The Four Great Grottoes of China

Mogao Grottoes, or the Caves of a Thousand Buddhas(千佛洞), are located in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, on the Silk Road. The murals(壁画) and Buddha figures(佛像)in these caves have great artistic value. In 1987, the Mogao Grottoes were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Over the years, the Mogao Caves have faced challenges such as natural erosion and human damage. To ensure that the future generations can also appreciate this magnificent heritage, there are many effective measures being taken to preserve these treasures.

Chen Lei is a senior teacher who takes photos of old buildings in Wuhan in order to preserve the city’s cultural heritages.
Every day, Chen Lei takes his camera and weaves in and out of the old building blocks. Besides, he interviews old people to write stories about the buildings. Over the years, he has already taken more than 5,000 photos. When he is free, he visits schools to tell students about the ways of preserving cultural heritage.
