These days, football is one of the most popular sports in the world.Given that Neil Armstrong
wanted to take a football to the Moon,ve could even say that it is also the most popular sport in this world! The history of the game goes back to Ancient China. It was then known as cuju. Football as we know it todaystarted in Great Britain, where the game was given new rules.
That football is such a simple game to play is perhaps the basis of its popularity. It is also a
gamethat is very cheap to play. You don't need expensive equipment;even the ball doesn't have to cost much money. All over the world you can see kids playing to their hearts'content with a ball made of plasticbags;justlike Pelé did when he was a boy.
Another factor behind footbal's global popularity is the creativity and excitement on the field.
It is fun enough to attract millions of people. You donot haveto be a fanto recognize the skill of professional players-how they use their bodies to pass, score and defend can be amazing to see- or to feel the excitement of a game.
What's more, football has become one of the best ways forpeople to communicate:it breaks
down walls and brings people together on and off the feld. For example, the famous football game on Christmas Day 1914.World War I had broken out months before, but British and German soldiers put down their guns and played football together -one moment of peace to remember during years of conflict.
"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death."said Bill Shankly, the famous
footballer and manager."I can assure you it is more important than that"This might sound funny, but oneonly has to thinkabout the Earth to realize that ourplanet isshaped like a football.

Parents of teenagers often view their children's friends with distrust, worrying that theirchildren
will be pushed by their peers(同龄人)into doing something foolish or even dangerous.Their wories hold water. In a previous study, psychologist Laurence Steinberg found that:teenage driver with a same-age passenger in the car is at higher risk oftraffic accidents than onedriving alone orwith

an adult.
In the following years,Steinberg examined why tcens were more likely to take risks in the company of othertcenagers. In a later study,by scanning(扫描)the brains of 40 teens and adults Stcinberg foundthe brains of tcenagers, but not adults, showed greater activity in two regions connccted with rewards when they were being observed by same-age peers. The reward systems of the brain are activated whenever people experience something rewarding, like eating a nice-tasting food, which make them feel satisfied. In thiscase, rewards are greater for teens, which cncourages them to scck higher-risk experiences.
But Stcinberg thought pcer pressure might also have its positive side.In the latest study, Steinberg's team used a card game to rescarch how peers affect the way young people gather and use infomnation. It involved 10I teenage boys who played either alone or with three peers. They chose cards from four decks(牌堆) :two had "good"cards, and two "bad"ones.Players with pcers were more willing to takerisks, tryingto find out which could help them to win.The results showed that teens playing with their pcers learn faster and achieve better performance on the task thanthoseplaying alone.
Now somc experts suggest that we should take advantage of how much teens care about their
peers to improve education."Risk taking in an education is an important skill that belps usmove
forward and be creative,"wrote Sarah-Jayne Blakemore,a professor at University College
London.
32.Whatdo the underlinedwords "hold water"in paragraph 1 mean
A.Make sense. B.Face doubts. C.Bring relief. D.Start debates.

A.Inabilitytotell right from wrong B.A sense of satisfaction.

A.It starts fights betweenthem
B.It inspiresthem to question
C.It helpsthem to learn better.
D.It weakens their independence
35.What would Blakemoreprobably suggestteachersdo in the classroom

Wonderful English Club Activity
Last Friday, I took part in an English club activity organized by our school, a truly memorable experience.
We started with a lively debate on "The Impact of Social Media on Our Daily Life," where everyone shared their views passionately. Then, we watched "The Battle at Lake Changjin," leading to rich discussions about its themes. This event made English learning fun and broadened my horizons.
I left with a sense of fulfillment, eager for more great English club experiences. I can't wait for the next one!

范文一:
Later Dad came in with excitement. The smile on his face lit up the whole room. The moment
he saw Karie, he asked with joy, “Honey, how is your spelling test ” With those words, he stroked her hair affectionately. So embarrassed was Karie to look into Dad ’s eyes that she lowered her head, unable to utter a word. Sensing something unusual, Dad asked gently,“What ’s wrong, baby ”Karie couldn ’t hide her feelings any longer and burst into tears upon hearing this. Then she told her father
what had happened. Instead of criticizing her, Dad comforted her and let her make her own decision. 高一英语试卷 第 1 页 共 9 页
Torn between the honor and the truth, she had a restless night, tossing and turning on bed.
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. After pacing up and down restlessly in front of the teacher ’s office for a while, she finally gathered courage and plodded in. The teacher was a little surprised to see her. “Hi, Karie you come so early today. ”“Ms. McCormack, I don ’t deserve the prize because I made an error which you didn ’t find, ” said Karie with her face flushed red. She then handed the paper and the prize to the teacher. Looking at the paper for a while, the
teacher smiled, “You did spell a word wrong, but the present still belongs to you. It ’s not for your perfect score but for your honesty. ” Hearing that, Karie grinned with relief, a wave of happiness flooding over her.
范文二:
Later Dad came in with excitement.“Where ’s your spelling test, Karie ”Dad asked eagerly. Karie looked away from her father. Anyhow, she reluctantly went to her room and pulled out the test paper. Dad fixed his eyes on the paper, a pleasant smile lifting the corner of his mouth. “I ’m proud of you, sweetie. We need to celebrate it tonight. ” Karie pretended to be smiling all the time.
Meanwhile, a sense of guilt rose inside her. Feeling she didn ’t deserve the prize, she had a sleepless night for the first time in her life.
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. Ms. McCormack was unlocking the classroom. “You ’re an early bird, ” Ms. McCormack said. Karie ’s hands trembled. She handed her teacher the spelling paper and the dictionary. “I can ’t keep this. I misspelled ‘honestly ’ and you didn ’t catch it. ”For a moment, Ms. McCormack stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary.
Then picking up her pen, she crossed out the word “perfect ” and wrote “honest ” before returning the dictionary to Karie. "keep this. But for honesty."

W: Catherine Hettinger, a chemical engineer, was first believed to be its creator, but then we found that an IT professor named Scott McCoskery was the actual inventor.
M: Okay. Now it’s time for a commercial break. More with Margaret Seabrook in a moment. Text 10 (194 词) 缺少睡眠
M: Hello, everybody. I’m Reid. Today I will discuss the effect of sleep on school students. Firstly, whether a lack of sleep affects teenagers The answer is “Yes” . Many teenagers are getting little sleep and there are concerns that this could have a serious long-term effect on their body health and spirits, but we aren’t sure about that now. However, one study has clearly shown that high school students getting low grades also get on average one hour less sleep than students getting high grades. Then why aren’t teenagers getting enough sleep I think they spend too much time on TV and computer games. So how can teenagers fall asleep easier Well, don’t have any soft drinks or any drink that contain chocolate before sleeping. Reading a book or listening to a story, rather than music, should help your brain to relax.
It would be better for schools to stay open longer so that pupils can do homework before they get home. Another thing that some schools have tried successfully is to begin the school day half an hour later and end the school day half an hour later, and I really recommend that.

Wonderful English Club Activity
Last Friday, I took part in an English club activity organized by our school, a truly memorable
experience.
We started with a lively debate on "The Impact of Social Media on Our Daily Life," where
everyone shared their views passionately. Then, we watched "The Battle at Lake Changjin," leading
to rich discussions about its themes. This event made English learning fun and broadened my
horizons.
I left with a sense of fulfillment, eager for more great English club experiences. I can't wait for
the next one!

范文一:
Later Dad came in with excitement. The smile on his face lit up the whole room. The moment
he saw Karie, he asked with joy,“Honey, how is your spelling test ”With those words, he stroked
her hair affectionately. So embarrassed was Karie to look into Dad’s eyes that she lowered her head,
unable to utter a word. Sensing something unusual, Dad asked gently,“What’s wrong, baby ”Karie
couldn’t hide her feelings any longer and burst into tears upon hearing this. Then she told her father
what had happened. Instead of criticizing her, Dad comforted her and let her make her own decision.

Torn between the honor and the truth, she had a restless night, tossing and turning on bed.
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. After pacing up and down restlessly
in front of the teacher’s office for a while, she finally gathered courage and plodded in. The teacher
was a little surprised to see her. “Hi, Karie you come so early today. ”“Ms. McCormack, I don’t
deserve the prize because I made an error which you didn’t find,” said Karie with her face flushed
red. She then handed the paper and the prize to the teacher. Looking at the paper for a while, the
teacher smiled, “You did spell a word wrong, but the present still belongs to you. It’s not for your
perfect score but for your honesty. ” Hearing that, Karie grinned with relief, a wave of happiness
flooding over her.
范文二:
Later Dad came in with excitement.“Where’s your spelling test, Karie ”Dad asked eagerly.
Karie looked away from her father. Anyhow, she reluctantly went to her room and pulled out the test
paper. Dad fixed his eyes on the paper, a pleasant smile lifting the corner of his mouth. “I’m proud
of you, sweetie. We need to celebrate it tonight.” Karie pretended to be smiling all the time.
Meanwhile, a sense of guilt rose inside her. Feeling she didn’t deserve the prize, she had a sleepless
night for the first time in her life.
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual.Ms. McCormack was unlocking the
classroom.“You’re an early bird,”Ms. McCormack said. Karie’s hands trembled. She handed her
teacher the spelling paper and the dictionary. “I can’t keep this. I misspelled ‘honestly’ and you
didn’t catch it.”For a moment, Ms. McCormack stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary.
Then picking up her pen, she crossed out the word“perfect” and wrote“honest” before returning
the dictionary to Karie. "keep this. But for honesty."
