Listen to Molly (M) and Kate (K) discussing the story “Satisfaction Guaranteed”.M: Don’t you think that was a great love story, Kate?
K: No, not really!
M: You didn’t ? Well, I loved it. There was so much emotion between Tony and Claire.
K: Molly, that’s rubbish. Tony was just a machine. Yes, maybe Claire fell in love with him, but I don’t believe robots can feel emotion of any kind. That’s the difference between them and us.M: Well, I disagree. I think Tony loved Claire. Remember he said to her that he didn’t want to leave her the next day, and that he felt more than just the wish to please her? Then he kissed her.
K: Yes, Molly, but that was just part of Tony’s role. They made him so he couldn’t allow a human being to be hurt . He could see that Claire was hurting herself by her lack of confidence. So he tried to make her feel good about herself. It had nothing to do with emotion- that was just how he was made.M: Yes Kate, but he did hurt Claire.
K: How?
M: He was so kind to her that she fell in love with him. So it must have hurt her when he was taken away.
K: True, true. I guess that’s why the company had to rebuild him…er…the machine I mean!
M: Yes, such a shame really. I’d like a robot like Tony living at my house. Imagine a handsome man whose only purpose in life is to please you!
K: Actually, I suppose that was the company’s greatest mistake.M: Er?
K: They made the robot look so much like a real man, so it was bound to cause trouble!
M: Yes, you’re right. Imagine it is the future and people have household robots in their houses to do the housework. Discuss what positive or negative effect the situation would be.DiscussionI think it is wonderful for people to have robots in their houses to do the housework. After a day’s work, when people get home, they can be really relaxed with everything prepared by their robots. A robot never gets tired, nor does it complain. Life will be very easy and comfortable.Group workMaybe people can enjoy a very comfortable life with the help of their robots. But at the same time I believe people will lose the ability to do housework. As time goes on, people cannot live well without a robot’s help. I think that kind of life would be terrible.Group work Imagine you are engineers in a company that makes robots and you have been asked to design a new type of robot. 1. A robot at home
2. A robot in a workplace
3. A robot in the street
4. A robot in a place or anywhere elseGroup workYou may follow the steps:1. Decide the purpose of the robot.
2. Make a list of the abilities the robot has.3. Draw a picture on a piece of paper and name its parts and explain what each part does.
4. Write a paragraph describing the robot and what it can do.Group workLet’s divide into four groups to design your robots.
It’s time to design your group’s robots.Group workTips on designing your robotsFor each robot that you build, you will have to choose options for six major robot characteristics.
These are:1. Looks: What does the robot look like? Is there a reason for it to look as it does?
2. Sensing: How does the robot “know” or figure out what’s in its environment?3. Movement: How does the robot move within its environment?Tips on designing your robots4. Manipulation: How does the robot move within its environment?
5. Energy: How is the robot powered? Can it have more than one energy source?6. Intelligence: How does the robot “think”?Write a short summary of Asimov’ life in 150—200 words. 1. Look back at the timeline of Asimov’s life.
