When I first visi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ted Viareggio years ago, I was a bit confused to see a huge clown statue. It was explained to me that the clown is Burlamacco, the mascot (吉祥物)of the Carnival celebrations held in Viareggio every year.
During the visit to th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e Carnival of Viareggio Foundation that year, I met the people behind the organization of the event, and talked with them about the history of Viareggio’s Carnival and what it means to the people of Viareggio.
The Carnival ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )of Viareggio is one of the most important festivals in Italy and in Europe. It dates back to 1873 when a group of citizens decided to have a masked parade on Fat Tuesday to protest against too many taxes. Year after year the parade continued to grow in size and popularity.
In 1931 Uber ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )to Bonetti designed the clown now named Burlamacco as part of an advertisement for the event. Because of his immediate popularity, the clown quickly became the mascot of Viareggio’s Carnival, and his statue can be found all year on the street. If you visit during Carnival, you’ll see him everywhere. Burlamacco is always a popular costume choice.
Now I’ll tell you s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )omething about the Carnival floats (彩车). The people behind the floats are true artists. They often have elements of social and political commentary (实况报道).The floats are surely amazing, with moving parts, performers, music and even dancers on the ground in front of the float. The best thing about the parade is that there are no barriers! The floats glide through the crowds. You can dance along with the performers, touch the floats, and feel the entire time like part of the show.
You don’t watch thi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s parade — you join it! So put on your costume and fill your pockets with confetti (五彩纸肩).
5. When the autho ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r first visited Viareggio years ago, he / she _______.
A. showed no interest in Burlamacco
B. knew little about Burlamacco

D. bought a mascot of the Carnival celebrations

8. What does the author think is the best thing about the parade

What are the qualiti ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )es of a good journalist Here, s what I have found.
First, a good jour ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nalist should be alert (警觉的). If you’re not, how can you find news You should always stay alert. Only in this way can you find valuable news. Don’t think you can just sit in the office and wait for phone calls about information. It doesn’t work.
Second, you should ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )have an inquiring mind. For example, when something happens, you should think why it happens, what consequences (后果) it will lead to, and so on. Don’t just report what you see. Dig deeper to find more information.
Third, a good j ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ournalist should be quick. It means you should report quickly what you have discovered during your missions. If you report the news too tardily, then it is not news, right
Fourth, as a good j ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ournalist, you should be accurate. I remember that a singer was said to be in a relationship which he was not in a few years ago. The journalist reported it just because of a rumor. Luckily for the singer, he is a very lovable person, and the large audience of that newspaper did not believe what the report said. That happened in his case, but there are many other people who can have their entire careers mined because of some bad rumors. So never report something just based on a rumor.
Also, to be a good jo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )urnalist, you need to be brave and willing to sacrifice. I have to tell you that the life of a journalist is not easy. Let’s say your boss tells you that from the next week, you will go to a war area and stay there to send back valuable information for two months. Would you quit and look for another job I hope not. This is not what we want from our journalists.
9. According to Paragraph 2, a good journalist should _______.
A. wait for phone calls about information
B. go out and look around on the street every day
C. get valuable news from his / her colleagues
D. know it once something worth reporting happens
10. What does the underlined word “tardily” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Fast. B. Late. C. Lazily. D. Boringly.
11. The singer ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )’s story is mentioned to show that a good journalist should _______.
A. be able to find news everywhere
B. be able to Find exciting news
C. report news to entertain the public
D. make sure the report is correct
12. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text
A. You should be willing to take risks.
B. You should ask for more information.
C. You should make the news interesting.
D. You should avoid reporting rumors.
D
Electrical and comp ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uter engineering students Viet Tran and Seth Robertson were looking for an interesting idea for their senior research project. That’s when they came across an experiment done by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in 2012. The experiment was given up after the agency was unable to determine its effectiveness(效率) on a large scale.
Tran and Robertson ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )decided to challenge themselves and see if they could take the research to the next level and build a fire extinguisher that could be used widely. As with any radical (激进的)idea, they faced a lot of doubt even from faculty members, many of whom refused to serve as advisors. After all, neither of the students were chemical engineers, so what could they possibly know about creating a fire extinguisher The students were finally able to persuade Professor Brian Mark to oversee the project and not fail them.
The young engineers ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )first tried to put out the fire by placing a subwoofer (超低重音音响)near a flame created using rubbing alcohol. But they soon realized that “music” is not such a good idea. The next option was exposing the fire to 20,000 to 30,000 hertz frequencies. However, with the high frequencies, the flames only grew stronger. The two succeeded when they reduced the frequency to about 30 to 60 hertz. It turns out that at these low frequencies, the sound takes the oxygen away from the flames. With no fuel to keep them going, the fire dies.
While it can now put o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ut only small alcohol-fueled fires, the students hope to make it work for other flammable (易燃的)chemicals as well. Also, although Tran and Robertson had just expected the handheld extinguisher to be for home or space use, they now believe it could even work for larger fires. A local fire department has already shown interest in testing the extinguisher on a structure fire, in the hope of replacing toxic chemicals with clean sound waves.
13. The experiment ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) mentioned in Paragraph 1 was probably done to_______ .
A. learn how a large fire spreads
B. improve electrical engineering
C. show if sound could put out a fire
D. help students learn chemistry
14. Which of the fo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )llowing could be used to put out an alcohol-fueled fire
A. Music from a subwoofer.
B. 30 to 60 hertz frequencies.
C. 3,000 to 6,000 hertz frequencies.
D. 20,000 to 30,000 hertz frequencies.
15. What would Tran and Robertson probably do next
A. Make toxic chemicals harmless to put out a fire.
B. Find out how to put out a large fire using sound waves.
C. Find out how to put out a home fire using sound waves.
D. Find out if sound waves could put out alcohol-fueled fires.
