When I was seven coughing badly, she said no ice-cream for me.
But I talked back loudly, “I should be allowed to eat some! Give it to me now!”
When I was nine watching scary movies, she said it’d give me awful dreams.
But I shouted back angrily, “I should be allowed to watch it! I’m not a baby!”
When I was a teen going out with friends, she said, “Please be back by ten!”
But I talked back again — “I should not be told what to do! I’m seventeen now!”
Now I’m an adult, thinking back to those times.
I coughed for days after eating that ice-cream And had scary dreams after watching that film.
I was late for school from staying out past ten. I regret talking back, not listening to Mom. Mom knows best, and for me she wanted only the best!

The title means that a mother always knows what is best for her child, even though the child may disagree with the mother.

本诗为无韵脚诗,此类诗歌不强调行尾韵脚,无需考虑押韵的问题,且每行长短有别,其节拍性不如有韵脚诗那么强。
但是它并非毫无节奏,它往往通过相同的语句结构和反复重复的元、辅音发音进行弥补,令人读来别有一番情趣。
在本诗中,我们读到大量的When…, I should be allowed to …和I…语句,我们耳畔不停想起“I”音和“s(z)”音。这些语句结构和语音特点衬托出诗歌的复现性特征,加之各行自身的语句重音,体现了节奏感,弥补了失缺韵脚的不足。
在书写上,英文诗歌并非完全以句断行,这在有韵脚诗文中更为突出。
无论一行结句与否,移行后另行首字母均应大写。
另外,与中文习惯不同,英文诗歌作者署名一般标注于诗文结束,另行靠右侧书写,而非直接书于标题之下。
