Throughout history, great cities have risen and fallen. Some of them are seemingly lost in time—until artifacts(古物) that bring them back to life are discovered.
Teotihuacán
Located outside of Mexico City, Teotihuacán is thought to have been settled around 300 BC. By 600 AD, it was the most influential, powerful city in its region. Teotihuacán s real treasure is its massive step pyramids. Much of the city s history is still a mystery, but some believe that its decline resulted from changing climate conditions like long-term droughts.
Petra
This ancient city in southern Jordan flourished from 400 BC to 106 AD. It was an important place for spice and silk trade routes. Furthermore, it had a complicatedly-designed water management system. Petra was occupied by Rome in 106 AD, and the trade routes soon shifted. Hundreds of years later, earthquakes damaged the water system and Petra was abandoned.
Pompeii
Endless tales have been told about the tragedy of Pompeii, which occurred on August 24, in the year 79 AD, when the volcano Vesuvius erupted. The entire town was swiftly covered in ash and magma(岩浆). Everything was frozen in time. The site was unearthed in the 18th century, and the evidence found provided a great detail of insight into daily living in this ancient Italian city.
Ctesiphon
Located about 20 miles outside of Baghdad, Ctesiphon was one of the greatest cities in Western Asia in the 6th century. However, it was conquered(攻克) by Rome, and then by the Sassanid Empire. In 636 AD, it was captured by the Muslims. Many believe that the ancient city was the inspiration for the city of Isbanir mentioned in The Arabian Nights folk tales.

As I prepared for my Level 8 Royal Conservatory of Music piano exam, memories of previous disappointing marks filled me with dread and anxiety. The mere thought of booking the exam made me feel completely strained. However, fate had other plans in store for me.
Just when I thought things couldn t get any worse, my trusty 10-year-old electric piano malfunctioned. The middle C note played as an F-sharp, and multiple other keys were out of tune.
Despite my distress, my father refused to buy a new piano and instead urged me to be more resourceful. Initially, I was at a loss without my beloved electric piano. But after struggling for a few days, I decided to practice at school. Throughout my time at the private school, I was determined to find every available piano room on campus. After discovering hidden pianos in corners, I spent countless hours practicing. As my exam drew near, the music teachers knew exactly where to find me.
One day, while practicing in a piano room, one of my teachers walked in and offered me a mini exam. To my surprise, she was impressed by my progress and offered valuable feedback on how to improve my technique. My hard work and dedication paid off. Behind the piano, I found a place where I could be anyone.
Playing the piano became my escape from the anxieties of adolescence and allowed me to express myself freely. When it was time to play in front of the examiner, I no longer feared judgment. Instead, I only feared not being able to represent all my hard work. As the lights came on, I thought about the incredible journey that brought me to that moment.
Eventually, I received my mark. Not only did I achieve a rarely given “well done”, but I also discovered a newfound appreciation of music. Whenever I feel discouraged, I look at the gleaming keys of my new upright piano and remember the valuable lesson I learned. As my father always says, some lessons are best learned the hard way.

Together they are worth £280 million and now they have been jointly named “Entrepreneur of the Year”.
It is an inspirational tale. Yet despite their wealth and this award, Vijay remains modest about their success. He praises his mother, “She is an incredible lady. She taught us hard work and honesty, and we have based our lives on those qualities.”
In 1967, Vijay kissed his mother goodbye to London to make his fortune. “I had little more than my qualifications and £5,” says Vijay. “But to go with those, I had a huge ambition to make something of myself,” he recalls. Typically, Vijay looks on the bright side. “When you start from zero, things can t get any worse. You have only one way to go and that s up—if there is a hunger in your stomach for success,” Vijay says. “My brother and I made up our minds to better ourselves and Britain was the land of opportunity.” They wouldn t pass up the opportunity.
By 1982, he had owned six chemist s shops, when Bhikhu, a then financial analyst, joined him, adding some “financial disciplines” to his company. Vijay says, “I simply couldn t have done it without him.” As he puts it, “Brought up under one roof, we understand one another from A to Z.”
Vijay is keen to continue repaying the country where he has made his achievement. “We hope we are model citizens and would like to remain so,” he says. “We are lucky enough to live in a country that never stands in our way.” His message for young people is to do the same: “Identify your goal, and do not let anything discourage you from achieving that goal.”

There are more than 28,000 routinely tracked objects orbiting Earth. The debris(残骸)is dominated by fragments from about 560 known breakups, explosions, and collisions of satellites or rocket bodies. Today s already active satellite infrastructure(基础设施)provides a multitude of critical services for modern society. Its loss would severely damage modern society.
Furthermore, a new era in space has just started, driven by commercial, low latency broadband services that rely on large constellations of satellites in low Earth orbit. These will revolutionize connectivity on the ground and in the air. However, they will also increase space traffic. Congestion(拥塞) in space is only going to get worse.
The debris decrease strategies defined two decades ago by experts in the world s leading space agencies aim to prevent explosive breakups by releasing remaining energy from space systems at the end of their missions, and to “get rid of” a space object. Although these strategies are widely recognized, dozens of large space objects are still left every year in critical orbital regions.
Progress can be made by advancing technology to ensure spaceflight safety. For example, the European Space Agency s Space Safety Programme is developing solutions that make disposal and energy passivation actions more fail-safe(有自动防故障功能的). “Deorbiting kits” will provide remaining energy and communication to ensure disposal of a spacecraft even after it stops working. A new field of “design-to-demise” will aim to replace critical components with less heat-resistant materials.
An internationally binding(有约束力的) system for the management of debris and space traffic is hanging. Thus far, space missions have been supervised on the national level only, and states have been encouraged to translate the non-binding space debris guidelines into national regulations. Furthermore, the implementation of space debris decrease requirements should be tracked, following internationally binding principles.
32.What will make the traffic jam in space severer
A.The space agency.
B.Satellite groups.
C.Broadband services.
D.Revolutionary connectivity.
33.Why did the experts make the strategies mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To end the mission in the space system.
B.To stop the objects from exploding in space.
C.To make the object re-enter the atmosphere.
D.To keep the objects in the critical orbital regions.
34.Which statement could the author agree with
A.Every country must have its own guidelines.
B.The international principle has been widely recognized.
C.Information about the space mission should not be shared.
D.Less heat-resistant materials for spacecraft should be used.
35.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To introduce the satellite infrastructure.
B.To call on people to focus on the internationally binding system.
C.To convey some helpful solutions to congestion in space.
D.To explain why low latency broadband services increase space traffic.

If you feel discouraged because of your plain looking, here are some practical ways that you can rethink your own appearance self-esteem(自信).
Throw away conventional, media-defined ideas of beauty. 36 , but you can change your own. Don t focus on the beauty you see in ads but, instead, on the beauty you see in the real-life people you admire.
Define yourself by how you do rather than how you look. Make your self-esteem based on your inner, not outer qualities. Focus on what you like about your abilities, personality and perspective on the world. These almost always show improvement over time. 37 .
38 . Be concerned about your body s shape; be concerned about how your body functions are. Engage in enough exercise and sensible eating to get in shape, but not to the point of trying to force yourself to follow the image of a fashion model.
Use others as a sounding board. You may think your nose is huge, but those who care about you may find the very features that bother you the most lovely. If you feel that you “look funny” or “look fat”, ask your nearest and dearest. 39 , saying that you don t need all that makeup or shapewear to be the person they love.
To sum up, changing our society s views on attractiveness won t be easy. 40 , and you will eventually define your identity in terms that allow you to gain fulfillment that lasts.
A.Focus on keeping healthy
B.Be concerned about how you feel inside
C.They may, surprisingly, give positive ideas
D.Shifts in our viewpoint can make no difference
E.So work your way through the tips listed above
F.You re not going to change society s definition of beauty
G.And they are often more changeable than facial or bodily features

Most people think that procrastination (拖延症) is a negative habit. But people like me who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our “slower” approach to getting tasks done.
I m the only one who has procrastination in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the “do it right now” gift. They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying “Don t put off until tomorrow what you can do today,” “No way!” I responded, confidently presenting my research as a defense. It says people procrastinate when they need to solve a problem or commit to a topic or project. In these cases, delaying a decision can be beneficial. This is because our minds continue to reflect on problems even when we are not actively thinking about them, which could lead to more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My method of getting things done was just as good as my sister s...or so I thought.
At school we d been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment my teacher Mr. Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners receive extra credits, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. “I don t have a clue how I could get it done,” my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn t say anything. Not because I shared his anxiety—but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn t give it a second thought for weeks.
Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project.

That taught me a great lesson.

A
根据Teotihuacán部分中的最后一句尤其是其中的“Much of the city s history is still a mystery(这座城市的许多历史仍然是一个谜)”可知,Teotihuacán的许多历史仍然未知,需要进一步探索。故选A。
根据Petra部分中的“Petra was occupied by Rome in 106 AD(公元106年,Petra被罗马占领)”和Ctesiphon部分中的“it was conquered by Rome, and then by the Sassanid Empire(它先是被罗马攻克,然后又被拜占庭帝国攻克)”可知,Petra和Ctesiphon的共同点是都曾被罗马打败。故选C。
B
故选A。
Initially, I was at a loss without my beloved electric piano.
Throughout my time at the private school, I was determined to find every available piano room on campus.
To my surprise, she was impressed by my progress and offered valuable feedback on how to improve my technique.
Whenever I feel discouraged, I look at the gleaming keys of my new upright piano and remember the valuable lesson I learned.

One possible version:
Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project. In panic I hastily and quickly glued together what I pulled out from our recycle bin, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result looked miserable. Several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed constructions. They used materials like clay, wood and so on and were highly praised by Mr. Smith. When I saw their models, I felt even more embarrassed about mine. It was obvious that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had.
That taught me a great lesson. I learnt from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until tomorrow. As a result, not only did I finish my tasks on time, but I also felt better because I didn t have to panic at the last minute. At the end of the semester, my work was chosen by Mr. Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done on time instead of being a procrastinator really counted.
