Beautiful Guatemala is a land rich in diversity and cultural heritage. Whether you hope to summit a volcano, hike through the jungle or explore ancient ruins, Guatemala will not disappoint.
Tikal National Park
Tikal National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous places in Guatemala. Tikal covers an estimated 46 miles (around 74 km) and is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in Central America. It is here, centuries ago, that the ancient Mayan civilisation boomed.
Chichicastenango

Brightly graffitied (涂鸦) walls line the busy streets in Guatemala City where you’ll find trendy stores, relaxing bars, and diverse art galleries. Make sure to check out La Esquina, an indoor food market with some of the best food stalls in the city. The Museo Popol Vuh is a leading museum in the world of Mayan art. Here you will be able to spend a couple of hours appreciating the incredible and comprehensive collection of Mayan as well as colonial art.
Acatenango Volcano
Volcano Acatenango towers almost 4,000 metres above the surrounding landscape just outside Antigua. The hike to the summit of this volcano is one of the toughest, yet most popular, in Guatemala. I’ve worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer since I graduated from high school, but making the transition between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be uncivilized, getting to a factory by 6o’clock each morning is torture. My friends never seem to understand why I’m so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There’re few people as self-confident as a college student who had never been out in the real world. People my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like downsizing and overseas relocation (迁移) had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other opinions have become only too clear. When I’m back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy rewrites seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陈腐的) now ring true.
These lessons I’m learning, however valuable, are always mixed with a sense of guilt. Many people pass their lives in the places I briefly work, spending 30 years where I spend only two months at a time. “This job pays well, but it’s hell on the body,” said one co-worker. “Study hard and keep reading,” she added.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.
4. What does the author think of his summer days while at college
A. They brought him nothing but torture.
B. They were no holiday for him at all.
C. They were a relief from his hard work at school.
D. They offered him a chance to know more people.
5. What does the author say about college students
A. They expect too much from the real world. B. They have much interest in white-collar life.
C. They are not confident of their future. D. They think too highly of themselves.
6. In what important way has the author’s work experience changed him
A. He learned to be more practical. B. He came to respect blue-collar workers.
C. He came to appreciate his college education. D. He got a sense of guilt for his social practice.
7. Why does the author feel somewhat guilty
A. He has not done much to help his co-workers at the factory.
B. He looks down upon the mechanical work at the working place.
C. He has stayed at school just for the purpose of escaping from the real world.
D. He realizes there is a great divide between his life and that of blue-collar workers.
C
When you see someone take that first sip of freshly made milk tea, their faces look like pure joy. Across the world, customers flock to their favorite spots to meet with friends and savor sips of these tasty drinks.
In the early 2000s, though, milk tea was just coming on the scene. The few brands that earned a foothold in the industry were concerned: Would milk tea just be another fad (一时风尚) food And with so much new excitement for this product, would people be able to distinguish milk tea companies These were the questions that Serenitea, a Manila- based milk-tea company, faced in2014. While successfully opening 60 stores, they found themselves in a strategic fog.
Unsure of what consumers truly felt towards the drink, they offered as many flavors as possible. They also had no clear definition of how they were distinct — their brand promise, product line, and product packaging all seemed nearly identical to their competitors. How could they define themselves, in a way that would deeply resonate
Like Airbnb Serenitea partnered with an agency, CIA Bootleg Manila, which specializes in drilling down to the deep consumer “why”. The agency conducted a series of psychological-based market research. Specifically, they probed the consumer’s deeper, emotional connections to milk tea, including their earliest childhood memories of milk and tea. Their research revealed that milk tea triggered three consistent psychological responses.
People connected to milk through the concept of nurturing; they fondly remembered their childhood and being cared for by their mothers. Next, consumers connected tea to its healing properties; respondents would recall receiving tea when they had indigestion problems or seeing their parents drinking herbal tea for health reasons. Lastly, they associated milk tea itself with teenage fun: a guilty pleasure of their youth. They had uncovered the three psychological cornerstones of the milk tea experience: nurturing, healing, and teenage fun. This set of insights was crucial. By including them into the core of their brand strategy, they charted an entirely new path.
8. What do the underlined words “earned a foothold” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Made an adjustment. B. Won a position.
C. Lost the initiative. D. Achieved a breakthrough.
9. What was Serenitea’s main concern in 2014
A. Being confused with other brands. B. The rapid growth of milk tea brands.
C. The possibility of milk tea catching on. D. Falling behind the changing consumer tastes.
10. What did CIA Bootleg Manila specialize in
A. Product packaging design. B. Market expansion strategies.
C. Analysis of customer psychology. D. Flavor innovation and development.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. A New Path to Business Success B. Three Cornerstones of Milk Tea

Elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth, and understanding them better could lead to big scientific breakthroughs in science. Both delicate and study, elephant trunks (象鼻) can grasp a single leaf but can also carry nearly 600 pounds. Scientists think that they are an incredible inspiration for the next generation of bio-inspired (仿生) robots.
By conducting a high- resolution motion capture analysis of elephants’ trunks, researchers found elephants have a set of simple movements that they can integrate freely to handle objects of various shapes and sizes. For example, elephants use suction (吸力) to pick up lightweight objects. However, to pick up heavier things, they use suction to secure the position of the objects and trunk wrapping to hold and lift things. “It’s not the whole trunk that is lengthening or shortening — it’s different parts, relying on what the elephant is doing,” said Milinkovitch, professor of the physics of biology at the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
Researchers also performed CT scans and MRIs on the trunk of a dead elephant. They used high- resolution cameras to create a 3D model of a trunk, allowing them to better understand the structure of an elephant’s muscle groups, skin and connective tissues. The study data will be used to help design an innovative“ soft” robotic arm.“ The data is exceptional, but now the effort is to translate this biological data into some engineering specifications,” Milinkovitch said. “We need to extract some simplifying principles that can make the robot’s behavior simple enough to be effective and adaptable to changes.”
The project is also fueling advancements in material science, as researchers have developed a new material similar to the useful properties of elephant skin and can be 3D printed for robotic prototypes (原型). The new materials may be commercialized for a wide range of uses.
12. What does the underlined word “study” in paragraph l probably mean
A. Strong. B. Broad. C. Sensitive. D. Rough
13. How does an elephant handle different objects
A. By securing the position of these objects at first.
B. By combining suction with trunk movements flexibly.
C. By sucking them with all the strength.
D. By stretching its trunk based on things’ sizes.
14. Why do researchers translate the biological data
A. To test the safety of the robotic arm. B. To upgrade the appearance of the robot.
C. To improve the behavior of the robot. D. To study the structure of muscle tissues.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Elephant Trunks: The Theory of Movement in Robotics
B. Elephant Trunks: The Inspiration for Soft Robotics
C. “Soft” Robotic Arms: An Innovation in 3D- printed Robots
D. “Soft” Robotic Arms: A Major Breakthrough in Material Science

It was a cold November day. I sat on the bus headed to Los Angeles waiting for it to set off while other passengers piled on. An old woman with straggly (散乱的) grey hair and a weathered (饱经风霜的) face sat behind me. She wore a ragged blue and white shirt with faded brown trousers. Her shoes were worn.
Then a blond-haired girl, about sixteen years old, took the seat in front of me. The bus driver followed behind and demanded her fare. “I paid already. Yesterday, online,” the girl insisted. “No, no record of it!” the bus driver pointed to the paper in his hand and waved it in her face. “See. No pay! You pay, or you must get off.” He angrily pointed to the exit door. “But I don’t have money left. Please! ” The girl pleaded, on verge of tears.
The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. About a minute later, he cut the call. “No, you have not paid. You must pay!” He roared. “But please, I don’t have any money on me. I must get to LA today. Please!” The girl begged, tears streaming down her face.
For days I had been very excited about going on a tour of LA. My dream of visiting Disneyland was about to come true. But while I sat there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next adventure, this young girl was in tears, with a man standing over her, demanding money harshly.
I wasn’t sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth It wouldn’t be the first time someone had extracted money by telling a sad story that turned out untrue. Maybe the bus driver would show some compassion and allow her to sort the payment out later But no, the bus driver continued to demand she pay $40 or get off. It seemed the driver would throw her off the bus.

Be Smart Pad Users at School
It is my honor to speak on “Be Smart Pad Users at School”. Pads offer many advantages, such as easy access to vast information and interactive learning tools that enhance our educational experience. However, excessive use can lead to distractions and eye strain, impacting our health and study efficiency.
To be smart pad users, we should set specific time limits, take regular breaks, and use pads primarily for academic purposes. By doing so, we can maximize the benefits and minimize the drawbacks of using pads at school.
Thank you.

【答案】范文
Suddenly, the old woman behind me walked straight to the driver, “I’ll pay for her.” Dressed in a ragged shirt and faded trousers, she looked in need herself. She stepped forward and stood directly in front of the driver. Without asking any questions, she didn’t doubt the girl as I had. “This is for her, ” she said, holding out forty dollars and pointing to the girl. Surprised, the bus driver nodded, and took the money. The young girl thanked her for her kind offer.
At the next stop, I approached the old lady, money in hand. I said, “That was a really kind thing you did for that girl. Here, I want to share what you paid.” When I gave her the note, she looked at me with gratitude, saying that was her last forty dollars! When I was shocked by her act of kindness, a couple of others came to surround her with their money. Actually, her forty dollars made a great difference!
