Accompanied by her father, using a combination of aid and free climbing and taking advantage of some special equipment and ropes for protection, 10-year-old Selah made it to the top of El Capitan on June 12 after five days of big wall climbing.
Climbing the challenging and adventurous Nose route of El Capitan was a labor of love for Selah in more than one way. Her parents, Mike and Joy Schneiter, fell in love on this 3,000-plus-foot huge rock and she has always wanted to feel the way that her parents felt when they were up there together. Selah showed great interest in rock climbing at an early age. She wore her first rock-climbing equipment shortly after she learned to walk. She first dreamed of climbing El Capitan when she was 6 or 7.
El Capitan is a famous mountain-sized rock in Yosemite National Park. Getting to its top is no easy task. It's taller, as reported, than the tallest building in the world—Dubai's Burj Khalifa Tower. El Capitan's difficult Nose route, which runs more than 3,000 feet high up the center of the rock's face, is considered one of the world's hardest big wall climbs and has attracted the best climbers over time. But never before had a youngster accomplished it.
Selah's achievement caught national attention. Outside magazine called her the youngest documented person to climb the Nose. Ken Yager, president of the Yosemite Climbing Association, said he also couldn't think of anyone younger who had done it.
Selah is humble about her El Capitan accomplishment. “I'm not necessarily a special kid or anything like that,” she said. “There were a few times when I was so worn that it would kind of discourage me from holding on. But overall, it was just great to keep plugging away.”
Selah shared this advice for other young climbers dreaming of big walls, “It doesn't necessarily take a super special person to do something like that. You just have to put your mind to it.”
24.What do we learn about Selah climbing El Capitan
A.She began her climbing on June 5.

26.Which of the following best describes Selah
A.Determined. B.Generous.
C.Warm-hearted. D.Fortunate.
27.What can be Selah's advice for other young climbers
A.Dream big and aim high.
B.Chances favor the prepared mind.
C.Be committed to your ambition.
D.Nothing is impossible for a genius.

Last Friday, a robot called EveR 6 led an orchestra(管弦乐队) in a performance of Korean music at the National Theater of Korea. EveR 6 is about as tall as a person, and has a human-like face that can show emotions. Its joints allow it to move its arms quickly and smoothly in many different directions.
But EveR 6 doesn't think on its own like some advanced Artificial Intelligence programs. Instead, it has a limited group of movements that it has been trained to perform. To make these movements as natural as possible, EveR 6's movements are based on those captured from real human conductors.
In Friday's performance, the National Orchestra of Korea presented a concert titled “Absence”. The concert included five different pieces of music. Two were conducted by EveR 6, and two were conducted by Soo-Yeoul Choi, who leads the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra. Both conductors worked together on the final piece.
Mr. Choi was impressed with the way EveR 6 moved. “The robot was able to present such detailed moves much better than I had imagined,” he said.
But Mr. Choi added that the robot's biggest weakness is that it can't hear. “Some people think that conducting is just a combination of hand waving and keeping the beat,” said Mr. Choi. “But a good conductor needs to listen to the orchestra, so that he or she can correct and encourage the orchestra as it plays.”
Mr. Choi and EveR 6 both conducted a piece of music called “Sense”. Instead of musical notes, EveR 6 had instructions on how to play the piece. The conductors and musicians had to work together to create the music. Mr. Choi communicated with the musicians while EveR 6 kept the beat. Mr. Choi said that once EveR 6 started, the musicians had “no choice but to follow its beats”.
Mr. Choi doesn't think robots are likely to replace human conductors. But he believes robots could be helpful in situations like practice sessions where the same thing needs to be repeated many times.
28.What do we know about EveR 6 from the text
A.It is an experienced conductor.
B.It has a lifelike appearance.
C.It is able to listen to music.
D.It is much shorter than a person.
29.What does the underlined word “captured” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Stolen. B.Stopped. C.Recorded. D.Hidden.
30.What advantage does a human conductor have over EveR 6
A.Waving hands.
B.Keeping the beat.
C.Having instructions.
D.Communicating with musicians.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.A robot conducting an orchestra.
B.An orchestra having performed in Korea.
C.Modern music combined with technology.
D.Two conductors getting worldwide recognition.

Studies have shown most people fail to realize how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.
Frank and Amelia's family were put to a test, using a free app called “Moment-Screen Time Tracker”. The Vascellaros—Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam—all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.
“Honestly, I don't feel like I'm on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent close to four hours on his phone—which came as a shock to him. The children's time varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.
Minneapolis-based Dr Kirsten Lind Seal saw phone usage come up a lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members' phone use has become problematic.
“If we hear more than once, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now Can you please put your phone down Did you hear what I said ’ it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.
Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.
She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. “What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people's feelings and problems——when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people,” she said.
32.How did the family tested by the app feel about the test results
A.Satisfied. B.Doubtful.
C.Uninterested. D.Astonished.
33.Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5
A.To encourage people to live a simple life.
B.To explain the signs of problematic phone use.
C.To show the importance of close relationships.
D.To ask people if they used phones too much.
34.What did Lind Seal want to convey in the last paragraph
A.We should make more face-to-face communication.
B.We can understand each other better using smartphones.
C.Our ability of empathy is strengthened by smartphones.
D.Smartphone usage improves the teens' emotional skills.
35.Where is this text most likely from
A.A diary. B.A guidebook.
C.A novel. D.A magazine.

Check the requirements and deadlines. Avoid getting into trouble because of a simple mistake, and you will have a great time.
Finally, know when to ask for help and advice. Being responsible and independent does not mean being alone. 40 So, seek advice from parents, older siblings, advisors at work, teachers, or someone whom you trust. Opening up channels of communication at a young age is a great habit for success.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The frightening day of our diving test was here. My parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn't feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I'd not be called upon to read. As for the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now, it was another Monday morning—the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive—the jackknife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it's just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end.

Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed.

Become a Volunteer and Make a Difference
The First Tee, as an outstanding youth development organization, is always searching for good people that want to volunteer at one of our many Pittsburgh area locations.
We're Looking for You!
Nationwide, we currently have more than 3,700 coaches signed up with The First Tee as well as volunteers. But you don't have to be a golf professional or even a good golfer. With The First Tee Coach Program, we provide the training you need.
Developed with input from leading experts in the field of positive youth development, our program focuses on making participants stronger and more confident through decision-making and exploring options, inspiring the golfers of tomorrow to look to the future, set up goals, and unlock their potential.
We also need more volunteers to make The First Tee possible. Opportunities include:
Assistant Coach: Assist in our weekly golf clinics. All that we request is that you make a 7-week commitment (one day per week), for 2 hours each week. Each clinic is led by one of our trained staff members who creates a written lesson plan for our volunteers to follow.
Database Manager: Input the data of participants, volunteers, and community relation records and update chapter information for Home Office and community relations. The database manager is expected to update the data a minimum of every other week.
Equipment Manager: Organize and sort donated equipment, get rid of unfit equipment, and arrange equipment for distribution to participants at least once a week.
Greeter: Register participants, hand information to parents, greet visitors, answer phone calls and provide general program information.
The Process of Becoming a Volunteer
Begin by filling out the Google Forms application below. Once Alison Boyle (our director of Volunteer and Participant Services) receives your completed application, she will contact you for an in-person interview.

At the airport, one of my partners greeted me with a broad smile. “Welcome to Cuba!” he exclaimed in perfect English, giving me a strong handshake and a hug. The next day, we drove to the research center where he worked. In the conference room, each of us gave a presentation about science and what we hoped to learn from the study of Cuban rivers.
Then, we toured every lab in the building. I met scientists, technicians, secretaries, students, and the cook. Some spoke English, and others communicated with me in Spanish while my cooperator translated. I was introduced to each person in their center, and that was what I remembered most.
Then we met again to brainstorm. Together, we studied maps carefully to plan how we were going to collect samples. Had it not been for the Cubans, I would have been unaware that the maps I had were outdated and wrong. They left out reservoirs, which was a problem because had we sampled downstream of them, our results would have been misled.
On the last night of the trip, we searched for a restaurant that could seat all 14 of us at one table because that's what teams do—sitting together. When a restaurant couldn't seat the team without splitting us up, my partners insisted that we move on and find another restaurant with a large enough table.
In 26 years as a professor, I've always tried my best to treat my students as valuable partners. I have never been a fan of the grade system in the academic world. I urge everyone working with me to feel as though they are part of a team. But my Cuban partners take teamwork to another level entirely. They make it clear—through actions, both big and small—that all team members are valued, that everyone is equal, and that true teamwork contributes to better science.
I returned to the United States as a changed scientist. Now, I spend more time listening and making sure that everyone's voice is heard.

Katherine Rooks, a Denver-based writer, had sent her son a text message about coming home from school. “I could tell from his response that he became upset suddenly about our thread. And when he came home, he came over and said, ‘What did you mean by this ’” Rooks was confused. “So we looked at the text together and I said, ‘Well, I meant, see you later, or something. I don't remember exactly what it said.' And he said, ‘But you ended with a full stop! I thought you were really angry!’” Rooks wasn't angry, and she explained to her son that, well, periods (句号) are how you end a sentence.
But in text-messaging—at least for younger adults—periods do more than just end a sentence: they also can set a tone. Gretchen McCulloch, a linguist, said that when it comes to text-messaging, the period has lost its original purpose. But that doesn't mean the period has lost all the purposes in text-messaging. Now it can be used to indicate seriousness or a sense of finality. “But caution is needed,” said McCulloch, noting that problems can start to arise when you combine a period with a positive emotion, like “sure” or “sounds good”.
A period can accidentally set a tone. A recent study conducted by psychology professor Celia Klin at Binghamton University confirmed this. Researchers asked undergraduates to evaluate a text exchange that included an innocent question and the answer “Yes”. Some saw “Yes” with a period and some saw the word without. They found consistently through many experiments that “Yes” with a period resulted in responses that were more negative. So people thought “Yes” with a period was less friendly, less sincere, and so on. “I really don't like getting text messages that end in periods because it always feels so passive-aggressive,” said Juan Abenante Rincon, 24, a social media manager for Adidas. “Like, are you mad What's going on Like, did I do something wrong ”
Klin said that this demonstrates that language is constantly changing. “Language evolution has happened; it'll continue to happen, and isn't it great that we're so linguistically flexible and creative ”
28. Why does the text begin with Katherine's conflict with her son
A.To show youngsters' attitudes towards texting.
B.To emphasize the great power of words.
C.To suggest the right use of punctuation marks.
D.To introduce the use of periods in texting.
29.Why is Juan Abenante Rincon mentioned in the text
A.To put forward doubts about the recent study.
B.To make assessments on the recent study.
C.To show great opposition to the recent study.
D.To confirm the findings of the recent study.
30.What is Celia Klin's attitude towards the changes in the meanings of full stops
A.Disapproving. B.Positive.
C.Worried. D.Conservative.
31. What can be the suitable title of the passage
A.Language Evolution: Be Flexible
B.Language Evolution: Be Consistent
C.Full Stops: Be Original
D.Full Stops: Be Cautious

Video conferencing has been around for more than 20 years. In the past, you would find that many people needing to attend a meeting remotely would be calling from a real conference room full of their teammates. Today, we're routinely holding video conferences that are 100% virtual. And this is creating a problem that technology can't fix.
The problem is us, specifically the fact that we haven't evolved socially to the point where we can bear much separation. So much of our well-being and work productivity is decided on how close we are physically. The removal of that for any period of time can be severely damaging. One surprising victim of social distance is laughter.
Normally people laugh about 18 times per day. And 97% of that time we're laughing with others—we are 30 times more likely to laugh with others than to laugh alone. Think about it: how often when you and your friends laugh at something, is that something actually funny Research shows that 80% of what people laugh at is really not that funny.
So why do people laugh They laugh in order to laugh with others. Just as everyone starts yawning when just one person yawns, most people can't help but laugh when those around them do.This is why TV comedy shows often use prerecorded laugh tracks.
Laughing in response to other people's laughing is not just a behavioral phenomenon. When we laugh, our body produces two key chemicals: endorphin which helps relieve pain and sets off feelings of pleasure, and dopamine which can improve learning, motivation and attention. In fact, statistics show that people can stand 15% more pain simply by laughing for a few minutes beforehand. Laughter is also associated with higher motivation and productivity at work.
In today's home-alone, virtual-team world, this is exactly what you as a team leader should be doing: for your team members to stay healthy and productive, you need to get them to laugh more and stress less.
32.What is the problem mentioned at the start of the text
A.Physical weakness.
B.Lack of technology.
C.Social distance.
D.Reliance on virtual conferences.
33.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.Laugh tracks are popular.
B.Laughing is uncontrollable.

D.Laughing comes more easily in groups.
34.What can we learn from the fifth paragraph
A.Laughter has a great effect on our work.
B.Laughing may reduce our enthusiasm for work.
C.Laughing is an unconscious behavioral phenomenon.
D.Laughing can make our body lose some chemicals.
35.What would the author most probably discuss next
A.Concrete steps to produce laughter in a team.
B.Other factors that may influence a team's health.
C.Ways to tell the real world from the virtual world.
D.The importance of maintaining work productivity.

Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. 36 Yet language is not the only way to express our ideas and feelings. Body movements, eye contact, gestures, and facial expressions are other forms of language we call nonverbal communication. 37 According to a social anthropologist, Edward T. Hall, in a normal conversation between two persons, less than 15% of social meaning is transmitted (传达) by words.
Different cultures have different ways of using nonverbal communication and people have different gestures to convey their expressions. However, nonverbal communication, like traffic, is not random (随意的);it has a purpose. 38 Learning the different common rules of body language in different cultures is very useful for us to understand each other better.
People coming from the same culture share common understanding by using the same body language such as eye management, facial expressions, gestures, and body movements. 39 For example, “arms”, which are used little by Nordics during a conversation, are an important element in one's communicative weaponry (武器) in Italy, Spain, and South America. 40 In these cultures, one should stand with feet pressed together and hands interlaced (交错) in front of the body. In cultures such as America, where you often stand with your feet shoulder-length apart, arms at your side, standing in this fashion might be interpreted as being shy and insecure.
A.Misuse of body language can be unpleasant.
B.And there are common rules to guide its flow.
C.Without language, culture would not be possible.
D.Body language makes up the largest part of our nonverbal communication.
E.But in different cultures nonverbal communication takes on different patterns.
F.If you're learning a new language, a great way is to watch movies and TV shows.
G.In Africa, standing in a too “open” fashion means that your posture might be inappropriate.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the three extra dollars to buy it for him. It was a kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was a kind of product that wasted a parent's money and made me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal ” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then—bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.

On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Elephant Conservation
Country:Thailand
This is a working vacation at a wildlife centre. Anyone can become a volunteer if he/she agrees to help the elephant keepers with tasks.
Daily tasks
Collect the elephants at 6:30 a.m. Take them to look for food in the forest. Clean the enclosure. Swim with the elephants in the lake in the afternoon. If volunteers want to relax after work, they can watch satellite television.
How this vacation helps
If these elephants hadn't been rescued, they would still be living on the streets of Bangkok. A rural environment is much better for them than an urban environment where there is lots of pollution.
Gorilla(大猩猩) Safari
Countries:Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda
Departures:Aug.-Dec., 2-3 departures per month
Extras:£220 for each gorilla permit
If you're lucky, you'll see lions, elephants and rhinos(犀牛) during this safari. The highlight of the trip is the opportunity to see gorillas in the mountain forests. However, you must be in good health—if a gorilla caught a cold, it would be extremely harmful to its whole family.
How this vacation helps
There are only about 600 mountain gorillas left in the world as human activity has reduced the area where they can live. When you buy a permit, this will pay for the protection of the national park.
Polar Bear Watching
Country:Canada
Departures:sixty trips between Oct. 1 and Nov. 19
Every October and November, groups of polar bears gather in Hudson Bay. As they are normally lonely creatures, this is unusual. The bears wait for the ocean to freeze so they can hunt seals, so this is the perfect opportunity to see them.
How this vacation helps
If the Arctic ice cap melts due to global warming, polar bears will be in danger. We give a share of our profits to the charity that protects polar bears.
Your comment
These awesome bears get all the liquid they need from their food.

Thirty-five years ago, with just one acre of land, a couple of seeds and a bucket of hope, one Nigerian-born scientist began his mission to defeat famine (饥荒) on his continent.
News of the drought across Africa in the early 1980s troubled Nzamujo. Equipped with a microbiology PhD and his faith, he travelled back to Africa. There, he found a continent ecologically rich, diverse and capable of producing food. He believed drought wasn't the only reason for widespread hunger, and that sustainability had been left out.
Nzamujo began designing a “zero waste” agricultural system that would not only increase food security, but also help the environment and create jobs. In 1985, he started his sustainable farm “Songhai” in the West African country of Benin.
Nzamujo lives on the farm and constantly updates his techniques. He credits his degrees in science and engineering with Songhai's success. But he also thanks his spiritual and cultural roots, and his father—a driving force in his life who encouraged him to pursue his studies to the highest degree and to use Songhai to share his knowledge.
Songhai has several “eco-literacy” development programs. They range from 18-month training courses for farmer-enterprisers, to shorter stays to learn techniques like weeding. People come from all over the world to study Nzamujo's methods.
After seeing success on his first zero waste farm, he expanded throughout Benin and western Africa. Today, the Songhai model is applied across the continent, including Nigeria, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Nzamujo says they've trained more than 7,000 farmer-enterprisers and more than 30,000 people in total since it began.
Nzamujo believes zero waste agriculture is now steadily tackling the issues he set out to defeat—hunger, unemployment and environmental decline. And he wants to see it go further.
24.Which factor related to famine was unnoticed in Nzamujo's eyes
A.Poor soil. B.Water shortage.
C.Lack of resources. D.Unsustainability.
25.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3

A.By offering land. B.By trading seeds.
C.By educating farmers. D.By selling technology.
27.Which of the following best describes Nzamujo
A.Critical and careful. B.Learned and responsible.
C.Optimistic and generous. D.Considerate and ambitious.

This fall, students at the University of Massachusetts found a new menu at their commons(食堂): the “diet for a cooler planet” menu. This meant herb-roasted lamb, raised with a carbon-friendly approach. It included sweet potatoes that had been picked from a local farm's field post-harvest. The options were plant-heavy, locally grown, and involved little to no packaging.
“We wanted to let students participate in climate action by making choices about their food,” says Kathy Wicks, sustainability director for UMass Dining. The university is not alone in this effort. Increasingly, American consumers and institutions are thinking about how their food choices factor into climate change. For many, small choices at the grocery store, dining hall, and restaurant can feel more accessible than big-ticket options like buying a fuel-efficient car or installing home solar panels.
Small changes in dietary habits may make a big difference. Climate activists often target fossil fuels and transportation systems, but studies point to the food system as a significant contributor to global warming. According to Project Drawdown, a research organization that evaluates climate solutions, the way food is grown, transported, and consumed accounts for about a quarter of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. Beef is a regular target. “If, on average, Americans cut a quarter pound of beef per week from their diet, it's like taking 10 million cars off the road a year,” says Sujatha Bergen, director of health campaigns for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Food waste ranks third among climate solutions. While much waste occurs before consumers are involved—food is left on the field or thrown away because it does not fit appearance standards, Americans also throw out a lot of food they have purchased: about $1, 600 worth a year per family of four.
“People are beginning to understand that their food choices make a big impact on climate,” says Megan Larmer, director of regional food at the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in New York. But, she cautions that substantial change will need to come from the whole food system.

A.To promote low-carbon awareness.
B.To reduce the cost of food packaging.
C.To popularize the plant-heavy diet.
D.To market the local-farming products.

B.Food is a decisive factor in global warming.
C.Universities are working together in climate action.
D.Fuel-efficient cars are not affordable for consumers.
30. What does Sujatha Bergen say about beef
A.It is popular among millions of car drivers.
B.It has a great influence on carbon reduction.
C.It plays a significant role in American diet.
D.It accounts for a quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Global Warming: A Disastrous Threat
B.Low-Carbon Diet: A Craze, or More

Poaching (偷猎) is a major cause of decline of the elephants' population, with a total decrease to about 415,000, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The research team found that poaching occurred more frequently in Central Africa and near the Mozambique-Tanzania border. In recent years, Garamba National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, saw more than 860 elephants die at the hands of poachers, and the Selous Game Reserve, in Tanzania, more than 750. Researchers discovered that the household wealth of those surrounding areas was relatively low and they hold mid-level health.
Researchers said, “Illegal killings are driven by criminal networks who recruit poachers rather than by opportunistic hunters. When a lot of Africa's national parks were established, people were often forced to be evicted from the land that was now designated as a protected area. Local people who had been lived on hunting suddenly became described as poachers.”
People living within about five miles of wildlife protected areas in Tanzania also reported losing up to half their income. A local survey showed the destruction of their crops by elephants and killings of their livestock by lions. Someone added, “If you're closest to the park, you really do suffer more cost than benefit of the protected area.”
Researchers also noted, “When local communities enjoy the benefits of conservation, it will reduce incentives (诱因) to poach. When governments ensure that local communities are not subject to carrying the burden of the costs associated with this wildlife, they will have more access to income-generating opportunities that can help to lift communities out of poverty.”
Conservationists have to think creatively, carrying out strategies such as reducing demand in ivory-consuming countries, improving educational standards and medical facilities, and increasing support for wildlife rangers. “When we are looking to protect wildlife, we can't do that without thinking about the well-being of people,” researchers said.
32.What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 imply
A.Elephants mainly appear in Africa.
