COVID-19 is not the first disease to migrate from animals to humans. The Black Death of the 14 century was spread by fleas (跳蚤). The H1N1 virus behind the epidemic of 1918 originated in birds. The list goes on.
In the last two decades alone, we've been haunted by zoonotic (动物传染病的) outbreaks, including SARS, MERS, Ebola, bird flu, and most recently, COVID-19 and monkeypox. Some researchers are beginning to call this era a Pandemicene. A study published in the journal Nature in April suggests that climate change may be to blame.
“The study comes from a simple idea,” says Colin Carlson, a global change biologist and a lead author of the paper. Climate change is making many habitats inhabitable. When animals migrate toward cooler climates, they introduce viruses to new environments. “That leads to interesting problems from a viral standpoint,” says Carlson.
To predict displacement patterns, Carlson and his colleagues taught machine-learning models the kinds of habitats used by different mammals. The modeling software then predicted, under a range of possible climate futures, where such conditions might be found in 2070, he explained. Many animals will head to cooler mountains, or to coastal regions with mild climates; Indonesia, the Philippines, the Great Rift Valley, and the Sahel region are all expected to have sky-high human population density and biodiversity levels by the year 2070, making them easy to be affected by outbreaks of zoonotic disease.
Carlson and his colleagues paired these predictions with a model that analyzes why different animals share viruses. The same flight capabilities that make bats excellent mosquito-hunters and seed-spreaders, for example, also make them more likely to transmit diseases. And while it's easier for viruses to spread between closely related species, even viruses for our distant relatives can find purchase in us, given enough opportunities for infection.
Carlson and his colleagues estimate that by 2070, there will be at least 3,000 instances of novel cross-species infection. Not all will become pandemics, but some will.
1.Why is this era called a “Pandemicene” by researchers in Paragraph 2
A.Many species are disappearing from the earth.
B.The climate change has become unpredictable.
C.Habitats for wildlife are destroyed by human activity.
D.Disease transmitted from animals is troubling humans.
2.Which of the following statements would Colin Carlson probably agree
A.Infectious diseases are rarely related to animals.
B.Migration of animals can lead to viral outbreaks.
C.Livable places for wild animals should be protected.
D.Global population and density will reach the peak in 2070.
3.What can be inferred from Carlson's research in Paragraph 5
A.Viruses can be spread between distantly related species.
B.Bats' flight capabilities make them immune to diseases.
C.Wild creatures are given many opportunities to spread disease.
D.Humans may be infected with different viruses at the same time.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Colin Carlson, a Global Change Biologist
B.Climate Change, a Reason for Animal Migration
C.Habitat Protection, an Effective Way to Keep Biodiversity
D.Cross-Species Infection, a Big Threat to Human Beings

More than 40 percent of Antarctica's ice shelves have decreased in the past 25 years, potentially accelerating the sea level rise by allowing more land ice to flow into the ocean.
1 They play a critical role in slowing the flow of ice on land into the ocean by essentially acting as a wall and surround nearly the entire coastline of Antarctica. When ice shelves thin or retreat, ice on the land can flow into the ocean more quickly and accelerate the sea level rise.
Healthy ice shelves naturally retreat and grow over time. An ice shelf is continuously flowing and advancing but will also lose mass through melting or calving, which is when its front breaks off into the ocean. 2 But the large portion of steadily shrinking ice shelves shows this natural cycle is off.
In West Antarctica, the Getz Ice Shelf experienced some of the biggest ice losses, shedding 1.9 trillion tons of ice over the study period. Most ice shelves in East Antarctica however, increased in volume or stayed the same. 3 The region is protected by a band of cold water at the coast, which helps keep nearby warm water at bay. Even so, the study still showed pockets of shrinking ice shelves, and researchers are still investigating the reasons. 4
The current ice shelf data set is not long enough for researchers to definitively make climate change connection yet, but it would be a remarkable coincidence if the natural variability in ice shelves were just that much larger. 5 But we don't need to hit it before seeing an effect on the planet.
A.Then it can gain ice from the land and grow again.
B.Ice shelves are massive floating sections of ice extending from glaciers on land.
C.The east is not as exposed to the warm water like the other side of the continent.
D.The thinning of the ice shelves has shown up in the surrounding environment, too.
E.Ice shelves, not just the big ones, are steadily losing mass over time with no sign of recovery.
F.One theory is that the warmer water on the western side could be slowly coming in the region.
G.Additionally, climate models predict ice shelves will steadily shrink in a warming world as observed, eventually hitting a tipping point for ice sheet collapse.

Alex rode his bike on his way home, and Johnson's pond came into view.
Sometimes his dad took him canoeing (划独木舟) there, and Alex loved it. The pond was always so alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles (乌龟) sunbathing on sunny rocks. Alex was curious about turtles. When it was too rainy to go canoeing, he often went to the library to check out books on turtles.
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided to ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. He jumped off to have a look.
And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn't pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone's finger! What could he do
Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop.
“Are you all right, Alex ” It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos.
“I'm fine, Mrs. Ramos,” said Alex. “I'm just trying to save a turtle. It's probably going to lay eggs.”
“Oh, yeah. It's spring,” said Mrs. Ramos. “So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off.
Alex thought about what Mrs. Ramos had said. “There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn't stand there all day trying to stop cars. He looked around and a road sign caught his eye. And then his face brightened.

根据第二段中的“In the last two decades alone, we've been haunted by zoonotic outbreaks, including...call this era a Pandemicene.”
根据第三段中的“When animals migrate toward cooler climates, they introduce viruses to new environments. ‘That leads to interesting problems from a viral standpoint,’ says Carlson.”
根据第五段中的“And while it's...even viruses for our distant relatives can find purchase in us, given enough opportunities for infection.” 故选A。

Carlson and his colleagues paired these predictions with a model that analyzes why different animals share viruses.
“Carlson and his colleagues paired these predictions with a model”是主句。
下文“They play a critical role in slowing the flow of ice on land into the ocean...accelerate the sea level rise.”
2.A 细节句。上文“Healthy ice shelves naturally retreat and grow over time.” A项中“gain ice from the land and grow again”和前文“naturally retreat and grow over time”相呼应,故选A。
3.C 过渡句。上文“Most ice shelves in East Antarctica however, increased in volume or stayed the same.”以及下文“The region is protected by a band of cold water at the coast, which helps keep nearby warm water at bay.”
上文“Even so, the study still showed pockets of shrinking ice shelves, and researchers are still investigating the reasons.”
上文“The current ice shelf data set is not long enough...were just that much larger.”

He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad. “Dad, can I have some old wood to make a wooden sign ” Alex asked eagerly. Hearing Alex's full explanation, Dad then smiled knowingly. Then the father and son devoted themselves to cutting a wooden board into the right “T” shape. After that, Alex wrote down a line with red paint on both sides of the sign, reading “Slow! Turtles Crossing!” Work all done, they put the wooden sign into their car and went for dinner.
The next morning, Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car. Upon arriving, they sprang into action. Alex pulled the sign to the side of the road and held it tightly while Dad hammered it into the ground. Sweat dripping into their eyes, they worked with passion until the sign got fixed firmly in the ground. Alex stepped back and surveyed their work. “Slow! Turtles Crossing!” he read out loud and grinned. “Ready to go canoeing ” “Yes!” Alex blurted, rushing to the pond with pride.
