Accompanied by her father, using a combination of aid and free climbing and taking advantage of some special equipment and ropes for protection, 10-year-old Selah made it to the top of El Capitan on June 12 after five days of big wall climbing.
Climbing the challenging and adventurous Nose route of El Capitan was a labor of love for Selah in more than one way. Her parents, Mike and Joy Schneiter, fell in love on this 3,000-plus-foot huge rock and she has always wanted to feel the way that her parents felt when they were up there together. Selah showed great interest in rock climbing at an early age. She wore her first rock-climbing equipment shortly after she learned to walk. She first dreamed of climbing El Capitan when she was 6 or 7.
El Capitan is a famous mountain-sized rock in Yosemite National Park. Getting to its top is no easy task. It's taller, as reported, than the tallest building in the world—Dubai's Burj Khalifa Tower. El Capitan's difficult Nose route, which runs more than 3,000 feet high up the center of the rock's face, is considered one of the world's hardest big wall climbs and has attracted the best climbers over time. But never before had a youngster accomplished it.
Selah's achievement caught national attention. Outside magazine called her the youngest documented person to climb the Nose. Ken Yager, president of the Yosemite Climbing Association, said he also couldn't think of anyone younger who had done it.
Selah is humble about her El Capitan accomplishment. “I'm not necessarily a special kid or anything like that,” she said. “There were a few times when I was so worn that it would kind of discourage me from holding on. But overall, it was just great to keep plugging away.”
Selah shared this advice for other young climbers dreaming of big walls, “It doesn't necessarily take a super special person to do something like that. You just have to put your mind to it.”
24.What do we learn about Selah climbing El Capitan

Last Friday, a robot called EveR 6 led an orchestra(管弦乐队) in a performance of Korean music at the National Theater of Korea. EveR 6 is about as tall as a person, and has a human-like face that can show emotions. Its joints allow it to move its arms quickly and smoothly in many different directions.
But EveR 6 doesn't think on its own like some advanced Artificial Intelligence programs. Instead, it has a limited group of movements that it has been trained to perform. To make these movements as natural as possible, EveR 6's movements are based on those captured from real human conductors.
In Friday's performance, the National Orchestra of Korea presented a concert titled “Absence”. The concert included five different pieces of music. Two were conducted by EveR 6, and two were conducted by Soo-Yeoul Choi, who leads the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra. Both conductors worked together on the final piece.
Mr. Choi was impressed with the way EveR 6 moved. “The robot was able to present such detailed moves much better than I had imagined,” he said.
But Mr. Choi added that the robot's biggest weakness is that it can't hear. “Some people think that conducting is just a combination of hand waving and keeping the beat,” said Mr. Choi. “But a good conductor needs to listen to the orchestra, so that he or she can correct and encourage the orchestra as it plays.”
Mr. Choi and EveR 6 both conducted a piece of music called “Sense”. Instead of musical notes, EveR 6 had instructions on how to play the piece. The conductors and musicians had to work together to create the music. Mr. Choi communicated with the musicians while EveR 6 kept the beat. Mr. Choi said that once EveR 6 started, the musicians had “no choice but to follow its beats”.
Mr. Choi doesn't think robots are likely to replace human conductors. But he believes robots could be helpful in situations like practice sessions where the same thing needs to be repeated many times.
28.What do we know about EveR 6 from the text
A.It is an experienced conductor.
B.It has a lifelike appearance.
C.It is able to listen to music.
D.It is much shorter than a person.
29.What does the underlined word “captured” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Stolen. B.Stopped. C.Recorded. D.Hidden.
30.What advantage does a human conductor have over EveR 6
A.Waving hands.
B.Keeping the beat.
C.Having instructions.
D.Communicating with musicians.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.A robot conducting an orchestra.
B.An orchestra having performed in Korea.
C.Modern music combined with technology.
D.Two conductors getting worldwide recognition.

Studies have shown most people fail to realize how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.
Frank and Amelia's family were put to a test, using a free app called “Moment-Screen Time Tracker”. The Vascellaros—Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam—all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.
“Honestly, I don't feel like I'm on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent close to four hours on his phone—which came as a shock to him. The children's time varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.
Minneapolis-based Dr Kirsten Lind Seal saw phone usage come up a lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members' phone use has become problematic.
“If we hear more than once, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now Can you please put your phone down Did you hear what I said ’ it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.
Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.
She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. “What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people's feelings and problems——when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people,” she said.
32.How did the family tested by the app feel about the test results
A.Satisfied. B.Doubtful.
C.Uninterested. D.Astonished.
33.Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5
A.To encourage people to live a simple life.
B.To explain the signs of problematic phone use.
C.To show the importance of close relationships.
D.To ask people if they used phones too much.
34.What did Lind Seal want to convey in the last paragraph
A.We should make more face-to-face communication.
B.We can understand each other better using smartphones.
C.Our ability of empathy is strengthened by smartphones.
D.Smartphone usage improves the teens' emotional skills.
35.Where is this text most likely from
A.A diary. B.A guidebook.
C.A novel. D.A magazine.

First, participate in extra-curricular activities. Schools give students opportunities for staying active. Pick an activity that appeals to you such as athletics, academic clubs, or special-interest clubs. Extra-curricular activities build characters through team work, time-management, and competition. Don't be too worried if you aren't very good at what you like, for the important thing is passion. 37
Besides, volunteer. 38 Meanwhile, volunteering can teach you job-related skills such as responsibility and time-management. Some schools also reward the learning aspect of volunteer work with credit hours. If you are interested in college, volunteering makes you much more appealing during the application process.

Check the requirements and deadlines. Avoid getting into trouble because of a simple mistake, and you will have a great time.
Finally, know when to ask for help and advice. Being responsible and independent does not mean being alone. 40 So, seek advice from parents, older siblings, advisors at work, teachers, or someone whom you trust. Opening up channels of communication at a young age is a great habit for success.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The frightening day of our diving test was here. My parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn't feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I'd not be called upon to read. As for the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now, it was another Monday morning—the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive—the jackknife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it's just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear Daniel,
I'm sorry to hear that you had an argument with your mother.
In my opinion, you should apologize to your mother, as she has done nothing wrong to prevent you from Internet addiction. Many students spend most of the time playing computer games or chatting aimlessly with others, which may not only result in poor health and decline in study, but also loss of communication in the real world.
As students, we should devote our energy to study. When available, you may as well walk outside with your friends or take some exercise to keep fit instead of playing computer games. Only in this way can you live and study happily and healthily.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end. Looking down, I found all my classmates were looking up at me. My face suddenly felt hot. Finally, I ignored them. Picturing the four steps of diving, I jumped. Then I folded my body but failed to reach my toes. And instead of entering the water like an arrow, I fell into the water, with my body being flat. As a result, it caused a huge sound, which made all the classmates burst out laughing.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed. After class, Ms. Robbins comforted and encouraged me. In the following many Monday mornings, I practiced again and again under her guidance. Gradually, I became more confident and less shy. Finally, I attended the diving test again and performed well. This time, my classmates cheered and clapped. I was so glad. I knew my success resulted from my beating my shyness and my hard practice.
