Robert Winston stepped outside a convenience store with his morning coffee and spotted a homeless man, Paul Krupa, sitting with his back against the building. A small dog sat in his lap. Winston, a vet (兽医) at an animal hospital, noticed its injured fur and skin. He approached the man and offered to bring medication for the dog’s skin, a gift the man readily accepted.
“I remember returning a week later, and the hair was coming back and the rash (皮疹) was gone,” Winston told the Modesto Bee. Paul said his dog was finally sleeping at night again because it was no longer feeling restless for its illness. “‘And you know,’ he said, ‘I’m sleeping at night.’ He started to cry, and that got me touched too,” Winston says.
Winston was addicted. “When you do good deeds, there is something you get in return that feels much larger. I knew I wanted to keep doing it,” he told .
Today, Winston, 50, has his own practice in town, yet he still finds time for street pets. He’s helped roughly 400 animals since 2011.
There’s a great need for his kind of help. About 25 percent of Modesto’s homeless population owns a pet, but there are few healthcare options available to them. To fill that gap, Winston can often be found wandering dark streets and underpasses (地下通道), anywhere he thinks the homeless might be camped out. Winston pays for almost all of it out of his own pocket. For those expensive procedures, he set up a GoFundMe account to help cover treatment costs. “I don’t ever want to have to turn anybody away,” he explains.
“To have somebody like Dr. Winston come out here to take care of my dog just because it’s the right thing to do, that’s huge.” Joe, one of the dog owners, said in a video that Winston posted on the GoFundMe page.

For many, travel isn’t just about the destination — it’s about making the most of the journey. However, for a lot of people, the journey is often ruined by an uncomfortable experience often accompanied by vomiting, known as motion sickness. If you’ve ever felt the unwelcome urge to vomit while reading or using your device in a moving vehicle, you’re not alone. Recognizing this common issue, Apple has stepped up to offer a revolutionary solution; the Vehicle Motion Cues feature for iPhones and iPads.
Motion sickness occurs when there is a disconnect between what your eyes see and what your body feels. When you’re in a moving vehicle, your body senses motion through its vestibular system (the inner ear), but if your eyes are focused on a still screen that doesn’t reflect this movement, the brain receives mixed signals. This sensory conflict can lead to dizziness, nausea, and overall discomfort - symptoms all too familiar to motion sickness sufferers.
Apple’s new Vehicle Motion Cues feature is designed to bridge this gap and bring relief to those likely to experience motion sickness. This revolutionary feature works by displaying animated dots around the edges of your screen, which move at the same time and speed as the motion of your vehicle. These moving cues help keep the motion your body feels in line with what your eyes see, effectively reducing the sensory mismatch that causes motion sickness.
The magic lies in the simplicity and effectiveness. The animated dots move in consistency with the vehicle’s motion providing a visual representation of the movement your body is experiencing. By matching the visual input with the physical sensations of motion, your brain is less likely to experience the confusion that leads to sickness.
Early reports and user feedback indicate that Vehicle Motion Cues is receiving high praise for its effectiveness. So next time you embark on a journey, whether short or long, remember that Apple’s got your back — or rather, your brain - helping you make the most of every mile with ease and comfort.

While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors - drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often warn parents and teachers that serious problems are arising, a new study finds that there is another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms (精神症状).
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient (不充足的) sleep and have a sedentary (不爱活动的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like every teenager on the earth. But the study warns that it is teenagers who participate in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.”
Carli says that one of the most important things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.
9. Which teenager probably doesn’t belong to the “invisible group”
A. A teenager who often smokes. B. A teenager who dislikes taking exercise.
C. A teenager who has an addiction to media. D. A teenager who lacks sleep.

A. It interviewed students and analyzed risk behaviors.
B. It was designed to find out the reasons for depression.
C. It showed how the invisible group suffering depression.
D. Its findings were beyond expectation of the research team.
11. What is Carli’s attitude toward the findings
A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
12. What is probably the meaning of the underlined word in the last paragraph
A. destroyed B. completely developed
C. moved by a current of air D. potential
