Listening to guitarist MiloKaradagli's album, you will find yourself wandering in a world where you are surrounded by amazing classical guitar music. “I want to wake classical guitar music up from its hibernation and show what I can do and what my instrument can do,” said Milo.
Born 37 years ago in a small town in Yugoslavia, he was inspired from an early age to be a performer. Since his country had a small population and no formal music school, making a career on the instrument was extremely hard for him. It all began when Milo discovered an ancient, dusty guitar with broken strings in his basement. Strangely, this broken instrument convinced him that he must become a guitarist. By the age of 9, he had been giving public performances, and at 11 he won his first national competition. He was also a talented singer and became a TV and radio star.
Unfortunately, Yugoslavia was torn apart in 1992, and because of the war, Milo's family suffered food shortages. Fast forward to 1996, when Milo became a teenager, he had his first opportunity to travel outside of his hometown to play a concert. It was in Paris that he was amazed by its Western European prosperity and air of Christmas happiness.
During the trip, he made up his mind to study at the Royal Academy of Music. He sent a home-made tape of his performance to the academy, where a professor found something special in his playing, so Milo was admitted to the academy. Afterwards, Milo earned First Class Honors and a master's degree, and his albums are highly praised by other world-famous guitarists.
However, this is just the beginning for Milo, and his horizons seem limitless. He has been making a variety of plans for broadening the classical music's reach.
24.What can we learn about Milo from this story
A.He studied music in a college in his own country.

C.Travelling to Paris enabled him to get further education.
D.Poverty was the main reason for him to play the guitar.
25.How was Milo admitted to the Royal Academy of Music

Ann has been severely paralysed (瘫痪)for more than 18 years. She cannot speak and normally communicate. But now, she has been able to speak through an image on the computer using technology that translates her brain signals into speech and facial expressions.
The advance raises hopes that the technology could be on the edge of transforming the lives of people who have lost the ability to speak due to conditions like strokes (中风).
The latest technology uses tiny electrodes (电极) put on the top layer of the brain to detect electrical activity in the part of the brain that controls speech and face movements. These signals are translated directly into a digital avatar's (化身) speech and facial expressions including smiling, frowning or surprise.
The team put 253 paper-thin electrodes on the top layer of Ann's brain over an area important to speech. Afterwards Ann worked with the team to train the system to detect her unique brain signals for various speech sounds by repeating different phrases repeatedly. The computer learned 39 distinctive sounds and a ChatGPT-style language system was used to translate the signals into understandable sentences. This was then used to control an avatar with a voice personalised to sound like Ann's voice before the injury, based on a recording of her speaking at her wedding.
The technology was not perfect, translating words incorrectly 28% of the time in a test run involving more than 500 phrases, and it generated brain-to-text at a rate of 78 words a minute, compared with 110-150 words typically spoken in natural conversation. However, scientists said the latest advances in accuracy and speed suggest the technology is now at a point of being practically useful for patients. A crucial next step is to create a wireless form that could be put beneath the skull (颅骨).
28.How can Ann speak
A.By tiny electrodes on her brain.
B.Through an avatar using the latest technology.
C.Through repeating different phrases repeatedly.
D.By a technology that detects her brain signals.
29.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.How the technology works.
B.How the technology benefits the patients.
C.How the technology translates the brain signal.
D.How the technology is put into wide application.
30.Which is unnecessary to make the avatar sound like Ann
A.Ann's cooperation.
B.Ann's facial expressions.
C.An AI language system.
D.A recording of Ann's speaking.
31.What do we know about the technology according to the last paragraph
A.It is a promising way to help patients.
B.Its translating speed is too slow.
C.It cannot be applied to patients.
D.It is not accurate in translating at all.

Humans' ever spreading presence around the globe influences patterns of biological evolution in ways that we are just beginning to explore. On the Galápagos Islands, a body of evidence shows that the effect of our presence is increasing.
Luis F. De Leon from the University of Massachusetts Boston, together with other 6 scientists spent two years observing Darwin's finches (雀科小鸟) to evaluate our effects on their behavior. They started by conducting feeding observations on coexisting finch species at sites that ranged from non-urban areas to urban areas. They also employed finch-human interaction experiments to test whether and how finches respond to human presence. To measure whether finch feeding preferences varied with the degree of urbanization, “cafeteria” experiments were carried out—finches were presented with a selection of human and native food items.
The scientists found that Darwin's finches fed almost on human foods like rice and cookies or introduced garden species at urban locations. In contrast, at non-urban sites, finches fed mainly on native plant species and insects. Interaction tests suggest that urban birds get more accustomed to the presence of humans. Finally, at all sites of regular human presence, finches preferred human foods to natural foods.
The researchers warn that exploiting urban environments might present organisms (有机体) with challenges, including shorter lifespans brought by the consumption of highly processed foods. Furthermore, the year-round availability of abundant human foods in urban environments might affect ecological and evolutionary processes that promoted species diversity. While the results clearly show a shift to human foods at urban sites, the adaptive significance of that shift is still an open question.
These findings also suggest that human behavior is the main driver of finch preference for human foods. The researchers propose a possibility that the effect of human behavior is facilitated by our tendency to feed birds, directly or inadvertently via food dropping or littering.
32.How did the scientists carry out the study
A.By carrying out experiments in labs.
B.By training finches and observing results.
C.By observing finches in different sites.
D.By analyzing findings from previous experiments.
33.Which is probably finches' favorite food at non-urban sites frequently visited by humans
A.Rice.
B.An insect.
C.The leaves of a native plant.
D.The seed of an introduced plant.
34.What can we learn from the findings
A.All finches observed are willing to approach humans.
B.Human food availability might lead to biodiversity loss.
C.The reason for the shift of finch diets remains unknown.
D.The more processed food finches consume, the longer they live.
35.What does the underlined word “inadvertently” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Illegally. B.Voluntarily. C.Deliberately. D.Unintentionally.
With the New Year approaching, year-end reviews dominate the airwaves. 36 . Lose ten pounds Read a book a month However, I've never given much thought to New Year's resolutions. I make intentions instead. It means setting one's purpose toward a path instead of action toward specific behaviors. And more than that, I'm setting them in a framework (框架) that will give them wings.
Set time, not goals
A wise friend once told me, “Do not set a result as the goal. Set the time in which you do the things you want to do.” For example, I usually tell myself I should write more. 37 . Then, I realize it would be better to set my intention to write and the time to write, say, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Take advantage of the Premack Principle
The Premack Principle is a behavioral strategy that states that the presence of a high-probability behavior can make a low-probability behavior more likely. 38 . So, now that I've set my intention to write and the time to write, I can link it to a high-probability behavior, such as dropping my kids off at school in the morning. The point is that it gets the action rolling without much thought or self-motivating talk. 39 .
 40
Let's face it, no matter what a big intention you set. If there's no enjoyment once you start, it will likely fall by the wayside. So, find a path you enjoy and that will bring the same results. In truth, I hate exercising, but, luckily, I walk my dog. A lovely way to exercise, go out in nature, enjoy companionship, and meet people!
A.Face your intention directly
B.One intention, multiple paths
C.Over time, it becomes routine as well
D.But the result proves far from satisfactory
E.Perhaps most are also making new year resolutions
F.Resolutions seem to hold people prisoners rather than free them
G.In other words, to enact a new behavior, attach it to a well-established behavior

Andy rode slowly on his way to school, daydreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.
He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the sky. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm (一大群) of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and they seemed to be heading angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding with great speed but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings (蜇伤). The last sting had landed him in hospital and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to lie in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father's words came to him, “When you are in a tight situation, don't panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it.”
On a nearby hill, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson's home. “Bees don't like smoke,” he thought. “They couldn't get into the house.” Andy raced towards the Nelson's house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon. But he tried his best to keep calm so that he could come up with an idea to escape from the dangerous situation. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a small dam which was often used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden.
Without hesitation, Andy jumped off his bike and dived into the cool water.

根据文章第一段第二、三句和第三段中的“The latest technology uses...These signals are translated directly into a digital avatar's (化身) speech and facial expressions”可知,通过使用最新技术可以将大脑信号转化成一种数字化身,以语言或面部表情表达出来,这样Ann就可以说话了。故选B(通过使用了最新技术的化身)。
故选A。
根据文章第四段中的“Afterwards Ann worked with the team to train the system”“a ChatGPT-style language system was used to translate the signals”和“a voice personalised to sound like Ann's voice before the injury, based on a recording of her speaking at her wedding”可知,为了使化身听起来像Ann,需要的是Ann的合作、一套AI语言训练系统以及Ann之前的声音。
故选A。
D
故选A。
根据空后的“Lose ten pounds ...New Year's resolutions.” E项中的resolutions与空后的“Lose ten pounds Read a book a month ”内容吻合,E项中的new year与空前的“With the New Year approaching”相呼应。
根据空后的“So...in the morning.”
根据空后的“Let's face it...will bring the same results.”

故填has been owned。
故填using。
see...as... see land as a gift意为“视土地为一份礼物”,符合语境,故填as。
故填is located。
故填which。
根据make it可知此处是“make+宾语+宾补”结构,it是宾语,空处作宾补;be accessible to意为“对于……
根据“only shallow boats under 22 feet can land on it”可知设空处前后为转折关系,由语境可知设空处表示“但是”,前后为完整句子,设空处应用连词,故填but。
One possible version:
Dear friends,
In order to encourage us to save energy and protect our environment, I'm going to make the following suggestions.
First, I suggest that we should walk or take bikes if we go out. Second, we can reduce the use of bottled water and unrecyclable items, such as disposable wooden chopsticks and plastic bags. Besides, if we can turn off our TV sets and mobile phones for one day every week, it will be of great benefit to saving energy.
I believe everyone has a responsibility to protect our environment. Let's take action now.
The Students' Union
第二节
One possible version:
Without hesitation, Andy jumped off his bike and dived into the cool water. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the slope and rang the doorbell. Mr. Nelson happened to be home and seeing the tired and wet boy, the owner took him inside. After knowing what Andy had experienced, he praised the boy and rang his mother.
In no time, his mother appeared in front of him. Seeing Andy, his mother anxiously asked whether he was injured. Andy answered it was the dam that saved him. His mother laughed with relief and said he really needed that fishing trip to help him recover. But Andy did not hear her. He was thinking his father's words, “When you are in a tight situation, don't panic.” And he realized how important it was to listen to parents.
