Teaching plan for Book2 Module2
Part 1 The analysis of the teaching material and the students
This module shows the dangers of smoking and taking drugs through listing the facts of smoking and drug using. For the sake of the health of human beings, the text gives us the measures of giving up smoking and stopping taking drugs. This module is very important in educating the teenagers to take care of their lives. The reading passage contains two parts—the danger of using cocaine and a drug addict’s story. It can make the students have a clear understanding of the danger of drugs. The students are also very curious and lack of self-discipline, so it is necessary to warn them to stay away from any kind of drugs.
Part 2 The teaching aims
Knowledge aims:
To let the students know what cocaine is and crack cocaine and Adam’s story.
To let the students learn the words, phrases, and sentence patterns about taking drugs and stopping taking drugs.
(2) Ability aims
To improve the students’ abilities of reading, writing and speaking.
To train the students’ abilities of working individually and in pairs.
(3) Emotion aims
To let the students know the dangers of taking drugs
To educate the students to keep off drugs and take care of their lives
Part 3 The important point and difficult point
The important point is to let the students know the words, phrases, and sentence patterns about taking drugs and stopping taking drugs.
The difficult point is to let the students discuss the reasons why people take drugs, the bad effects of using drugs and how to keep off drugs
Part 4 The teaching and studying methods
I will mainly use “Communicative Approach”, “Whole language teaching”and “Task-based language teaching”. In other words, the students will carry out lots of input and output activities by means of reading, discussing and speaking both in pairs and individually. At the same time, I’ll make use of the modern electrical teaching equipment.
Part 5 The teaching procedure:
Step1.Pre-reading (3mins)
Before class I will first play an MV of a song called Wait till you hear from me.
Just now, we have enjoyed a song and ask them the following questions to lead in the topic of the class.
What’s your feeling after listening to the song?
What’s the song about?
What can we learn from the song?
So today our topic is about drugs. First, let’s learn some new words. I will teach the new words by showing some pictures.
So we can say The drug addict is addicted to addictive drugs. (Pay attention to their pronunciation.)
Step2. While-reading (20mins)
With all the new words in mind we are ready for the text.
Activity1. Fast reading Task1: Read the two articles on page12 and choose their titles.
□A Drug Addict and His Story
□Dangerous Activities of Teenagers
□The Dangers of Using Cocaine
Task2: Read parts 1—6 on page13 and decide which article they belong to.
But these are just the beginning of two articles. Look at your text book page 13—there are 6 parts. Some of them belong to Article 1 and some of them belong to Article 2. Please read through the 6 parts and decide which parts belong to Article 1 and which parts belong to Article 2. A secret for you: Usually by just reading the first sentence of each paragraph we will be able to know what’s the paragraph is about.

Article 2→_______________________________
Now by learning these two passages you can help Xiaoming. Who is Xiaoming? Xiaoming’s friend likes to have a drink in the pub. Once he was introduced to some drugs. Xiaoming is worried about him, but he doesn’t know how to persuade his friend. Could you help Xiaoming and tell his friend the dangers of using cocaine? We need to read article2 first.
Activity2. Careful reading
Read Article2 → Part 1 → Part4 and answer the following two questions.
1. What’s cocaine? What is crack cocaine?
2. What is the bad effect of using cocaine?
(Line down the answers on your book)
Now you can help Xiaoming to tell his friend the danger of using cocaine.
Cocaine and crack cocaine are both powerfully_________ drugs. Drug users are easy to _______ _______ ___ them. Using cocaine _________ the user’s heart rate and ______ ________. As a result, cocaine users sometimes _____ ______ ________ and anti-social(反社会的) behavior.
But Xiaoming’s friend didn’t believe him and Xiaoming took his friend to Adam who told them his own experience. Now let’s look at Adam’s story in detail.

Step3 Post-reading
From what we have learned today, we know using drugs does great harm to one’s life. But I still have the following questions:
Why do people still try the drugs and become addicted to it?
What bad effects does using drugs have on our life?
How to keep away from drugs as a teenager?
Let the students discuss in group of 4 and write down their ideas. I will let the group leader choose one piece of A4 paper with one of the topics on it. And let them make a poster and introduce their ideas to the class.
After the discussion, let the students look at some pictures to remind them that actually drugs are around us. They just have some common faces. In the end, the students all stand up and raise their hands to swear: I swear today I will keep away from drugs in my life and try my best to realize my beautiful dream and our great China dream! Say no to drugs forever!
Step4. Homework:
1. Write an email to Xiaoming’s friend about what you have learned today.
2. Read the extensive reading passage to know more about drug use in Britain.
3. Alternative: Try your best to learn the song Wait till you hear from me.
Extensive reading:
Read the magazine article. Match the headings with the paragraphs.
A. Teenage drug use C. Why do teenagers take drugs?
B. Drug problems in the UK D. Treatment
1._______________
Drug use in Britain has increased by 30% in the last five years. Use of hard drugs, for example, cocaine and crack cocaine, is increasing as a result of these drugs becoming cheaper and easier
to buy.
2._______________
Young people in Britain are more likely than other Europeans to take illegal drugs. UK teenagers are taking up to five times more illegal drugs, for example, ecstasy tablets and cannabis, than in other European countries. The most common drug for UK teenagers is cannabis. Over 35% of 15 to 16-year-olds say they have tried it. Harder drugs such as crack cocaine are less common. As many as one in twelve 12-year-olds have taken drugs.
3._______________
In the UK there are possibly 500,000 crack cocaine users. As a result, the UK spends £390 million a year on treatment centers to fight drug use. Treatment centers spend more than £3,000 to help every drug user. But only 3,800 drug users a year successfully go through the drug treatment.
4._______________
Teenagers gave the following reasons in order of importance:
to copy their friends and to look cool;
so as to have a good time and to feel good;
in order to see what it is like and to experience something new;
so as to like adults, but to be different from their parents;
because the drugs are cheap and easy to buy;
because they have nothing better to do with their time.
