When Roger Payne first heard the curious underwater sounds of a humpback whale, he was so moved that he cried.
Payne realized that the whale songs could be used as part of the novel movement to protect the mammals from extinction. In1970 he released Songs of the Humpback Whale, an LP that sold 125,000 copies on first launch and remains the bestselling environmental album of all time. Accompanying the album was a 40-page booklet which impressed the need to conserve the world’s whale populations.
When asked how whale songs should be heard, Payne said, “Attentively. You should listen silently. You should listen with nothing else to distract you. That’s the way to listen.”
His own dream of learning “whaleish”, as he called it, was only half-complete;he believed that such knowledge draws us closer to the animal kingdom. It troubled him that he would not be alive to help in the fight to protect animals on the brink of extinction. “I find myself at 88 years of age,” he wrote in an article for TIME magazine, “very close to the end of a long life, coming to terms with the fact that I will not be around to find out what we learn.”
Payne was always curious, with a childlike delight in the natural world and his interests were wide-ranging. Astronomy, giant clams and cellular biology, to name a few. He was also a practical man who spent many of his waking hours working with machinery in a messy workshop.
“We have learnt that all men are created equal,” said Payne after showing the beauty of whale songs to the world, “but the whales remind us that all species are created equal—that every organism on Earth, whether large or small, has an inalienable right to life.”
24. What impact did Roger Payne’s album Songs of the Humpback Whale have
A. It became the best-selling album of all time.
B. It raised the awareness of whale conservation.
C. It led to a significant increase in humpback whale populations.
D. It featured a 40-page booklet about other marine animals.
25. According to Roger Payne, how should whale songs be listened to
A. By scientifically analyzing the acoustic patterns.
B. While multitasking, such as reading or writing.
C. With background sounds to enhance the experience.
D. Listening intently and without any distractions.
26. What difficulty did Roger Payne have learning “whaleish”
A. He feared that his efforts would be in vain.
B. He worried about the impact of his work on the animal kingdom.
C. He might not live long enough to see the results.
D. He was concerned about the limitations of human understanding.
27. Which words best describe Roger Payne
A. Curious and enthusiastic. B. Practical and generous.
C. Knowledgeable and diverse. D. Compassionate and diligent.

Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July 5,2023, online issue of Neurology@. “Our study found that gum (牙龈) disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage (萎缩) in the hippocampus (海马体), which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer’s disease,” said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, Ph.D. of Hiroshima University in Hiroshima, Japan.
The study involved 172 people without memory problems. Their average age was 67. Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure the volume of their hippocampus at the beginning of the study. This was measured again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the number of teeth and checked for amount of gum disease.
Researchers found that the number of teeth and the amount of gum disease were linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging. By contrast, for people with severe gum disease, the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging.
“These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth,” Yamaguchi said. “The findings suggest that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is crucial, and that teeth with severe gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with appropriate false ones.”
Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. The limitation of the study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan, so the results may not be applied to other locations.
28. What is Yamaguchi’s study mainly about
A. Causes of gum disease.
B. The symptoms of brain shrinkage.
C. Ways to take good care of one’s teeth.
D. The connection between the teeth and the brain.
29. How did researchers reach the conclusion
A. By making comparisons.
B. By referring to previous studies.
C. By conducting a survey among dentists.
D. By proving experts’ theory in experiments.
30. What do the research findings indicate
A. Gum disease is increasing among people.
B. Keeping teeth healthy is of great importance.
C. Removing natural teeth is bad for dental health.
D. Doing a routine dental checkup can avoid gum disease.
31. What is expected of the future studies according to Yamaguchi
A. Exploring treatments for gum disease.
B. Seeking new methods to improve brain health.
C. Involving people from other places in the research.
D. Applying the research to relieve Alzheimer’s disease.

Imagine finding yourself in a spoken word event (also known as performance poetry). You’re attracted by the performer on stage as he conveys his deepest thoughts to the room:
Today I bought you flowers,
How strange meanings can change,
What was once a symbol of joy is now one of pain,
A universal language for when you don’t know what to say.
The crowd is attentive but far from silent. Throughout the performance, you hear clapping and cheers, expressing approval of specific lines. And then the poem ends with thunderous applause and the poet returns to his seat. The performance has ended, but its energy continues to exist throughout the night.
Spoken word events are far from your standard poetry reading. Many people today think of poetry as a silent, individual act but it actually started as an oral (口头的) tradition. Before mass literacy, poems and stories were shared verbally and performed to the public. In modern times, mass media provided audiences with alternative means of entertainment and the art of storytelling declined. The recent and increasing popularity of the spoken word is poetry returning to its oral roots.
The spoken word helps people achieve healing and emotional balance. It shares many benefits with written poetry, including helping us organize our thoughts, process our emotions and promote self-reflection. However, it’s not just the sharing of poetry that is healing. It’s the connections that form between the audience and the poet. This adds to the degree of social connection, which is central to the essence of spoken word poetry. Poets can be themselves in this safe space, where they avoid being judged and laughed at. The feeling of healing also applies to audience members who relate to the poet’s words. Hearing someone who is going through the same feelings or experiences that you are going through or have experienced in the past can make you feel less alone and more connected to others, knowing that the struggles are shared.
The spoken word is an unbelievably accessible art form. There are very few rules, and the form is interpreted fairly broadly. As long as you are performing an original piece which doesn’t include any offensive (冒犯的) content, it will be accepted at a spoken word event.
32. Why is the scene of a performance mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To draw readers’ attention to the spoken word.
B. To call on audience to participate in the event.
C. To inform the content of a spoken word event.
D. To highlight the importance of spoken word poetry.
33. What does the underlined word “verbally” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. In private. B. On stage.
C. In spoken words. D. With enthusiasm.
34. What’s the core of spoken word poetry according to the text
A. The sharing of individual poems among performers.
B. The same feelings and experiences connecting people.
C. The promotion of self-reflection and emotional balance.
D. The extent of relationships between the poets and the audience.
35. What is the best title of the passage
A. Reading Aloud in Public B. More Than Poetry Reading
C. A New Kind of Spoken Events D. The Popularity of the Spoken Word

Once upon a time in the bustling city of New York, there lived a young woman named Emily. Emily was a bright, ambitious woman with a promising career and a loving family. However, she had one major phobia (恐惧症) that held her back—the fear of public speaking.
As a child, Emily had been the center of attention in her classroom. Her teachers loved her for her intelligence and her ability to fascinate her audience with her stories. But when it came to presenting in front of larger groups, Emily would break into a cold sweat and stammer (口吃,结结巴巴地说) out her words. This phobia had started to take a toll on her confidence and professional growth.
One day, Emily received an invitation to speak at a prestigious (有声望的) event hosted by a global marketing firm. This was a golden opportunity for her to prove herself and advance her career. But the thought of standing in front of dozens of professionals and delivering a speech made her heart race faster.
Emily consulted her best friend Sarah, who was a successful entrepreneur (企业家) and a public speaking expert. Sarah listened patiently and shared some valuable insights, “The first step to overcoming any fear is to face it head-on. Public speaking can be nerve-wracking (伤脑筋的), but remember, everyone feels that way at some point. The key is to prepare well and believe in yourself.”
With Sarah’s advice, Emily decided to practice her speech daily and sought the guidance of professional public speakers. She attended workshops, watched videos, and even hired a coach to help her build confidence and improve her delivery.

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I'd phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It's quite a new club— we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I'm British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I'm looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I'll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

(Text 10)
W: Hey, friends! I've missed you. Let me tell you about my trip to Mexico this summer. It was the first time that I had left the United States and traveled to a foreign country. I learned useful traveling tips and had an exciting time in a different culture. The first and most important thing I learned was to make sure to apply for a passport months in advance. I got mine right before I was scheduled to leave, because I waited until the last minute! Secondly, if you are flying, be sure to book a plane ticket far ahead of time so you can get a fair price. Thirdly, my another travel tip is to be sure you pack lightly. You will be taking that luggage around with you everywhere, and it gets heavy quickly! Last but not least, I had some great times exploring the local culture. I was trying all the new kinds of food and went to special cultural events, like special dance performances and street festivals. If you follow these tips, I think you'll have an easy and rewarding experience!

What We Look for in a Volunteer 部分中的 “We ask volunteers to commit a half day a week for three to four months, minimum.”
结合第一段中的 “At the Canadian Museum of Nature. . . with special exhibitions” 和 Benefits of Volunteering 部分中的 “Visit all parts of the museum without any charge.
23. 答案 A。 . . will support staff in the in-person delivery of workshops to school groups” 可知,学校项目的志愿者需要协助举办研讨会。故选 A。
29. 答案A。 故选 A项。
根据第四段中的 “These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth.
32. 答案 A。 故选A。
根据第三段中 “it actually started as an oral(口头的) tradition” 以及 “The recent and increasing popularity of the spoken word is poetry returning to its oral roots.
根据第四段中 “It's the connections that form between the audience and the poet. This adds to the degree of social connection, which is central to the essence of spoken word poetry.”
Here are the measures taken to prevent concussions来承上启下。
38. 答案A。 故选 A。
Their rich experience and better medical care. . .

Meet the Art
This May Day saw numerous visitors to the “Meet the Art” exhibition in our city museum. To cultivate citizen’ s artistic accomplishment, the museum exhibited many fantastic pictures of impressionists and post-impressionists, bringing a feast for the eyes of art lovers. I enjoyed every second of the show and was particularly attracted by Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night and the Sunflowers. Exposed to his colors, forms and imagination, I seemed to have reached his passionate inner world.
I hope in the future shows can last longer and more schools of pictures including Chinese masterpieces can be displayed.
