La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol close to Valencia in Spain. It is claimed to be the biggest food fight in the world.
What Happens at La Tomatina
At around 11 am, many trucks carry more than one hundred tons of over-ripe tomatoes into the centre of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story-high wooden pole and reached the ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of a water gun. After one hour the fighting ends and the cleaning process begins.
The Rules of La Tomatina
Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants.
Do not tear other people’s T-shirts.
You must squeeze (捏碎) the tomatoes before throwing them.
As soon as you hear the second shot of the water gun, you must stop throwing tomatoes.
Useful Advice
Wear old shoes and clothes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. They will most likely end up damaged or incredibly dirty;
Don’t wear slippers. You may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle;
If you are not from Bunol, and you want to stay overnight, don’t forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance.
Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much as possible!

Chaudhary weaves (编织) together lengths of rope and grass collected from the nearby riverbank in her village, skillfully shaping the materials into a gift box while instructing a group of women to follow suit.
The ropes being used were once the lifeline for mountain climbers tackling Nepal’s mountains and were then cast away. Diverse measures to remove such discarded materials have rocketed since 2019, when the government launched Clean Mountain Campaign. Around 140,000 tons of waste were collected on Mt. Everest alone, which were handled accordingly, either securely buried or recycled.
Some waste is now finding fresh life, transformed by skilled hands like Chaudhary’s into items to sell, thanks to an initiative led by Acharya, an owner of a waste processing business and an advocate for sustainable waste management. She has been working with the cleaning campaign, aiming at mountains like Mt. Everest.
“Metal waste goes through the recycling process, but we weren’t capable of recycling these ropes and cooking gas cans,” Acharya says. It didn’t occur to her that the waste which couldn’t be recycled could be reused until she met Rai at an art exhibition and a solution emerged.
Rai, a businessman dealing in craftworks, helped connect Acharya with Chaudhary and her team of craftswomen in hopes of unlocking the economic value of the mountain waste. With flexible hours, the project gives the craftswomen an opportunity to earn money even as they maintain their household responsibilities.
“While this seems insignificant compared to waste in the mountains, it’s a start. We can’t supply sufficient raw material with waste sorting and cleaning processes taking plenty of time and money,” Acharya says, desperate to expand the program to involve more women and treat more waste. But progress has been slow. “We need investment to mechanize the cleaning and processing of waste in the initial phase to provide the crafting team with enough materials to meet their demand,” she adds.
24. What was the original use of the ropes mentioned in paragraph 2
A. Tools for tying up weeds.
B. Villagers’ basic necessities of life.
C. Raw materials for unique artworks.
D. Life-saving devices for mountaineers.
25. What inspired Acharya’s resolution of non-recyclable waste
A. A journey to the rural area. B. An encounter with a trader.
C. Information from a product launch. D. Attendance at an academic conference.
26. What does Acharya expect to do based on the last paragraph
A. Train more senior technicians. B. Obtain a better reputation.
C. Drop waste washing procedures. D. Bring in advanced equipment.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Chaudhary: An Eco-Minded Folk Artist
B. Nepali Women Are Turning Garbage into Crafts
C. Clean Mountain Campaign Has Already Taken Effect
D. A Headache: Mt. Everest Is Heavily Littered with Waste
C
That dinosaurs ate the mammals that ran beneath their feet is not in doubt. Now an extraordinary fossil newly described in Scientific Reports, unearthed by a team led by Gang Han at Hainan Vocational University of Science and Technology in China, shows that sometimes the tables were turned.
The fossil—dated to about 125 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period—was formed when a flow of boiling volcanic mud swallowed two animals seemingly locked in a life-and-death fight. The one on top is a mammal. This animal is a herbivorous species closely related to the Triceratops Animal interactions such as this are exceptionally rare in the fossil record.
One possibility is that the mammal was eating something already dead, other than hunting live prey. These days it is uncommon for small mammals to attack much larger animals. But it is not unheard of. And Dr. Han and his colleagues point out that those mammals which eat dead bodies typically leave tooth marks all over the bones of the animals. The dinosaur’s remains show no such marks. There is also a chance the fossil could be a fake. More and more convincing fakes have emerged, as this one did—though Dr. Han and his colleagues argue that the complexly connected nature of the skeletons (骨骼) makes that unlikely, too.
Assuming it is genuine, the discovery serves as a reminder that not all dinosaurs were enormous during the Cretaceous and not all mammals were tiny. From nose to tail, the dinosaur is just 1.2 meters long. The mammal is a bit under half a meter in length. Despite being half the size, the mammal has one paw firmly wrapped around one of its prey’s limbs, and another pulling on its jaw. It is biting down on the dinosaur’s chest, and has ripped off two of its ribs. Before they were interrupted, it seems that the mammal was winning.
28. Which idiom is closest in meaning to underlined part “the tables were turned” in paragraph 1
A. The fittest survives.
B. The hunters become hunted.
C. Fortune always favors the brave.
D. The truth will always come to light.
29. Why does the author mention the “tooth mark” in paragraph 3
A. To prove the fossil was fake.
B. To show the forming of the fossil.
C. To illustrate the process of hunting.
D. To suggest the dinosaur was hunted alive.
30. What makes Dr. Han think the fossil is genuine
A. The size of the fossil. B. The absence of fake fossils.
C. The complexity of the skeletons. D. The consistency of the opinions.
31. What is the function of the last paragraph
A. It offers a cause. B. It highlights a solution.
C. It supports the conclusion. D. It provides a new discovery.
D
A rare genetic skin condition has been corrected for the first time using a gene therapy that is applied to the skin.
About 1 in 800,000 children in the US are born with a severe condition called Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (不良性大疱性表皮松解症) that makes their skin extremely weak and likely to be torn and blister.
“It is very painful,” says Vincenzo Mascoli, 22, who travelled from Italy to the US to have the gene therapy. He had open wounds all over his body, including one covering his entire back that had been there since he was 2 years old. “Sometimes I also get blisters in my eyes and have to keep my eyes closed, and sometimes I get blisters in my throat that make it difficult to eat,” he says. Mascoli and other people with the condition have weak skin because they have an improper version of a collagen (胶原) gene called COL7A1. That means their skin can’t produce the collagen proteins needed to give it structure and strength.
Peter Marinkovich at Stanford University in California and his colleagues developed a way to insert normal COL7A1 genes into the skin of such individuals so they can start producing collagen properly. “All it does is go into the cell and deliver the gene,” says Marinkovich.
The gene therapy was then incorporated into a gel (凝胶) so it could be applied to the skin. It was tested in a late-stage clinical experiment in the US involving 31 children and adults with RDEB, including Mascoli.
The treatment was repeated weekly until the wounds closed. After three months, 71% of the wounds treated with the gene therapy had completely healed, compared with 20% of those who had the ineffective gel applied, and there were no serious side effects.
A US company called Krystal Biotech has partnered with Marinkovich and his colleagues to develop the gene therapy and will apply in the next few months for approval to make it available to more patients in the US.
32. What do we know about RDEB
A. It is a serious skin disease on children.
B. It brings unbearable pain to the patients.
C. It makes patients’ skin weak but seldom blister.
D. About 800,000 children in the US suffer from it.
33. Why do the patients with RDEB have weak skin
A. They don’t have the gene called COL7A1.
B. They don’t deal with the wounds properly.
C. Genes on them fail to provide right proteins.
D. They have serious side effects after treatments.
34. What do we know about the new therapy
A. It was developed by Krystal Biotech.
B. It has proved highly effective on all patients.
C. It will be applied to patients in a larger scale.
D. It has positive effects on patients immediately.
35. What is this text probably taken from
A. A biography. B. A course plan.
C. A mathematics paper. D. A science magazine.

The transition from high school to college is a major one, and successful adjustment to college has lifelong influences. Maybe you are about to make this transition yourself or have children who are about to leave the nest. 36 If you know someone who is making this transition or know parents guiding their soon-to-be adult kids through this time, please share this collection of research-based tips with them.
37 Almost everyone is in the same boat as you are, hoping to make friends quickly. Your success in college depends, in part, on surrounding yourself with others who can support you and help you have fun.
Don’t be afraid to talk to your professors or teaching assistants. Successful adjustment is about reaching out for help when you need it. This means trying to find the answers on your own first, but then contacting those who can help you when you can’t. 38
Lean on your family. Family support can give you comfort when classes are hard or you are stressed about finals. 39 Strong support from family is linked to lower loneliness and depression during the first year of college and higher academic adjustment including motivation and concentration.
Be confident. Feeling anxious about communicating with fellows, professors, and speaking up in class is associated with lower adaptation during the transition to college. 40 The more you speak up in class, the easier it becomes.
A. That is what they are there for!
B. This list is exactly what you need.
C. Joining clubs is also linked to feelings of belonging at college.
D. Be open to making new friends as soon as you set foot on campus.

Niesha could not forget the way she froze in front of the class.
Mr. Roberts divided the class into groups to do presentations. It was Niesha’s turn. However, her hands shook so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she didn’t finish. He also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Roberts hesitated, “If I give you another chance tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage ” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mom was baking. Mom studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha ”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Mom was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class ” Mom asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Mom to her bedroom. There Mom showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings (剪报) and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first — not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”, said Mom.

B 29. D 30. C 31.C
根据第一段的“That dinosaurs ate the mammals (哺乳动物) that ran beneath their feet is not in doubt. (恐龙吃跑在它们脚下的哺乳动物是毫无疑问的)”,第二段的“two animals seemingly locked in a life-and-death fight. The one on top is a mammal. (两只似乎陷入生死搏斗的动物。上面的是哺乳动物)”,和第三段的“These days it is uncommon for small mammals to attack much larger animals. But it is not unheard of. (如今,小型哺乳动物攻击大型动物已经不常见了。但这并非闻所未闻)”可知,虽然恐龙吃哺乳动物是毫无疑问的,但最新发现的一个化石表明在一场生死搏斗中,哺乳动物占了上风,并且小型动物攻击大型动物也并非没有。由此可知,有时情况会发生逆转,即公认的捕猎者反被猎捕。因此猜测,划线部分意为“捕猎者成为猎物”。故选B。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段的“These days it is uncommon for small mammals to attack much larger animals. But it is not unheard of. (如今,小型哺乳动物攻击大型动物已经不常见了。但这并非闻所未闻)”和下文“And Dr. Han and his colleagues point out that those mammals which eat dead bodies typically leave tooth marks all over the bones of the animals. (韩博士和他的同事们指出,那些吃尸体的哺乳动物通常会在骨头上留下牙印。恐龙的残骸上没有这样的痕迹)”推知,提出恐龙化石的骨骼上没有牙齿印是为了表明它很有可能是在活着时被小型哺乳动物猎杀的。故选D。
30.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“More and more convincing fakes have emerged, as this one did-though Dr. Han and his colleagues argue that the complexly connected nature of the skeletons (骨骼) makes that unlikely, too. (越来越多令人信服的假骨头出现了,就像这一具一样——尽管韩博士和他的同事们认为,骨骼之间复杂的连接性质也使这种假骨头不太可能出现)”可知,骨骼之间复杂的连接性使得Dr. Han和他的同事们认为化石是真的。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据第一段“Now an extraordinary fossil newly described in Scientific Reports, unearthed by a team led by Gang Han at Hainan Vocational University of Science and Technology in China, shows that sometimes the tables were turned. (现在,由中国海南科技职业大学的韩刚领导的研究小组在《科学报告》中发现了一种不同寻常的化石,它表明,有时情况会发生逆转)”以及最后一段“From nose to tail, the dinosaur is just 1.2 meters long.

Dear David,
I’m thrilled to tell you that I won first prize in our school’s “Capture Spring on Campus” photography competition, whose aim was to motivate students to appreciate the beauty of nature and capture unforgettable moments of spring on campus.
My winning photo was taken in front of the library, where a cherry blossom tree was blooming. Pink flowers gently fell onto the ground while students were sitting on the grass reading or chatting. Not only did the winning improve my confidence in pursuing photography, but it also inspired me to find the hidden beauty in school.
What about the spring on your campus Looking forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
It was the second time she had been told the same on that day. She stared at the precious blue ribbon, picturing her Mom tried her best to overcome her fears to deliver a great speech. Sensing Neisha’s anxiety, Mom comforted her and tied the blue ribbon onto her wrist with a sweet smile. Determined, Neisha gritted her teeth to find her courage. She stood in front of the mirror, continuously practicing her speaking and gestures, even though sleepiness fell upon her.
Paragraph 2:
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. As she began to speak, her voice was still shaky. But the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon, courage found its way back. She looked down at the ribbon whenever her confidence wavered, and with each glance, she found the strength to continue. After the speech, Niesha cast a glance at Mr Roberts who stood in the corner giving her a thumbs up. A comforting smile spread across Niesha’s face, as she knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the practice and in the frustration.

Text 10
W: Hi, everybody. Do you know Bollywood Today I’d like to tell you about it. Bollywood, which is the name of the film industry in Mumbai, India, makes almost 1,000 films a year. Since making its first film in 1913, Bollywood has made over 29,000 films. This is a much higher number than Hollywood in the USA and means it is the biggest film industry in the world. Most Indians like watching films better than other free-time activities like traveling or doing sports. Ten million of them go to the cinema every day. Bollywood films tell love stories, and singing and dancing are an important part of every film. Indian films are also enjoyed outside India. Indian actors make more films each year than American actors in Hollywood, but they are not paid as much. This is why most Bollywood films only cost about $2 million to make. Hollywood film is never made for under $5 million. Most Bollywood actors are young. They work hard but only for a few years. Amitabh Bachchan, who some people say is India’s greatest actor, is different. He has been working in the film industry for 40 years, and has been the star of more than 140 films. OK, that’s all for today. Thank you for your listening.
