Clare is a t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hird grader at Hoover Elementary School in Dubuque, Iowa. She often saw somebody outside during a class break, sitting alone and not having any friends to play with. When seeing this scene, she felt bothered, for in her mind everybody in the world needed friends. That was why Clare came up with an idea — “a buddy bench”.
Buddy benches have ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )been tried at other schools. In 2012, a girl named Acacia came up with the idea of the friendship bench with her parents’ help. The students found it was something that was badly needed. Many students went there and found their friends. Other students learnt the importance of social communication with the words, like “hope”,“respect,” “listen” and “dream”,painted on the benches. The friendship bench was also praised by teachers there.
Clare thinks her sc ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hool also needs such benches. So she has been working on raising the money to pay for the benches and talking with school officials about getting them installed. “They are certainly something that I think will be great additions to our school,” said Claret principal, Kathleen. “Clare thinks that everybody needs friends,” said her mom, Tricia. “Moreover, she wants everybody to be her friends. Clare had been inspired by her elder sister who is disabled. “Having seen her sister’s struggles, she understood what other kids felt when they were struggling. Clare didn’t want to see her sister or anybody else struggle.”
As the actor Will ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Rogers said, “A stranger is just a friend I haven’t met yet.” That’s apparently how Clare sees people as well. “I hope that I can have thousands and thousands of friends,” Clare said. “Everybody needs friends.”

Recently, I came acr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )oss an interesting article on the differences between British English and American English. I had a lot of fun reading it and thinking of as many differences as I could as an American.
Their cars have “b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )onnets (发动机罩)”,while ours have “hoods” . They park their cars in a “car park” while we leave ours in a “parking lot”. Our “cookies” are their “biscuits”, while their “rubbers” are our “erasers”.
Then there are the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )food words. Would you want to eat something called “Toad in the Hole” or “Bangers and Mash” or “Spotted Dick”? I’m here to report they are all very tasty. There are American equivalents (相等物),of course. We’ve got “Shoofly Pie' “Chicken Fried Steak” and “Mississippi Mud Pie”. What they call “crisps” is what we call “potato chips” and when we ask for “chips” in England we will get what we know at home in America as “French fries” .
They find it hy ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sterical that we call the “toilet” the “bathroom” and they really double over (弯腰)with laughter when we ask for the “restroom”. American ladies in England who ask for the “little girl’s room” or the “powder room” will be met with blank stares. A “fag” is a “cigarette”, in the UK which can lead to endless confusion for British visitors looking for a cigarette in America. On the other hand, Americans are endlessly confused by English signs put up over doorways saying “Way Out”. We Americans walk on the sidewalk not the pavement. “Pavement” in America is the actual cement (水泥)the sidewalk is made of.
28. What do British people call French fries
A. Chips. B. Crisps.
C. Shoofly Pie. D. Mississippi Mud Pie.
29. The examples gi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ven at the end of the passage mainly show that________.
A. Americans don’t like dealing with the British
B. English signs are very hard for people to understand
C. American English is very different from British English
D. 1 Americans and th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e British may find it hard to under-stand each other
30. What does ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the underlined word “hysterical” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Funny.
B. Difficult.
C. Perfect.
D. Normal.
31. It would be dif ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ficult for British people to look for a cigarette in America because________.
A. American people don, t like giving others a cigarette
B. it is not allowed to smoke in public in America
C. Americans don’t know a “fag” means a “cigarette”
D. American people don’t smoke often

Lakes have run dry, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) lawns have turned brown, and farmers have left land unplanted. The problems are a result of an extreme drought that has taken over nearly 80% of California. It is the state’s worst drought in nearly 40 years. The conditions have led to wildfires and damage to animals’ habitats.
California has had a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) drought for three years. In January of this year, Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency. Residents were told that if it doesn’t rain this winter, conditions in the state could get worse. Some farmers could see their wells run dry next year and communities could run out of drinking water. Yet too many California residents are not heeding the warnings. Water consumption in the state actually rose by 1% in May, according to a report from the board.
Water regulators (管理者) ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )decided on Tuesday to fine California residents up to $500 a day if they are seen wasting water. The fines will apply only to wasteful outdoor water use, such as washing a vehicle with too much water.
The board (委员会)est ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )imates that the new rules about water usage could save .enough water to supply more than 3.5 million people for a year. Cities are free to decide how they will fine residents. Repeat violators (违反者)could face the full $500-a-day fine. Others might receive warnings or smaller fines. The regulations will go into effect in early August. Marcus says the rules will send a message about how serious the situation is. “We are hoping for more voluntary conservation,” she says. “We hope this will get people’s attention.”
California is not t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he only state affected by the drought. States in the southwestern part of the US are seeing problems, too. Lake Mead in Las Vegas, Nevada, has reached its lowest level since the 1930s. Las Vegas depends on Lake Mead for drinking water for its 2 million residents and 40 million tourists each year.
32. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that________.
A. farmers are trying new ways of growing crops due to the drought
B. there are more wildfires than ever in California this year
C. many species of animals are dying out in California
D. California is suffering a very severe drought now
33. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 suggests that________.
A. a lot of people are wasting water
B. the government doesn’t warn people enough
C. the consumption of water reduces month by month
D. the severe situation is fully aware by people
34. If residents in ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )California are seen wasting water, they will________.
A. be fined up to $500 a day

36 Unless you liv ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e a solitary (隐居的)life on top of a mountain, you will need to deal with people. But if you are experiencing relationship problems with many different people in your life, you might need to rethink the kind of people you are allowing into your life. Here are some keys to attracting healthy relationships:
Know who you are. ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )What kind of behavior do you have in relationships 37 Are you perfect Of course not! No one is. So be honest with yourself about what you bring to your relationships. Some is good; some is bad. But be realistic when looking at yourself. Once you are aware of who you are,you can work on your “shortcomings” and bring your best self to every relationship.
38 If some people t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )reat you badly and you don’t stop them, then they will keep doing it. You need to set your boundaries about what kind of behavior you allow in your life from others. If some friends you really like are constantly an hour late whenever you get together, you need to have a talk and tell them that their behavior has a negative effect on you. 39 You can send a message to them about what kind of behavior you will and will not allow in your life.
Having healthy ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) relationships starts with you. 40 Even if you always bore their bad behavior in the past, remember that you have the power to change it.
A. Teach people how to treat you.
B. We all have relationship problems.
C. Be aware of how you feel in other people’s company.
D. If they frustrate and exhaust you, don’t put up with it.
E. What every ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )one should want is to be treated with kindness and respect.
