People often think that scientific discoveries come from the geniuses like Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein. Such a view overlooks the efforts of lesser-known pioneers. Also, popular belief holds that the sudden idea is the key to making scientific breakthroughs, as if it just appears in someone’s mind.
This opinion might be partially true. It doesn’t accurately represent the true nature of scientific breakthroughs. Apart from, the great figures such as Darwin and Einstein, whose contributions are rightly recognized — we believe innovation is largely a trial-and-error process, where two steps forward may sometimes come with one step back or even more steps to the right or left.
Take John Nicholson, a lesser-known scientist from the 1910s. He was a mathematical physicist who suggested the idea of ‘proto-elements’ in space. By mixing different weights of these atoms, he could recover the weights of the elements in the periodic table. Though proto-elements don’t actually exist, Nicholson’s wild ideas led him to propose a new theory about atomic structure. Niels Bohr, the Nobel prize-winning father of modern atomic theory, later built on this idea to develop his famous model of the atom.
What can we learn from this story Science is always evolving, similar to the evolution of animal species. Just random or unexpected changes of ideas may open the door for advances in science. Support for this idea can be seen in many areas. For example, in US horse racing, the ‘acey-deucy’ stirrup placement, where the rider’ s left foot is placed lower than the right foot, provides a speed advantage on oval tracks. It was created by a little-known rider named Jackie Westrope. Had Westrope done careful research to develop this technique No. He had a leg injury that prevented him from fully bending his left knee. This change just happened to improve his left-hand turning performance. As a result, many riders quickly adopted the acey-deucy style, which is still used in racing today.
Many other examples show science progress often comes from mistakes, accidents, or pure luck. It’s time to abandon the naive beliefs of genius and explore the true causes of creativity.
4.What is the purpose of paragraph 1
A.To support specific ideas.
B.To describe a common belief.

C.They are exceptions to the usual rule.
D.Their achievements deserve greater recognition.
6.What do we know about the idea of Nicholson
A.It made him famous as an important scientist.
B.People only fully understood it later in history.
C.Other scientists were initially doubtful about it.
D.It paved the way for someone else’ s breakthrough.
7.What is most interesting about the ‘acey-deucy’ stirrup adjustment
A.Why it was made.

The field of anti-ageing medicine has exploded in recent years due to discoveries about the fundamental biology of ageing which are translated into experimental therapies (疗法) . The latest fountain of youth to pour from the lab comes in the form of vaccines (疫苗) against age-related conditions— cancer, heart disease, dementia and more. The first of these could be available by the end of the decade. All-purpose anti-ageing injections are also in development.
The upsides of such vaccines are clear. Anything that limits the impact of age-related conditions on people who live into old age—not to mention on the loved ones who often end up caring for them—has to be welcomed. They also promise to lessen effect on the increasingly societal and economic costs of these diseases.
But as with all anti-ageing interventions, there are potential downsides too. If millions of people live significantly longer, we risk a population explosion on a planet whose resources are already overstretched. If the vaccines merely delay the beginning of age-related conditions, they will only postpone the burden on people and society. And as Nobel prizewinner Venki Ramakrishnan told us earlier this year. a long-lived society is likely to be an unmoving one. These are familiar fears. The common answer is that the goal is increased healthspan. That means people living for longer, free from the diseases of old age, then suddenly declining and dying.
We won’t know the-outcome until: the therapies have been widely used, at which point it will be too late to put the genie back in the bottle. But there is really no turning back anyway. If vaccines and other anti-ageing therapies work and are affordable, they will be used. Besides, nobody would argue that innovations like antibiotics, vaccines and advanced diagnostics were a bad idea even though they marked the beginning of our era of age-related diseases. Similarly, we shouldn’t fear life-saving medical advances on the basis of unintended consequences. If we can make lies longer and less painful, the downsides are a price worth paying.
8.Why is the field of anti-ageing medicine growing rapidly
A.The biology of ageing is better applied. B.The trend of healthy lifestyle is rising.
C.The demand for longer life is increasing. D.The number of elderly is rising globally.
9.How do anti-ageing vaccines benefit society
A.By increasing the workforce. B.By curing people of diseases.
C.By boosting economic growth. D.By reducing healthcare expense.
10.What does the underlined phrase “put the genie back in the bottle” mean
A.To stop the process of ageing. B.To erase the impact of the therapies.
C.To create a new medical breakthrough. D.To delay the development of technology.
11.What is the best title for this article
A.Can Anti-Ageing Medicine Really Work
B.What Is the Risk of Anti-Ageing Medicine
C.How to Stay Young with Anti-Ageing Medicine
D.Is It Worthwhile Using Anti-Ageing Medicine
D
With an abundance of sun and wind, Spain is positioning itself as Europe’s future leader in green hydrogen production to clean up heavy industries. But some energy experts express caution because this process relies on massive availability of zero-carbon electricity.
Green hydrogen is created when renewable energy sources power an electrical current that runs through water, separating its hydrogen and oxygen molecules (分子). The process doesn’t produce planet-warming carbon dioxide, but less than 0.1% of global hydrogen production is currently created in this way.
The separated hydrogen can be used in the production of steel, ammonia (氨) and chemical products, all of which require industrial processes that are harder to stop fossil fuels. Hydrogen also can be used as a transportation fuel, which could one day transform the highly polluting shipping and aviation sectors.
Spain’s large, windswept and thinly populated territory receives more than 2,500 hours of sunshine on average per year, providing ideal conditions for wind and solar energy, and therefore green hydrogen production.
“If you look at where hydrogen is going to be produced in Europe in the next million years, it’s in two countries, Spain and Portugal,” said Thierry Lepercq, the founder and president of HyDeal Ambition, an industry platform bringing together 30 companies. “Hydrogen is the new oil.”
Lepercq is working with companies like Spanish gas pipeline corporation Enagas and global steel giant ArcelorMittal to design an end-to-end model for hydrogen production, distribution and supply at a competitive price. Criticism has centered on green hydrogen’s higher cost compared with highly-polluting “gray hydrogen” drawn from natural gas. Lepercq argues that solar energy produced in Spain is priced low enough to compete.
Globally, Lepercq said, “Electricity is 20% of energy consumption. What about the 80% that is not electrified ... You need to replace those fossil fuels. Not in 50 years’ time. You need to replace them now.”
12. Why are some experts cautious about green hydrogen production in Spain
A. It needs large amounts of sun and wind. B. It has an effect on heavy industries.
C. It causes conflicts among countries. D. It uses lots of zero-carbon electricity.
13. What is the advantage of green hydrogen production in Spain
A. Ideal geographical conditions. B. The support from government.
C. Hydrogen production technology. D. Well-developed public transports.
14. What can be inferred about green hydrogen in Spain according to Lepercq
A. It is highly priced. B. It is easy to store.
C. It is competitive. D. It is highly-polluting.
15. What is the passage mainly about
A. Spain manages to use zero-carbon electricity.
B. Spain struggles to lead EU in heavy industry.
C. Spain takes the lead in preventing air pollution.
D. Spain replaces fossil fuel with green hydrogen.

Using Fitness to Find Happiness
With the rising concern of a sedentary lifestyle’s harmful impact on health and well-being, our school has taken active steps to organize a “Happy Fitness” campaign aimed at fostering a healthier lifestyle and a happier state of mind.
To launch this campaign, a series of activities such as fitness workshops and group exercises will be organized. We will invite professional fitness trainers to lead these activities, sharing their knowledge and skill sets, while providing participants with personalized training programs to help them get the most out of their efforts.
In my opinion, this campaign is a great initiative, as it will not only benefit individuals' physical health but will also help improve their mental health. I wholeheartedly support this campaign and believe it will be a catalyst for a healthier and happier student community.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
