help repair friendship.
5. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Shakespeare
A. To show the widespread application of emojis. B. To give a brief account of emojis’ functions.
C. To recommend the adaptations of classics. D. To honor the famous English playwriter.
6. What does the underlined part “pop up” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Break B. Lack. C. Appear. D. Die.
7. What is the writer’s attitude towards the current use of emojis
A. Objective. B. Concerned. C. Negative. D. Favorable.

Boston wants to be smarter. The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents’ needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today’s cities liveable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.
Kris Carter rolled out Boston’s smart city program in 2014. It started with an app that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city sorted out those reports and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work.
The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts (警报) came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone-equipped residents was highest. “The complaints from the app didn’t always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs,” explains Carter.
Carter’s group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy (精通技术的) residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get out and walk the city’s 1, 700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition.
Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, says Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents’ lives. Take the sidewalk repair program, walking on the streets was proved a useful, if inefficient way to prioritizo repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers’ mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify side walk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods.
“Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good,” says Carter. “We’re really always looking for whatever mix of approaches best solves the problem. ”
8. How did Kris Carter carry out the smart city program
A. By writing reports on sidewalk locations. B. By processing reports collected from an app.
C. By presenting data on sidewalk usage. D. By comparing data from different databases.
9. What problem did Kris Carter’s team meet when carrying out their program
A. They faced many technical problems. B. They were not supported by residents.
C. They couldn’t serve all residents well. D. They were annoyed by being short-staffed.
10. Which of the following might Kris Carter most agree with
A. Maximizing the benefits of technology. B. Mixing approaches for solving problems.
C. Having greater confidence in the residents. D. Letting tech companies be a leading role.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A smart city: more than just tech B. A city with intelligent facilities
C. Joint-effort in city construction D. The modernization of a city

Japanese scientists have created one of the world’s most unusual spacecraft, the Lignost probe—a tiny satellite made of timber (木材). In experiments carried out on the International Space Station(ISS), it was found particularly stable and resistant to cracking. Now plans are being finalized to launch it on a US rocket this summer.
The timber satellite has been built to see if they can act as environmentally friendly alternatives to the metals from which all satellites are currently constructed.
“All the satellite s reentering the Earth’s atmosphere burn and create harmful particles, which will float in the upper atmosphere for years, ” Takao Doi, a Japanese astronaut and aerospace engineer, warned recently. “Eventually, it will affect the environment of the Earth. ”
To tackle the problem, Kyoto researchers set up a project to evaluate types of wood to determine how well they could withstand (抵抗) the severe conditions of space launch and lengthy flights in orbit round the Earth. The first tests were conducted in laboratories that recreated conditions in space, and wood samples were found to have suffered no measurable changes in mass or signs of decomposition or damage. “Wood’s ability to withstand these conditions astonished us, ” said Koji Murata, head of the project. After these tests, samples were sent to the ISS, where they were subjected to exposure trials for almost a year before being brought back to Earth. Again, they showed little signs of damage, a phenomenon that Murata attributed to the fact that there is neither oxygen in space which could cause wood to burn, nor living creatures to cause it to rot.
“One of the missions of the satellite is to measure the deformation of the wooden structure in space. Wood is durable (耐用的) and stable (稳定的) in one direction but may be easy to have dimensional changes and cracking in the other direction,” he said.
It is expected that the probe will operate in space for at least six months before being allowed to enter the upper atmosphere. If it performs well during its operation in orbit, then the door could be opened for the use of wood as construction material for more satellites.
12. Why is timber used in the spacecraft
A. Timber provides a distinct appearance. B. Timber is cost-effective compared to metals.
C. Timber is an eco-friendly replacement of metals. D. Timber maintains better structural performance.
13. What can be learned from the project in paragraph 4
A. The project aimed at wood’s space-enduring qualities.
B. The project targeted wood’s cost-minimizing potential.
C. The project concentrated on wood’s weight - maintaining aspects.
D. The project examined wood’s creature-withstanding features.
14. What is the disadvantage of timber according to Murata
A. It is subject to dimensional instability.
B. It’s structure is unreliable in space.
C. It changes shape under extreme temperatures.
D. It’s durability is affected by microgravity conditions.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The Lignost probe is expected to last for at least six months in space before reentry.
B. The Lignost probe’s mission is to check how well wood holds up in space.
C. The Lignost probe will help decide if wood can be used to build more satellites in the future.
D. The Lignost probe’s success could lead to using more metal when making satellites.

“What will we be singing for the contest this year ” a student from my high school choir asked eagerly.
I worried about this moment. “I was thinking, ” I said, “maybe we would skip the contest and just work hard on the concerts this year. ”
“NO! ” the kids protested.
“We’ve got to go to the contest! ”
“It’s a tradition! ”
Indeed, award plaques(牌匾) lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies reduced my choir to a mere thirty-two young, inexperienced kids who could sing only a simple melody.
“I’ll have to think about it, ” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks. Quite on the contrary, more determined, they begged and insisted every day. I wasn’t a miracle worker. So I hesitated.
Finally one morning I stepped into class. “Look at the clock! ” I demanded. “We’ve wasted two full minutes because some of you don’t have your music ready. If we are entering the contest. . . ” The rest of my sentence was lost in cheers of delight and applause.
“From now on,” I continued when the noise weakened, “you will find the day’s lesson plan on the board. Make full preparations for each class and follow my instructions absolutely. You will work much harder than you’ve ever worked in any class before. And if one of these rules is broken, we will not go to the contest. ”
To my surprise, the kids remained focused, following the rules strictly. Each morning witnessed their diligence(勤奋): working on sight-reading, learning musical terms, rehearsing, etc.
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready and confident to take on the world! Their eyes, however, widened when 125 students from King School arrived. My kids’ jaws dropped when two private schools came with fifty members each. And finally forty-five members from Milwaukee School of Art showed up.

Then came the turn for my choir. Extremely confident, they mounted on the stage as we rehearsed. “Smile!” I mouthed. I took a deep breath and we began. Having performed masterfully, we finished our three songs, and I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, “YOU DID IT!” What delighted me more was that they fully enjoyed their performance without getting panicked, winning storms of cheers and applause. My heart swelled with pride for this little group as they realized their dream with the same bravery they had shown from day one.
After all the choirs had performed, we waited in our assigned room for the results. Sensing their worries about the group size, I reassured them: it was the performance rather than the size that mattered and most importantly, we enjoyed it. Time ticking, kids waited anxiously. Eventually, there came the news that we got the highest marks of all. All kids were screaming and embracing. Warm tears wetting my cheeks, I stood frozen, staring at the list in disbelief. It was a blessing that I was surrounded by kids who had a dream, who refused to give up, who taught me never to doubt the possibility of success for any student ever again.
