Until 13, Parker Liautaud was an ordinary kid. That changed after he met the polar explorer Robert Swan. They began an email correspondence which turned into a friendship that eventually saw the then 14-year-old invited to join a trip to the Antarctic. He said yes almost instantly. Friends and family, to whom he d so far shown no particular interest in outdoor activities, particularly polar ones, were thrown into total confusion. He ate lots of chicken, spent a long time in the gym, and proved them wrong.
The following year, Liautaud put forward a more ambitious plan: to become the youngest-ever person to go to the North Pole. He found a new partner, Doug Stoup, and through a mixture of charm and luck raised the roughly $150,000 needed for the record attempt. Then disaster struck. The early months of the year, when the two set out, were among the warmest on record. The North Pole, which is essentially a location on a constantly-floating collection of ice sheets, became inaccessible, surrounded by pieces of uncovered sea.
A trip which had been intended to raise awareness of melting ice caps was delayed by melting ice caps. “We would get up, battling against these difficult conditions for 150 hours, and then wake up the next morning and find that we were further away from the Pole than we d started the previous morning,” he said. After 14 days trying, they admitted defeat.
Liautaud came home and decided to try again the next spring. Conditions were cold but perfect, and he and Stoup reached the Pole in no time. While it might not have made Liautaud the youngest North-Poler, the success did fulfil his original intention, giving him a platform to continue promotion against climate change, through his campaigning website. His view is that it s his generation that must make the greatest effort to reduce carbon emissions. He has already contributed to research projects carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency and will soon set up two stations to record weather data.

25.What prevented Liautaud and Stoup from reaching the North Pole
A.The severe weather. B.The lack of ice sheets.
C.The failure of equipment. D.The poor financial support.
26.Why was Liautaud determined to go to the North Pole
A.To push his physical limits.
B.To become an Internet celebrity.

Even before Molly Johnson-Jones graduated from Oxford University in 2015, she felt professional pressure to land a “prestigious (享有声望的)” job in a high-powered industry. She says she and her university friends felt there were professions that carried prestige—particularly the fields of finance, medicine and law. That s why Johnson-Jones ended up in investment banking once she graduated, even though it didn t feel like quite the right fit.
These kinds of “very traditional industries” have indeed carried prestige, says Jonah Stillman, co-founder of GenGuru, a firm that focuses on different generations in the workplace. As Generation Z joins the workforce, however, experts and younger workers say what s considered a “prestigious” job may be expanding. Some younger workers do still report making money is prestigious, especially as the cost of living shoots up, and that working for certain firms or in specific industries can make a career. But many also place equal stress on other elements, such as values of the company, flexibility, and freedom from long, intense work hours.
And some data indicates that Generation Z is indeed turning to more meaningful work. April 2023 data from LinkedIn of more than 7,000 global workers shows 64% of Generation Zers in the UK, Germany and Ireland now consider it important to work for companies that share their values. The data also shows these young workers regard work-life balance and career growth as top draws for potential workplaces.
This change in Generation Z s attitude towards work may be in part because mechanisms (机制) behind finding jobs and seeing other possible career paths are changing, says Josh Graff, managing director of EMEA and LATAM at LinkedIn. With a greater number of jobs being posted online, “we have much more access to information today than we did when we were applying for a job 20-plus years ago...This allows us to have much better visibility into a wealth of roles,” he says. “That change in the workplace, in the workforce...is leading people to understand there s a wider range of options out there.”
28.Why did Johnson-Jones end up in investment banking
A.She had a passion for finance.
B.She wanted to make a lot of money.
C.She found herself well suited for the career.
D.She felt pressure to take up a highly-regarded job.
29.What is the main idea of paragraph 2
A.Making money is still the main concern of younger workers.
B.Generation Zers are not interested in traditional “prestigious” jobs.
C.The definition of a “prestigious” job is changing for younger workers.
D.Short-time work is still considered prestigious for younger workers.
30.What do most Generation Zers in the UK, Germany and Ireland consider important when it comes to work
A.Whether they can have a good job title.
B.Whether they can receive a good salary.
C.Whether companies values are in line with theirs.
D.Whether they have enough opportunities to socialize.
31.What may be contributing to the change in Generation Z s attitude towards work
A.The changing job search methods.
B.A lack of high-paying jobs in traditional industries.
C.Growing stress on companies social responsibility.
D.Increased access to information about potential career paths.
D
On Friday, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) collapsed and was taken over by federal regulators, marking one of the largest bank failures since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. California s banking regulators shut down SVB and effectively gave control of the bank to the FDIC, which created a new entity(实体) to oversee it. With a 40-year history, SVB served many companies, and it played an important role in the technology industry, successfully competing with bigger-name banks.
SVB s business boomed as tech companies did well during the pandemic. However, the technology industry recently faced difficulties, and many clients withdrew money. To fulfill these withdrawals, SVB sold part of its bond holdings(持有债券) at a loss of $1.8 billion. The Federal Reserve s(美联储) sharp rise in the interest rate also affected bonds and stocks. Then SVB decided it wanted to reduce its bond portfolio(债券投资组合) to avoid further losses.
But that announcement spooked the bank s clients, who got worried and then proceeded to withdraw even more money from the bank—a textbook definition of a bank run. The bank s stock price(股价) fell by 60% on Thursday, and continued to sink overnight. Trading was halted, and the FDIC took over SVB.
While concerns emerged about the banking sector, share prices of major banks like JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America dropped by around 5%. Investors worried that other banks, particularly smaller ones, might experience similar withdrawals. However, by Friday, fears regarding the broader banking sector had eased. Experts argued that SVB s situation was unusual and should not impact other regional banks.
The FDIC-created entity, Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara, oversees SVB. Insured deposits (存款), typically up to $250,000, will be accessible by Monday. Uninsured deposits face uncertainty, with the FDIC offering an “advance dividend (预付股息)” and a “receivership certificate” accounting for the uninsured funds. The regulator has not clarified what this means for uninsured depositors. Investors will continue monitoring any potential impact on other banks.
32.What do we learn about Silicon Valley Bank
A.It is the world s first bank that has failed.
B.It has already been taken over by the FDIC.
C.It failed because of the severe situation during the pandemic.
D.It collapsed as a result of competition with the famous banks.
33.What does the underlined word “spooked” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Calmed. B.Inspired. C.Panicked. D.Persuaded.
34.What is the direct cause of SVB s failure
A.Loss of the bond portfolio.
B.The competition with other banks.
C.The reduction of the Federal Reserve s interest rate.
D.Withdrawals from a large number of customers.
35.What can be learned in the passage
A.All small banks will be impacted sooner or later.
B.The banking industry is facing enormous challenge.
C.Those who have uninsured deposits will lose everything.
D.SVB s deposit users are likely to be affected by its collapse.

The cost of living crisis means we re all having to budget more carefully, as bills continue to rise and things become more expensive. If you re struggling to manage your money, there is a technique called the 50-30-20 rule.
This rule aims to make sure all your essentials and bills are paid, while you can also leave money for saving. The 50-30-20 rule isn t for everyone though. 36
You can come up with your own ratios (比例) based on your spending and situation. The aim of the 50-30-20 rule is that you spend 50% of your money on your “needs”. 37 The final 20% of your money is then put into paying off the debt beyond minimum payments, or into savings.
If your monthly income was £ 1,500 after tax, you might spend: £750 on needs, £450 on wants and £300 on your financial goals. 38 For example, you may be spending more than 50% of your income on bills.
39 You should always make sure your bills and minimum debt payments are paid first, and then work out how much you have left for “wants” and savings. You may decide to put more into savings or paying off the debt beyond minimum payments than you would do on your “wants”.
The 50-30-20 budgeting method is trending on the Internet right now. Following this simple method for budgeting will offer people the fun and freedom they want while they are still being responsible for their money. 40 In this case, it s worth checking for any unnecessary spending that could be cut back on.
A.First of all, add up all your bills.
B.Again, this may not work for everyone.
C.Then you would spend 30% of your money on your “wants”.
D.It all depends on your income and how much you can afford to save.
E.Some may find the essentials are taking up over 50% of their budget.
F.When employing the 50-30-20 rule, you should pay attention to the priority.
G.That is why more and more people begin to use this rule to manage their money.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Karl was Fred s son. When his son was little, Fred s wife passed away, so a mountainous responsibility landed on Fred s shoulders. Fred was fond of and cared about his son so much that he raised his son with all his heart and soul. He taught him to walk, talk, read and write. He also taught him how to be a true and moral man. When Karl came home with an injury due to falling off his bike or something else, it would hurt Fred s heart more than it would hurt the boy. Whenever Karl went down with a fever, Fred would sit beside him day and night, barely sleeping a wink (合眼). He always supported Karl in every aspect. Gradually, Karl grew up to become an adult.
How deeply Fred loved his son! However, Fred was unprepared for the day when his beloved son Karl told him he would leave and start his own business in a new city.
“But, Karl, you are too young to start a business,” Fred warned his son. “You still have a long way to go. I think you can help me manage the cafe my grandma left to me first. This way, I d be able to teach you more about business.” But Karl was stubborn and wouldn t follow Fred s advice. “Dad, I am not a kid anymore, so allow me to determine my life. OK ” said Karl. One week later, Karl packed his things and left for the new city, leaving the sad and worried father behind.
Three months passed. One night, Fred got a call from his son. It was strange because Karl seldom called him up after he left for the new city. “Dad, I should have followed your suggestions and stayed at home. I went bankrupt (破产的) and I am in debt now,” Karl said. “I knew this would happen someday,” Fred painfully thought. He planned to help his son and made one of his most difficult choices. “Don t worry, my son. Luckily, you will succeed to (继承) a huge amount of money from your uncle, soon,” Fred told Karl.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
“ Oh, I am so fortunate,” said Karl.

On his way back home, Karl was wondering how his father was.

You needn t worry because you will get a large sum of money from him soon. It will help solve your problems. Now, go to sleep peacefully,” Fred said and then he hung up the phone. Hearing that, Karl felt relieved and hopeful. A week later, Karl indeed got a huge amount of money. He paid off all his debts with the money and then decided to go back to visit his father.
On his way back home, Karl was wondering how his father was. However, when Karl arrived at Fred s house and knocked at the door, an unknown man answered the door. It turned out that the man was the new owner of the house. A neighbour he met told him that Fred had sold his cafe and house. Karl realized that it was his father that helped him, not the imaginary uncle. He looked for his father everywhere and eventually found him in a shelter for the homeless. Guilty and heartbroken, Karl determined to work hard and learn from others so that he could buy the cafe and the house back. Three years later, Karl finally made it with his efforts and Fred s support.
