Professor Lum seems to be under the spell of ChatGPT, but let’s not get carried away with the AI chatbot craze. While it does have some benefits, his arguments are like a leaky boat in a stormy sea — full of holes.
According to Professor Lum, ChatGPT offers students a wealth of information. Sure, it’s like having a walking encyclopedia, but learning is not about copying an answer. It’s about the journey of discovery. ChatGPT, armed with its vast database, denies students the opportunity to explore and learn through their own efforts. It’s like awarding a participation medal for a race that hasn’t even begun!
He also claims that ChatGPT improves communication skills. Seriously Chatting with an AI is not the same as having a real conversation. How can we expect students to handle the complexities of the real world if all they know is how to talk to a chatbot Let’s not turn them into socially awkward bots themselves.
Oh, and let’s not forget about critical thinking. Professor Lum thinks ChatGPT challenges students to think critically. But come on, folks! It’s merely a machine! It’s not going to teach them how to question assumptions, analyze evidence, or come up with innovative solutions. We need human interaction and lively debates for that.
Lastly, Professor Lum believes ChatGPT can provide support and guidance. Again, seriously Are we going to replace human emotions with lines of code (代码) ChatGPT might offer some comforting words, but it can’t replace the warmth and understanding that can only be found in human interaction. Let us not abandon our students, leaving them to feel more alone and disconnected than ever before.
Professor Lum’s opinion regarding ChatGPT warns us against too much reliance on technology. Rather than prioritizing ChatGPT, the focus should be on developing critical thinking, promoting genuine human interaction, and emphasizing the core aspects of education.
What is compared to a participation medal in Paragraph 2
A. A walking encyclopedia. B. A journey to explore.
C. A vast database. D. An answer.
25. What can be inferred about ChatGPT from Paragraph 3 to Paragraph 5
A. It is not good at socializing. B. It is a skilled critical thinker.
C. It offers nothing helpful to humans. D. It forms a warm bond with humans.
26. What is the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT
A. Totally negative. B. Fully supportive.
C. Highly skeptical. D. Quite indifferent.
27. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To criticize a viewpoint. B. To question an authority.
C. To clarify two arguments. D. To compare two chatbots.

Whether playing tricks or holding funerals in the wild, crows have surprised the public with their unexpected capabilities. But their “intelligence” knows no bounds. A new study published in Current Biology revealed for the first time that crows can use statistical logic to solve problems.
Crows have a large brain for their size and a particularly noticeable forebrain, associated with statistical and analytical reasoning in humans. “In our lab, crows have shown complicated numerical competence and careful consideration during decision-making,” said Dr. Melissa Johnston, a fellow at the University of Tübingen. In her recent work, Johnston and her team pushed these abilities to a new extreme, testing statistical reasoning.
In the experiment, two crows were first trained to peck (啄) at various images on touchscreens to earn food treats; and gradually they had to choose between two of these images, each corresponding to a different reward probability. “Crows were tasked with learning rather abstract quantities and then applying that combination of information in a reward maximizing way,” Johnston detailed. Over 10 days of training and 5,000 trials, the two crows managed to pick the higher probability of reward, showing their ability to use statistical inference. To researchers’ much surprise, even after a month without training, the crows still perform well every time.
Statistical reasoning involves using limited information about a situation to draw conclusions and make decisions. People unknowingly use such cognitive ability every day. When we select cafes for social meetups, our brains automatically weigh collected statistics from past observations and favor the one more capable of meeting needs. Similarly, crows remembered and analyzed the connections between the images and the reward probabilities to make themselves get the most treats possible.
Crows once symbolized misfortune and death, causing them disliked and even killed by people. Actually, they are among the few animals to adapt to urbanization successfully due to underestimated intelligence. “I think these studies do help change public views and improve our relationship with these lovely animals,” Johnston stated.
28. What makes crows’ intelligence possible
A. Their limitless abilities of tricks. B. Their social leaning in the wild.
C. Their physical structure of brains. D. Their training received in the lab.
29. Which of the following best describes the research process in paragraph 3
A. Instruct, task, and retest. B. Train, perform, and record.
C. Assume, prove, and reflect. D. Prepare, teach, and examine.
30. How does the author explain statistical inference in paragraph 4
A. By sharing a personal experience. B. By quoting a previous study.
C. By making a detailed comparison. D. By using a common example.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Food Prize Competition: Crows Choosing Rewards
B. Urban Bird Survival Strategies: Living with People
C. Beyond Tricks: Surprise of Crows’ Statistical Reasoning
D. Animal Behavior Study: Training Crows in Experiments

Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI-powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. This absorbing new book by Catriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution(变革).
In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code(代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.
As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now—several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.
Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI—the technology companies and world leaders—so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.
32.What does the phrase “In the wrong hands” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. If read by someone poorly educated.
B. If reviewed by someone ill-intentioned.
C. If written by someone less competent.
D. If translated by someone unacademic.
33.What is a feature of AI by Design according to the text
A. It is packed with complex codes.
B. It adopts a down-to-earth writing style.
C. It provides step-by-step instructions.
D. It is intended for AI professionals.
34.What does Campbell urge people to do regarding AI development
A. Observe existing regulations on it.
B. Reconsider expert opinions about it.
C. Make joint efforts to keep it under control.
D. Learn from prior experience to slow it down.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To recommend a book on AI.
B. To give a brief account of AI history.
C. To clarify the definition of AI.
D. To honor an outstanding AI expert.

Overtourism Is For Real: How Can You Help
Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations. 36 Certainly not. The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.
●Choose mindfully. Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they’re special. With so many online posts featuring the same places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out. Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. 37
●Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go somewhere else. Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it’s actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-visited options to choose from. 38 Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination’s lesser-known sights
● 39 Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You’ll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸). Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place. 40 You may be amazed how much closer you’ll feel to the people there.
A. Visit during off-peak times.
B. So, should we stop traveling
C. Travel for you and no one else.
D. Can overtourism be avoided then
E. You can still find relatively undiscovered places.
F. You’ll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.
G. Consider giving back to the communities you’re visiting.

But surely this 50 will also occur to Pete, who will choose 99 too. Continuing with this line of 51 , when both are unwilling to lose money or get less than the other, they will end up writing down the 52 price of the antique. Experimental studies conducted by economists, however, 53 this narrow view of reason. In their studies, most participants pick $100 or a number close to it, either without thinking the problem through or tending to believe they’ll 54 the “unreasonable” number. By doing so, participants ultimately get a much bigger 55 . My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone (长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

Dear Chairman of the Students’ Union,
Informed that the Student Union will collect plans for the coming-of-age ceremony of Senior Three in 2025, I am writing to offer a plan in the hope of contributing to the yearly event.
It is highly recommended that the theme of the activity this year is centred around growth and gratitude, because it is truly important for senior three students to appreciate the efforts and hard work of those around. The highlight for the ceremony is supposed to be students’ reading a letter from their parents, who have striven to contribute to their kids’ healthy growth over the past 18 years. The last activity is for all students to sign autographs, which gives students the opportunity to make a wish and express their future plans. Through these activities, students will realize the significance of growing up and what their parents and teachers expect of them.
I sincerely hope that you can adopt the plan I suggested above and thank you for taking my suggestions into account. Wish the ceremony great success!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
When I brought my payback home---it was $119—my dad wanted to talk to me. My heart sank at the thought of handing my hard-earned money over. Unwilling as I was, I sat down in front of my dad, racking my brain for words to defend what is rightfully mine. As I had expected, my dad asked to see my paycheck, so I handed it to him, which was a bit wrinkled from my clenching. A trace of pride was detected in the faint smile on his face. “I’m glad you’ll be contributing to the household.” “But it’s not fair!” I protested, “I have plans for my own money.” Obviously, my dad didn’t see this coming, but he managed a reply, “Oh, OK..., if that’s what you want.”
I was surprised that my dad allowed me to use the money as I wished. Overjoyed, I gave him a big hug before dashing out of the house for the department store. I was going to splash out every dollar and made the tiring work worthwhile. But as excitement wore off on the way, my dad’s hard-working figure flashed into my mind. Since the age of 14, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to the family. But here I was, thinking of nobody else but myself. Overwhelmed with shame and guilt, I walked home and gave the money to my dad, which I should have done in the first place. I came to realize that a sense of responsibility, instead of the job itself, is a big step of growing up.
