Passage 1
主题词:全球变暖应对 难度:★★★★☆ 建议用时:8 mins
The world's highest ski place, Chacaltaya, was closed after the 18,000 year old glacier melted(冰川融化) in 2009. Many scientists agree that the glaciers around the world could disappear in this century.
As we all know, the reason for this is global warming. It is caused by the greenhouse effect, which happens when certain gas, such as carbon dioxide(CO2) is largely emitted(排放) into the air.
As Earth becomes warmer, glaciers melt quickly, and dark rocks are uncovered. Then these rocks take in more heat, causing the temperature to rise. As a result, the remaining snow on glaciers melts faster.
The effects of global warming will be lasting and often harmful. While the melting of glaciers may flood(淹没) some areas of Earth, in other places, it is making water disappear.
Global warming is a real problem. Solving the problem is not easy. However, we can begin it by lowering the amount of CO2 in our daily lives.
Peter Miller, along with his wife, took part in a scientific test to see how much CO2 they could cut down in a month. The average(平均) U.S. household produces about 80 kilos of CO2, which was more than twice the European average. Their final goal was to make less CO2 than most American families.
First, they found out how much CO2 they were producing. Then they asked a scientist for advice on how to reduce CO2 emissions. A month later, they saved 70% on electricity, 40% on gas, and drove half as much as others. Their daily CO2 emissions at 32 kilos were less than the U.S. average households.
Protecting our planet starts with small things. With a little effort, and not much money, most of us can make a difference.
1. Why was the ski place, Chacaltaya, closed in 2009
A. Because the ski place was too old.
B. Because few tourists came to this place.
C. Because the ski place was too high to reach.
D. Because the 18,000 year old glacier melted.
2. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to(指代)
A. Glacier melting. B. Global warming. C. Carbon dioxide. D. Greenhouse effect.
3. How does the writer show that Peter succeeded in the scientific test
A. By listing numbers. B. By asking questions.
C. By giving explanations. D. By giving suggestions.
4. 2024广东新考法 [跨学科试题] Which of the following can match the information in the passage

Passage 2
主题词:避免鸟类撞击玻璃 难度:★★★★☆ 建议用时:8 mins
Every year, a large number of birds hit the glass in the US, according to the Wild Animals Service. In China, such accidents are common, too.
One key reason for this problem is the glass. During the day, birds fly towards the glass as it reflects the sky and nearby trees creating a misleading view. As night falls, birds fly according to the position of the moon and stars, and the bright light of the glass building might also draw them.
These accidents could be avoided if we use proper ways. A German bird research group learned a skill from a little spider(蜘蛛). When insects hit spider webs, spiders often catch them, while birds do not hit spider webs and always avoid them in time. After research, it was discovered that the spider silk can actually reflect UV(紫外线), while birds can see UV.
Scientists think that if glass is covered with a UV coating(涂层), birds will regard it as “a huge spider web hanging in the sky”, and they will cleverly avoid it. And to humans, this bird visible glass looks no different from regular glass, as human eyes cannot detect UV.
The final test results show that 66% of birds consider the special glass as a wall.“Although it may not be as high as our expected 95% or 100%, it can already save a lot of birds,” said scientists.
Nature seems to have the ability to solve things. In fact, when we deal with accidents of birds by using methods from the spider web, we are trying to use natural ways to protect animals.

Passage 3
外文素材改编自THE WEEK Junior
主题词:“风树”发电 难度:★★★☆☆ 建议用时:7 mins
One day in 2011, the weather was fine. The French engineer, Jerome Michaud Lariviere, was sitting in a park. Then he noticed the leaves on the trees moving. Suddenly, an idea came to his mind: “That's energy. Why not make use of it?”
With this idea, Jerome quickly went back home.He decided to make a tree to produce electricity. At first, many people thought the project was impossible, because they thought it might take a lot of time to finish the design. However, the man didn't give up easily. He organized a team and its members were all engineers. They did some research and tried many methods. After three years of hard work, they finally developed a nearly eight meter tall Wind Tree. It looks like a tree. Its plastic leaves can turn and produce electricity even when there is a little wind. Each year, one Wind Tree can produce nearly 18,000 kWh, which is enough to support a family of four. This could cut the yearly carbon emissions(碳排放) of the family by over 12 tons. Even better, the trees make little noise when they are working. This isn't detrimental to humans or animals, and it's good for the environment.
Jerome also made three different colors of leaves besides the common green, blue and orange in order to meet different people's needs. So far, 130 Wind Trees have been “planted” around the world.
The Wind Tree is a meaningful invention that makes clean energy and helps protect the environment. Jerome said, “We hope Wind Trees can be connected with other methods such as geothermal power(地热发电) and energy saving buildings. In the future, we will develop a perfect Wind Tree system.”

C. The moving leaves. D. The beautiful rivers.
3. Why did many people think Jerome's project was impossible
A. Because nobody tried doing such a thing.
B. Because he wanted to create a perfect job.
C. Because it might be unfriendly to the old.
D. Because the design work might take much time.
4. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Useful. B. Harmful. C. Successful. D. Colorful.
