Last summer, I started on a journey of self-discovery, leaving behind the comforts of city life to enjoy being alone in nature. With a backpack filled with necessaries and a heart full of hope, I set off to hike the ancient ways of the nearby mountains.
The first day was a test of strength as I climbed sharp paths under the burning sun. My legs ached, and my lungs burned with every breath. But with each step, I felt a growing sense of achievement. As the sun set below the view, I set up my tent beside a gentle stream, where the cool water comforted my tired body.
Alone with my thoughts, I found myself reflecting on my life’s journey. The challenges I had faced and the victories I had won flashed before my eyes. I realized that, like the mountains, I had peaks(山峰) and valleys—times of struggle and success.
On the third day, I met with a fellow traveler, an elderly man who had hiked these paths for many years. He shared stories of his adventures and offered wisdom that resonated (产生共鸣) with my heart. We walked together for a while, our footsteps mixing with the sound of the wind.
As the journey neared its end, I stood on the highest peak and the world spread out before me. I felt a deeper connection to the universe, a sense of belonging that I had never experienced before. At that moment, I understood that my true self was not just a part of me, but a part of everything around me.
The hike back down was filled with a newfound sense of peace. I returned to my city life with a clearer view of my path and a deeper understanding of who I was. The journey had changed me, and I carried the lessons of the mountains in my heart, a reminder that the exploration for self-discovery is a journey worth taking.

Teaching kids is hard work, but educating them to be environment-friendly is even harder. 8 These small things will influence their whole lives. Here are four things I want to share.
Knowing more about food.
I don’t want my kids to think that food directly appears in supermarkets. 9 So we pick fruits together each summer to make a salad and buy meat from farmers whose farms and animals we’ve visited.
Reducing waste.
My children are told to empty the dustbins whenever they’re full, even in the cold Canadian winter. 10 For example, we usually choose products with less or reusable packages.
Wearing secondhand clothes.
11 These old clothes can not only keep us warm, but also save resources for making new clothes. I get them at specific stores or from my friends whose children are older than mine.
12
Give children more time to spend outside every day, whether it’s playing in the backyard or riding their bikes around town. I believe that kids will protect the environment readily if they have a deep love for the natural world. And the easiest way to develop that is spending time on it.
A. Taking more exercise.
B. Spending time outside.
C. We go to farms and pick fresh vegetables weekly.
D. Nearly everything my kids and I wear is secondhand.
E. They should know where food comes from and how it grows.
F. So they have thought deeply about how to produce less waste.
G. I always try to help them develop environmental habits in daily life.

Dear Mike,
I’m glad to know that you are coming to China during summer vacation. The following is a brief introduction about some places of interest that I strongly recommend.
At first, The Great Wall of China is one of the great wonders in the world, which is visible from outer space. Because of its rich history and magnificent appearance, the Great Wall attracts a lot of tourist, scientist, and historians.Besides, the famous West Lake is like a brilliant pearl embedded in the beautiful and fertile shores of East China Sea near the mouth of the Hangzhou Bay, whose view is simply charming. Different time and different weather make it a different scene.
I’m looking forward to your arrival. There are many other wonderful places here. Wish you a nice journey!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
