A significant milestone resulting from a change of life circumstances began with Kayee in our life. My children and I were experiencing a difficult period. The only solution I had to meet the great sadness it created, was to bring in a new member to our family.
Kaylee was high-spirited and challenging in so many ways. As I tried to break Kaylee in and teach her the way, as a new family member, I was unsuccessful at every turn. Instead, she broke me and brought me to a place of patience and understanding. Walking as much as we did, proved to be a catalyst (催化剂) for changes in my life physically and emotionally. Kaylee and I spent hours walking off leash (链条) in the woods and in the fields, everyday, every chance we got. So many times Kaylee ran so far and so fast that it frightened me thinking she would not come back.
That all changed 6 years into Kaylee’s life. She and I were at The Cove in Stamford. Without any warning, a storm rolled in quickly and with great force. The high winds and pounding rain made it impossible to see anything in front of me. I screamed repeatedly for Kaylee. I was afraid that this was the moment I was going to lose her. Out of nowhere, a guy heard me yelling for Kaylee and ran to me to tell me a dog was in the parking lot standing beside a car. I rushed out and found Kaylee standing by the car faithfully waiting for me to get her. This is a moment in time I will never forget because I then realized that a dog and a human are capable of sharing a very strong love and bond. From that moment on, she never left my side, no matter where or how long we walked.
24. Why did the author bring Kaylee home
A. To help get through the hard time.
B. To bring about some changes in life.
C. To maintain the strong family bonds.
D. To develop patience and understanding.
25. What do we know about Kaylee in paragraph 2
A. Kaylee ran too far to go back.
B Kaylee lacked the energy to run.
C. Kaylee preferred running to walking.
D. Kaylee enjoyed the freedom to explore.
26. What did Kaylee do when the storm came
A. She was barking to get attention.
B. She was doing nothing but fearing.
C. She was waiting by her owner’s car.
D. She was running in the wind and rain.
27. What does the author think of Kaylee after the storm
A. She is mentally strong. B. She is a reliable companion.
C. She is often out of control. D. She is distinct from other dogs.

In the decades following the beginning of the Green Revolution, agricultural food production has increased dramatically. Unfortunately, there are disadvantages to the farming methods and technologies that allow for this increase.
One problematic feature of industrial agriculture is land use: half of the habitable land on Earth is currently used for farming. Land that used to be home to biodiverse ecosystems has been cleared for agricultural use, and many commercial farms use monoculture farming (单一种植). Though monoculture farms produce more crops like wheat and corn, they are more likely to be affected by disease and use up nutrients in the soil.
Another issue with industrial farming is the overuse of fertilizers, particularly fertilizers that use nutrients like nitrogen (氮) and phosphorus (磷). Crops only use a part of the nitrogen and phosphorus applied to them, with the rest contributing to runoff that pollutes the surrounding ecosystem. This nutrient pollution creates “dead zones” through a process called eutrophication (富营养化) : Algae are plants that consume nitrogen and phosphorus, leading to algal blooms (大量繁殖) . When some algae die off due to overgrowth, the bacteria that break down the dead algae will use up the water’s oxygen supply, starving fish and other organisms of oxygen.
In order to solve the problems while meeting the nutritional needs of a growing global population, the agricultural sector needs to shift its focus from industrial agriculture to permaculture, a way of growing food that copies how nature works, with lots of different plants and animals living together. This helps to make sure we get the most food possible while keeping the environment healthy. By protecting the land, water, and air, people may yet find solutions for the problems of industrial agriculture.
28. What is a consequence of monoculture farming
A. It leads to the reduction of soil nutrients. B. It lowers the output of wheat and corn.
C. It brings benefits to the local ecosystem. D. It makes farms more resistant to diseases.
29. What does the underlined word “runoff” refer to in paragraph 3
A. Half of the nutrients and water. B. Water flowing over the ground.
C. Nutrients and water for fertilization. D. The nutrients absorbed by plants.
30. Why does the author mention algae
A. To compare nitrogen with phosphorus.
B. To illustrate how eutrophication works.
C. To show eutrophication’s impact on fish.
D. To explain why algae die during eutrophication.
31. What is the suggested alternative to industrial farming
A. A complete stop of industrial farming.
B. A shift towards applying more nutrients.
C. A return to pre-Green Revolution farming.
D. A focus on natural-ecosystem-like farming.
D
Americans believe volunteering to help strangers contributes more to society than unpaid caregiving for family or friends, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
Using a series of experiments and data from a longitudinal survey, the researchers examined the differences between different socioeconomic groups and how they perceive their contributions to society.
In the early stage of the research, the researchers found that people with higher socioeconomic status volunteered more and perceive their contributions as great. In contrast, those with lower socioeconomic status, despite spending more time on unpaid care, felt they contributed less to society. “The belief that helping strangers is the gold standard of contributing seems to be a widely accepted but little recognized assumption. Our research brings this assumption to the surface and questions who it benefits and who it overlooks,” Reinhart said.
In a subsequent experiment, participants are asked to read about three people who tutored (辅导) a younger student. One person was required to tutor a younger student in an after-school program, one person chose to tutor a younger student, and one person tutored their younger cousin.
The researchers found that Americans, regardless of socioeconomic status, thought that tutoring strangers made a greater contribution and deserved more recognition than the other tutors. Though people thought tutoring a family member was more moral, they did not think tutoring a family member made a significantly greater contribution to society.
These findings suggest that, as a society, we need a broader idea of what counts as a meaningful contribution, according to Reinhart.
“As the U.S. population ages, the 20% of Americans caring for an adult, most often a relative, will only increase in the coming years. To meet the growing demand for caregiving, we must value this vital labor,” Reinhart said. “We need to do more to recognize the personal and societal importance of helping people close to home in our everyday circles and investing in these local relationships. Caregiving, perhaps especially when unpaid and with little choice involved, is still a significant contribution.
32. What does the research focus on
A. The importance of volunteering. B. The economic value of caregiving.
C. The impact of socioeconomic status. D. The perception of contributions to society.
33. Which type of tutoring can get the highest recognition according to this experiment
A. Tutoring a younger cousin.
B. Tutoring a student for payment.
C. Tutoring a kid at a Children’s Home.
D. Tutoring a specific person in the experiment.
34. What we can infer from paragraph 6
A. Volunteering is the most meaningful activity.
B. People hold broad views on societal contribution.
C. The perception of caregiving needs to be reshaped.
D. Society counts on meaningful contributions from its citizens.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Unpaid Caregiving is Undervalued by Society
B. Americans’ Perception of Societal Contributions
C. The Demands of Aging Population on Caregiving
D. The Impact of Socioeconomic Status on Volunteering

Ted pressed his nose against the store window that stood between him and a metallic-blue 21-speed racer. “Look at that bike, Sam! I want that bike!”
“Get away from there before Mr. Huan makes you clean the drool (口水) from his store window!” His friend Sam laughed and pulled Ted away.
“Well, my birthday’s tomorrow, and I’ve been dropping a lot of hints at home, like the ads and pictures of the bike. I’ve just got to have it so I can go anywhere I want!”
“Your dad’s out of work,” Sam said quietly, “and I bet that bike’s awfully expensive. But don’ t be sad, you can ride my bike around the lake if you want.”
Ted didn’t answer. “Yeah,” he thought, “but you only turn 13 once. Mom and Dad always promised me something special when I became a teenager.” He jumped on a hydrant (消防栓) and balanced a moment before jumping down again.“He’ll find a job soon.”
When he got home, his parents were in the kitchen talking. Ted hugged them and went to the living room. Flopping down on the couch, he dug between the cushions for the remote. As he flipped through TV stations, he caught snatches (片段) of his parents’conversation. There were words like “overqualified” and “mortgage” and something about unemployment checks. Ted felt upset and turned the volume higher.
The next morning, Ted’s father woke him. “Hey, Son, Mom had to go to work early, so I’ll be making your birthday breakfast. Do you want anything special Maybe something with wheels ” Ted was suddenly wide awake. He threw back the covers and bounded (蹦着跑) into the kitchen. There, wrapped in newspaper and tied with a crooked bow, was a bicycle-shaped package.
“Dad!” Ted tore through the newspaper and then suddenly stopped and stared. There stood not the shiny racing bike but a secondhand 10-speed. The chrome had been shined up, and the frame was freshly painted, but it was not new.
