【答案】Dear chief editor,
I am Li Hua, a senior one student. Having an interest in the position in your poster and faithfully tempted to become a member of the school newspaper, I’m writing to recommend myself to you.
Initially, I have a good command of English, enabling me to express myself freely in English. Moreover, I used to be a journalist of the school’s newspaper when in junior high school. That is why I am skilled in writing. The reports written by me were often praised by my fellow schoolmates and teachers, which pushed me to grow as an outgoing, independent and sociable person. Most importantly, I am curious as well as enthusiastic about everything happening in and around our campus, so I am firmly convinced I can be qualified for the job.
I would appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration. Looking forward to your favorable reply.
Yours.
Li Hua

Families are taking down their decorations and throwing out their tees when Christmas has come to end. However, one man in Texas is reusing the trees for a good cause. Canes (拐杖) for Veterans (退伍军人) Central Texas, which was set up by Jamie Willis, makes free canes out of waste wood for veterans in need. Willis started the organization when he found himself in need of a strong cane, he told CBS News.
Jamie Willis had served in the army for eight years, but was left disabled. He would use a cane to get around, but didn’t like the one he received from Veterans Affairs. He decided to ask for a suitable replacement (替代品) from the organization Free Canes for Veterans. Oscar Morris, who ran the organization, apologized to Willis because they were all handed out.
He then considered making one for himself. Luckily, with the help of Morris, Willis made his first cane. Morris encouraged him to make another cane for someone else in need, which gave Willis an idea. He started the Canes for Veterans Central Texas.
During its first year, Willis simply collected thrown-away trees and wood. Now, after getting some attention, Willis has received many donated Christmas trees from neighbors and natives. Since 2016, Willis and his team have made 222 canes for veterans in need. He’s even started to make the canes with slogans (标语) and designs chosen by the veterans, making each one meaningful to those veterans.
“It’s a great feeling,” he told CBS News. “It takes their eyes off their so called disability and it takes their eyes to the cane. Because when people look at a person with just a metal cane, everyone just wonders what happens,” Willis added. “But now, when they’re walking around with canes that we make, they’re looking at the cane, a piece of artwork.”
4. What inspired Willis to start Canes for Veterans Central Texas
A. His interest in woodworking. B. His own need for a suitable cane.
C. His experience in the army. D. His desire to help disabled people.
5 What contributed to Willis’ success of making 222 canes
A. The support from the local people. B. The attention of Willis’ neighbours.
C. The cooperation with the veterans. D. The collection of thrown-away wood.
6. Why are the canes meaningful for veterans
A. Because they are charged free.
B. Because they are designed by themselves.
C. Because they are donated from neighbors.
D. Because they are made from recycled materials.
7. What can we learn about the canes from the last paragraph
A. They serve as a source of pride for veterans.
B. They provide a solution for movement problems.
C. They are a symbol of community support and care.
D. They help change focus from disabilities to the canes.

Thanks to warmer weather, flowers are springing up everywhere, from fields to forest to even our food. With the spread on salads, across cocktails, or on cupcakes, flowers are chefs’ favorite tool to uplift their art.
“Eatable flowers can add aroma (香味) and colour to any dish,” Chris Amendola, owner chef of Foraged in Station North. “I prefer to add flowers to my plates because they really make so many dishes stand out.”
As the name of his restaurant shows, the James Beard-nominated (提名) chef searches for many of the menu’s ingredients, mushrooms, pawpaws, ramps, and wild blueberries. And while every season yields its own gifts, the biggest richness comes in spring and summer — when Amendola walks in the woods to look for plenty of flowers that he can use in his dishes.
Amendola first learned to find flowers while working for famous searcher Sean Brock at McCrady’s in Charleston, SC. “We were on the farm and Sean said, ‘Let’s do a walk in the woods,’” recalls Amendola. “I didn’t realize I could search anywhere. Ever since then, I’ve been spending time in the woods.”
While eatable flowers are a more recent cooking style, they’re also a very old one. In ancient Rome, Greece and China, flowers were used not only in cooking but for medicinal purposes.
Unlike mushroom searching, which can be dangerous, searching for flowers is relatively easy. “Eating flowers is generally safe,” says Amendola, “though you should know what you are eating. One of my favorite flowers are the wood violets (紫罗兰), which come in purple, pink and orange. When people eat them at Foraged, they recognize them as something growing on their own front gardens. They’ll say, ‘I couldn’t imagine I could eat these.’ I love those moments.”
8. Why does Chris Amendola like to add flowers to dishes
A. To save money. B. To encourage flower planting.
C. To make dishes last long. D. To improve the flavour and colour.
9. What does the underlined word “yields” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Investigates. B. Recognizes. C. Produces. D. Exchanges.
10. What can be learned about eatable flowers
A. They have a long history. B. They are easy to grow in home gardens.
C. They are difficult to find. D. They are used to treat most illnesses.
11. What do eaters think of the dishes with wood violets
A. Delightful. B. Amazing. C. Ordinary. D. Dangerous.
D
There’s a best time of day to work out that may lead to better results. Claire Zulkey, a 44-year-old freelance writer from Chicago, follows a morning routine of getting her kids off to school, watching TV, and completing a full-body workout. In contrast, 32-year-old graphic designer Meghan Cully prefers evening workouts after her full day. But is one time of day better than the other
A small study out of Skidmore College examined the advantages of morning vs. evening exercise for both women and men. Paul, professor for health at Skidmore, led the study. “We had the groups divided into evening and morning groups,” he says. “We found women and men answered differently to different types of exercise depending on the time of the day, which surprised us.”
The study showed that for women who want to lower blood pressure (血压), the risk of heart disease or reduce fat, morning exercise works best. Those women hoping for upper body muscle (肌肉) gains or mood (心情) improvement should consider evening exercise. For the men, the findings were somewhat different: Evening exercise lowers blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, and feelings of tiredness. But similar to women, they burn more fat with morning exercise.
“For many people the best time to exercise will depend on their chronotype,” says Heisz, author of Mooethe Body, Heal the Mind.
“Chronotype is your body’s natural habit to sleep at a certain time — it’s what decides whether you’re a night owl or an early bird. For the 25% of the population that considers themselves a night owl, getting both enough sleep and enough exercise can be difficult,” adds Heisz.
He continues, “Sleep — which provides your body the necessary time to recover (恢复) and make gains from exercise — should always be the first choice. When it comes to exercise, regardless of research on the advantages of certain exercises at particular times of the day, your results will not be good if it doesn’t allow enough time for sleep.”
12. What can both women and men get by doing morning exercise
A. A fat loss. B. A lower blood pressure.
C. A good mood. D. A smaller risk of heart disease.
13. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The time of sleep. B. The advantage of exercise.
C. The development of habit. D. The explanation of a term.
14. What does Heisz believe is important to get good results of exercise
A. Light food. B. Plenty of water.
C. Enough sleep. D. Lots of exercise.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The Right Hour for Health B. The Advantages of Exercise
C. The Best Time of a Day to Sleep D. The Best Time of a Day to Exercise
