I stayed for a while ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in Costa Rica years ago. One morning I was shopping in a local farmers market. I loved that market. The selection of produce was exceptional!
I had parked my car a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) few blocks away at Firestone. An hour into my shopping, I reached in my purse for my phone. I dug around searching and searching... no phone!
I had butterflies in ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )my stomach since the zipper was not zipped on my bag and perhaps my phone fell out or got picked up by wondering hands.
I went around ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) to all the venders (摊主)I had visited asking if they had come across a lost iPhone. But no such luck.
Disappointed, I wal ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ked out of the market with all my fresh organic produce. In front of me was an older lady walking slowly with a heavy bag in each hand. I observed many people passing her. At first I thought of doing the same, as I was worried about my phone. But then I heard a voice in my heart saying “help her”.
In Spanish, I ask ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed the old lady if I could give her a hand. She gladly handed me a bag and we walked on. She was probably in her late 70s and the bag I took from her was full of produce. She asked about my family and my job. My Spanish 'was far from perfect. I tried to explain to her but I was not sure whether she understood.
As we came to a s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )treet comer, we had to walk in opposite directions. My mind wondered for a moment and then I decided to go on helping the lady. I saw a warm smile of gratefulness on her face, which also warmed my own heart.
After a few more block ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s we came to her destination. I couldn’t imagine her walking so far with two heavy bags all alone!
I walked all ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the way back to my car at Firestone. I unlocked my door and sitting between the seats right in view was my iPhone!

Why aren’t we reading poetry Here are two reasons that I often hear.
Reason 1: I’ve never understood it.
Poetry can be diffi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )cult. Learning to read Shakespeare is difficult, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend anyone take on T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland without some guidance. But most poets, poems are not that difficult to understand. Also, it’s important to note that your expectation for a poem should be different from your expectation for a newspaper or a novel. A poem often has many layers of meaning that will unfold over a few readings — and it’s important to give a poem that opportunity. It’s a good idea to read a poem more than once in one sitting or go back and reread it over the course of a few weeks or even a lifetime.
Reason 2: I can’t get past the whole rhyming thing.
Rhyming verse (诗)ca ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n be a little hard on the modem ear, which is why most of today’s poems are written in “free verse”. Rhymes are a part of poetry's music: the rhythms and sounds of words from which a poet draws power. If you’re reading a poem with end rhymes and they’re bothering you, ignore the line breaks and try reading the poem as if it ware prose (散文).
So how should you ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) begin if you want to read poems I’d recommend you start with a collection. You can't go wrong with The Norton Anthology of Poetry, which covers everything from medieval English verse to Bob Dylan. When you find a poet you like, buy a book of his or her works. Volumes of poetry aren’t as frightening as the word “volume” implies. In fact, they’re relatively small. And you can read through most poems in a small amount of time. You should also check here each week, where I’ll be posting a great poem as a blog
5. In the author’s opinion, T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland
A. isn’t such a good poem
B. can be used as guidance
C. isn’t that easy to understand
D. is easier than Shakespeare’s poems
6. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Poems are usually impressive.
B. Poems are different from novels.
C. We should try reading some poems.
D. We should read a poem several times.
7. Most of today’s p ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )oems are written in “free verse” mainly because _______.
A. today’s poets don’t know rhymes well
B. they are easier for readers to understand
C. they make poems sound like music
D. today’s poets consider end rhymes annoying
8. What do we know about The Norton Anthology of Poetry
A. It has works of various poets.
B. It’s a collection of modem poems.
C. It mainly tells life stories of poets.
D. It’s a collection of Bob Dylan1 s poems.

When a dog loses a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) leg, the animal eventually figures out the best way to get around on three legs. In a short time, the dog learns to deal with its physical disability. Now, scientists have developed robots that behave in much the same way.
Nowadays, robots ca ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n be seen everywhere. Robots build cars, play chess and can clean your house. Two robots were even sent to Mars to explore the red planet. Robots may someday drive your car, too.
Jeff Clune, a c ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )omputer scientist with the University of Wyoming, says robots cm also help people in natural disasters. Robots are used in search and rescue operations following an earthquake. They may someday also be used to examine the wreckage (废墟)of a nuclear accident, like the one in Fukushima,Japan.
Mr. Clune says robo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ts can be sent to a lot of unsafe places. “The problem is that all of those types of situations and environments are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. And it is very likely that robots and humans in those situations become damaged.”
He and other scientis ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ts are developing technology so that robots will continue operating after the first sign of injury. They want the machines to have the ability to make changes and continue performing until they can be repaired.
Mr. Clune and ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )researchers in France have added one more operation to the skill set of robots working under difficult conditions. Once the robots become damaged, they use their knowledge of how their body works to find a way to deal with the damage. The robots are programmed with child-like curiosity. In other words, they are always asking questions and looking for answers. The whole process takes about a minute for the robots to find a way to overcome damage. They have now already programmed a robot with six legs and a robotic arm to learn how to deal with injuries.
9. Why is a dog mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To bring in the topic of the text.
B. To prove a dog’s ability to repair itself.
C. To show the similarity between a dog and a robot.
D. To predict what a dog can do in a dangerous situation.
10. What can’t robots do so far according to the text
A. Play chess. B. Clean houses.
C. Drive cars. D. Explore space.
11. What is the problem for robots working in natural disasters
A. They can’t behave in a normal way.
B. They are very likely to be injured.
C. They might perform unpredictably.
D. They take a long time to overcome damage.
12. The robots deal with damage by _______.
A. repairing the injuries by themselves
B. sending signals to their designers for help
C. adding more advanced skills to themselves
D. consulting their own programs to find solutions

The United Nations ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )just put together a deal that should prove a major victory for the world’s threatened forests.
While we all know i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t’s foolish to destroy all of the world’s forests, deforestation (滥砍滥伐) continues to run out of control because developing nations are more interested in the financial gains than the environment.
Clearly, if we want ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )developing nations to preserve their forests, we have to give them financial encouragement to do so. That’s where the U.N. comes in.
Paying developing nati ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ons to stop cutting down forests is part of the U.N.’s goal to end deforestation by the year 2030. This plan has actually been kicking around in the U.N. for about a decade. The reason is that it’s tricky to find a balance between protecting the forests and stripping (剥夺)local people of their land.
Previous attempts ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )at protecting lands have left local communities neither compensation (补偿) nor reasonable source of income. To prevent this, the U.N. wants to work with both government bodies and local communities to reach agreements that satisfy all parties.
The need for forest ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s in the fight against climate change is twofold. Firstly, the act of chopping down trees currently creates 17 percent of the world’s emissions as carbon and other harmful gasses escape from the fallen trees. Secondly, trees naturally help to fight against climate change by taking in carbon. The more trees we leave alive, the slower the effects of carbon change will occur. Altogether, scientists predict that preserving existing forests could reduce 8.8 billion tons of carbon emissions annually.
The U.N. still has o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ne issue to work out before the plan is official: the money. The U.N. could shell out some, but outside private donations will probably be necessary in the long run. However, U.N. officials are confident that — given the forests1 importance to the planet 一 it will find the money necessary to make this plan happen.
13. What is the U.N.’s plan discussed in the text
A. Cutting down on the world’s emissions.
B. Encouraging local people to give up their land.
C. Paying developing nations to stop deforestation.
D. Calling on developing nations to protect their forests.
14. Why do developing nations keep cutting down forests
A. To make more furniture.
B. To make more money.
C. To protect the environment.
D. To make better use of their land.
15. What does the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) underlined word “tricky” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean
A. Easy. B. Impossible.
C. Likely. D. Difficult.
