这两句为一般过去时被动语态的肯定句。谓语部分为:was或were+及物动词的过去分词。
eg. In ancient times, wood was always used to make fire.
在古代,木头常用来生火。

was taken down 被摧毁(被动语态)
take down表示将建筑物或高的物体“拆除;拆掉;拆卸”,此处根据上下文可翻译成“摧毁;毁掉”。

the rest of意为“剩余的"。the rest of+名词做主语时,谓语动词的数应与of后面的名词的数保持一致。the rest of +不可数名词,be动词用单数 the rest of+可数名词复数形式,be动词用复数。例如:
(1)We eat some of the butter and the rest of it is kept for breakfast.
我们吃了一些黄油,剩下的(黄油)早饭再吃。
(2)Tom is from England and the rest of us are from China.
汤姆来自英国,其余人来自中国。

silence是silent的名词形式,常用短语为in silence沉默;无声。
silent是silence的形容词形式,表示“不说话的;沉默的”( 着重指沉默无语或没有声音,但不一定指没有动作或活动)
表达“安静”或形容天气的“温和”、“平静”、“寂静”时,silent,quiet,可互换。quiet主要表示安静的、寂静的、平静的,文静的。

remember后可接动词的两种形式:
(1) remember doing sth.意为“记得做过某事”,强调事情已经做了。
例如:I remember seeing him once. 我记得见过他一次。
(2) remember to do sth.意为“记得要做某事",强调事情还没有做。
例如:Remember to invite Tom to your birthday party.
记得邀请汤姆参加你的生日聚会。
动词forget与remember的用法一样。例如:
forget doing sth. 忘记做过某事(已做)
forget to do sth. 忘记做某事(还未做)

at first 介词短语, 只起副词作用,在句中用作状语。
与at the beginning同义,表示“起初(但后来……)”,at first主要用于强调前后对照, 暗示接下去的动作与前面的动作不同甚至相反, 因此常有but, afterwards, soon, at last等相呼应。类似词组first of all,与first同义,表示“首先;最重要”,说明顺序,后面常接next, then等。
eg. At first I didn’t want to go, but soon I changed my mind.
起初我并不想去,但我很快就改变了主意。
