Liu Lingli has been a teacher for hearing-impaired(听力受损的) children for 33 years. Her first communication with hearing-impaired people was with her neighbor, Mrs. Wang. One day, Wang used sign language(手语) to communicate with her, but Liu couldn’t understand. Wang’s husband told Liu that Mrs. Wang wanted to make her a scarf.

Workers can skillfully make materials, such as silk, cotton or wool into daily handicrafts like buttons and earrings.
Wang Xiaolan is an inheritor(传承人) of this Intangible Cultural Heritage(非物质文化遗产) from Chongqing. She has received training in the art of knitting and brought changes to this traditional handicraft. She successfully mixes knotting, weaving, drawing and other techniques to make products.
In 2019, Wang started a knitting workshop “Lanyuxuan”. To add a local flavor(特色) to this traditional art, Wang and her team have come up with new ideas for knitting pieces with cultural symbols in Jinfo Mountain, such as Dashu tea and bamboo. They have won many prizes in competitions and the products are loved at home and abroad.

Passage 9
(主题:人与自然·头发突然竖起来怎么办? 难度:★★★ 用时:8分钟)
A video went popular not long ago. In the video, there was
a group of tourists traveling in the desert in Turpan, Northwest
China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Suddenly they
found their hair standing on end, which scared everyone on the
scene. According to the tourists, their hair returned to a normal situation after they drove about 3 kilometers down the road.
Many people on the Internet said the phenomenon(现象) is a sign of a coming thunder and lightning. They suggested that the group should run away as soon as possible. However, Feng Minxue, an expert, said that running away is not the best choice in such a situation.
According to Feng, if a person’s hair is dry and there is too much static electricity(静电), there is still time to leave. However, if the hair has already stood on end, running may put the person in danger and it can even be fatal because it can form step voltage(跨步电压). The correct way is to
lower one’s body height. If they can’t leave the mountain top in time, they should quickly crouch down(蹲下) in that place, bring their feet as close together as possible and use their hands to protect their heads, avoiding touching the ground.
Wu Xueke, a professor, thinks that the clouds with electricity above the heads of the tourists caused the situation. The electric field distortion(畸变) above their heads became strong, and then it caused static electricity in their hair. In some serious cases, the person might be hit by lightning. Therefore, if people meet with such a situation outdoors, they should keep a clear mind and take action properly.

Passage 10
(主题:人与自然·不同地貌是如何形成的? 难度:★★★★ 用时:8分钟)
How do you describe the surface of one
thing Round Square Or smooth You may
have different answers. But we know that
we can describe the earth’s surface through landforms(地貌). A landform is a natural feature of the earth’s surface. Landforms come in different kinds of shapes and sizes. Mountains, hills, plateaus(高原) and plains(平原) are the four main kinds of landforms. A landform might be as large as a land or as small as a pool.
Landforms are made by some kinds of forces of nature. This force could be wind, water or ice. And it usually takes a very long time to form different landforms. It could be hundreds or thousands of years or even longer. For example, you may see a valley(山谷). It used to be a high hill, but with time going by, water and wind wear down high land into a plain, and then create a valley.
What are the differences among the landforms Valleys are located between hills or with many high mountains around. And there is usually a river at the bottom of the valleys. The delta(三角洲) is another landform created by water. It can be found at the mouth of a river and it flows into an ocean. A delta is created when sand, soil and rock mix together. Hills and mountains are another two landforms. A hill is raised land. A mountain is usually higher with a top. Most mountains are like towers but a few of them are like tables which have flat(平坦的) tops.

Passage 11(2024湖北改编)
(主题:人与自然·中国人极致的航天浪漫 难度:★★★★ 用时:9分钟)
So far, China has successfully sent a large number of satellites(卫星) and spaceships into space. Space scientists have been greatly inspired by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names.
Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Chang’e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China’s first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’e-1. It was sent into the space in 2007. More interestingly, the moon rover(巡视器) was named after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of Chang’e in the story. These old stories carry people’s best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true.
Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much ancient Chinese people wanted to know about the unknown world. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to “visit” the sun, because we have a space project called KuaFu Mission.
Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time. So, China’s first quantum(量子)
science satellite launched(发射) in 2016 was named Mozi, making China the first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between satellites and the ground.
From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can see how great our traditional culture is and what influence it has on our modern science and technology.

Passage 12(2024广东改编)
(主题:人与社会·听懂鸡的心情 难度:★★★★ 用时:8分钟)
People know animals do have feelings, but they are not
sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years,
scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs
and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the chickens happier and healthier.

Passage 13(2024重庆A卷改编)
(主题:人与社会·无人机引领低空经济“展翅高飞” 难度:★★★★ 用时:9分钟)
More than 100,000 people cheered at the breathtaking moment when about 3,000 drones(无人机) flew over in Chongqing on the Chinese New Year Eve. The about 10-minute drone show had 300 million views online.
In fact, drones are easy to operate. People send orders to the control system. Rotors(旋翼) push against the air to make the drone rise or stay in the air. By changing the angle(角度) and the speed of different rotors, the drone flies in all directions.
Drones can complete difficult and special tasks in a timely and effective way.
After an earthquake, drones can fly over blocked roads to find people or record any possible danger. Reaching the mountain village by road may take several hours, but drones provide information in just a few minutes.
For weak wildlife populations, drones can show where poachers are hiding and if they are carrying guns. At night, drones with infrared(红外线的) cameras can easily find them in the dark.
Drones also provide convenience for the public. For example, at a sports event, drones are used to give a view from above or help coaches see how their players are doing.
In a word, drones have been widely used in emergency, environmental protection, farming, transportation and others, with more fields on the way.
As drones are cheaper, more practical and less dangerous than planes or helicopters, drone flight activities have become the important driving force for the growth of low-altitude economy(低空经济). Besides well-known leaders like DJI, more pioneering companies have appeared. At the end of 2023, there were nearly 1.27 million registered(注册的) drones across the country. The drone industry is believed to be full of chances and possibilities.
