Barbara Kingsolver is a Pulitzer Prize-winning US author. Her new book, Demon Copperhead (winner of the Fiction award in the Indie Book Awards 2023), is out now, published by Faber. She shared the books that changed her life.
Little Women, Louisa May Alcott
I read this book in the back of a car. I must have been in third or fourth grade, and my parents were taking us on a rare holiday. They put us in the back of the estate car and expected us to be quiet for as long as it took to drive to the Grand Canyon. Luckily, I can read in moving vehicles, and I just disappeared into Little Women. That was my first experience of really losing myself in a novel.
The Children of Violence series by Doris Lessing
This series of books rocked my world. They are novels connected by a main character, Martha Quest, and set in what was then called Rhodesia, where Lessing grew up. She was writing about sexism and racism in a time when those words weren’t really used yet. They had what was called the color bar back then, and as far as sexism, it was just called life. Nobody was remarking on it. But these books were about these big, universal themes that I was feeling so powerfully in my own life. It was what I saw in my little town. It was a revelation to me that fiction could be about these things that everyone in the world should be thinking about. That larger purpose of fiction was revealed to me through these books.
Cannery Row, John Steinbeck
I always loved to read, and I kept a journal since I was eight. As a young adult I wrote poetry and stories which l did not show to anybody. But I did not think I could be a writer. In my small town, my small world, it just didn’t seem possible. I thought, I don’t know anyone important. I just know regular, ordinary people. You can’t write about that. And then a book fell into my hands that was this exquisite novel about this funny group of ordinary people living in an ordinary place. It was like the scales fell from my eyes. It showed me fiction doesn’t have to be about famous people or heroic lives.
21. Where did Barbara Kingsolver read Little Women
A. In Rhodesia. B. On an estate.
C. At the Grand Canyon. D. In the car.
22. What is TRUE about The Children of Violence by Doris Lessing
A. It is the winner of the Fiction award in the Indie Book Awards.
B. It is about sexism and racism Martha Quest experienced in Rhodesia.
C. It is about big and powerful themes that I can hardly relate to.
D. It is an exquisite book about ordinary people in an ordinary place.
23. Which book gave me inspiration that I could be a writer
A. Demon Copperhead B. Little Women
C. The Children of Violence D. Cannery Row
B
When you go on a holiday, is your journey just an annoying inconvenience to get you there Have you ever been too busy thinking about the next place you’re going to visit to enjoy where you are Or do you ever return from a holiday exhausted from too much sightseeing If so, you might want to consider slow travel.
What exactly is slow travel It’s certainly not about doing everything at a snail’s pace or using the slowest form of transport. Instead, it’s about connecting to the local culture and the people who live there. The idea is that you experience life in any place you visit as if you were from there—if you were slow traveling, you might rent a place to stay, explore on foot or by local transport, shop in neighborhood markets and eat typical food from the area. In other words, you really get to know one or a few places rather than seeing only a little of many different places. Slow travel is a mindset —a way of thinking —it is about appreciating and making the most of every moment of your stay.
The benefits of slow travel are multiple. For a start, an important positive factor is that you’ll save money. Why Transport, especially flights and renting a car, is one of the biggest expenses on a holiday and using alternatives brings the costs down. Also, staying in an apartment or house means you can eat in and enjoy the pleasure of local shopping. Another advantage is that you’ll meet more local people who can tell you interesting places to go and give great advice. In addition, since you won’t be sticking to a tight schedule, you’ll have time to explore in depth and make plans as you go along.
The benefits don’t end there. Slow travel is less stressful too and you get to see places that you would never have seen otherwise. Getting off the beaten track and finding unexpected treasures, such as a beautiful square or a wonderful little restaurant that aren’t in any guidebooks, are half the fun of going to new places. You’re far more likely to remember these enriching experiences for years to come than visiting yet another museum, cafe packed with tourists or city filled with sightseers, just because all the travel books say they are the best places to go. Finally, slow travel is more environmentally friendly. As a result, not only will you reduce your carbon footprint, but you’ll also promote sustainable travel.
24. How does the author introduce the topic
A By presenting examples. B. By providing background.
C. By giving definition. D. By asking questions.
25. What do the underlined words “multiple” mean in paragraph 3
A. Limited B. Plentiful C. Impressive D. Unique
26. What can we learn about slow travel from the last paragraph
A. It is economical and flexible. B. It is slow and inconvenient.
C. It is time-saving and interesting. D. It is relaxing and green.
27. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text
A. To compare slow travel and special forces-style travel.
B. To give examples of the slow travel around the world.
C. To introduce what slow travel is and its benefits.
D. To list the advantages and disadvantages of slow travel.

Children are often exposed to diet culture from a young age and its negative impacts can be long-lasting, according to Virginia Smith, author of a new book titled Fat Talk, Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture.
“Kids, at a very young age, start to become aware of body shaming,” Smith said. “The main factors of children’s future eating disorder (饮食失调) are kids’ being ashamed of their weight and their history of dieting in childhood.”
In Fat Talk, Smith argues that one way parents can fight back against this is to take a fresh look at the word “fat”. “We can understand ‘fat’ as just a neutral body descriptor, just like saying tall or short or brown hair, black hair…” Smith said. “If your child in a bigger body comes to you, and he says, ‘Am I fat ’ you should be honest with him and say, ‘You’re fat. And there’s definitely nothing wrong with that. We love your body just the way it is.’”
Another suggestion from Smith is for parents to change conversations with and in front of children at home. “We can say I’m not going to shame my body in front of my kids and I’m going to celebrate bodies in all shapes and sizes,” Smith recommended. David Anderson, a parenting expert, added, “So if you have a child who’s in a bigger body, talk about their strengths.” David continued, “Helping our children concentrate on how our bodies work, how they allow us to achieve our goals… these are things we can remind our kids about every single day.”
Often diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but David said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture. But as children grow older, David encourages parents to be honest with kids about their own struggles and not to pretend they know everything and that kids know nothing about diet culture.
28. What might contribute to children’s future eating disorder
A. Body shape and peer pressure. B. Body image and parenting style.
C. Body change and food preference. D. Body shame and dieting experience.
29. What can be learned from paragraph 3
A. Kids should make peace with their body image.
B. Kids should take pride in being overweight.
C. Parents should teach their kids honesty.
D. Parents should give “fat” a positive definition.
30. What should kids focus on according to David Anderson
A. Their body functions. B. Their individual characters.
C. Their physical appearance. D. Their career achievements.
31. What does the underlined word “shield” in the last paragraph mean
A. Editor. B. Supporter. C. Protector. D. Connector.
D
Why do we laugh at movies like Office Space or shows like The Office What’s so funny about work
Steve from California shared. “During a meeting, my boss praised our colleague, saying how handsome he is. The team felt awkwardly surprised, until my boss corrected, ‘No — it’s great how hands-on he is!’ Everyone laughed, easing the tense atmosphere from the meeting. ‘Well, he is handsome, too!’ I defended jokingly, and we al laughed again!”
Office may seem like a serious place. But, according to a study, introducing some laughter into work life can contribute to our well-being and productivity. In fact, finding humor is one of the practices we teach students in our online course. The funny stories they shared remind us that a little playfulness goes a long way toward a more enjoyable work life.
Laughter serves to create and strengthen social bonds in humans — as well as in our chimp (黑猩猩) ancestors. One evolutionary theory claims that laughter first appeared in these ancestors as a response to signal that they are safe at present and a relief to others after something unexpected occurs. This also has implications in modern times, and it may explain why colleagues who laugh more together tend to enjoy a more safe or comfortable environment and a greater sense of unity among teams.
Feeling comfortable in our work environment can enable us to think openly and take risks — a basis for finding creative solutions at work, contributing to our productivity. According to one study, managers who use humor at work are more likely to reach their unit’s target goals. What’s more, employees who say that their manager “makes us laugh at ourselves when we are too serious” or “uses humor to take the edge off during stressful periods” are more likely to trust their manager, and feel a sense of belonging at work.
Of course, humor isn’t always called for — particularly if it’s a distraction from our tasks or keeps us from seeing and addressing real problems at work. But in many situations, sharing jokes with colleagues and finding humor in the chaos can make work a little more fun.
32. What can we learn from Steve’s sharing in the second paragraph
A. The meeting was always filled with laughter.
B. He helped relieve tension during the meeting.
C. The team was greatly frightened at his words.
D. The boss thought his colleague quite handsome.
33. What is the original function of laughter among our chimp ancestors
A. To create a comfortable atmosphere.
B. To better their bonds with humans.
C. To unite other members in the team.
D. To inform partners of their present safety.
34. What is the benefit of a manager’s using humor at work
A. The company is likely to make more profits.
B. The company will attract more job applicants.
C. The employees will feel more included at work.
D. The employees are more likely to work overtime.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. How to Strengthen Our Sense of Humor
B. How to Create a Fun Work Environment
C. How Humor Can Improve Our Work Life
D. How Important Being a Humorous Worker Is

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o’clock! Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the Phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning!”
It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.
“Good morning, Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend ” Jane said and pretended to be annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother’s birthday !
While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.
She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.

Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. Having learned about the details, Tom volunteered to clean the floor. It took him more than two hours to clean every corner in the house. For the first time, Tom realized how hard it had been for his mother and sister to keep the house clean. While Tom was working, Jane washed the dirty clothes and decorated the room with colorful balloons. When the cake arrived, everything was ready for the big moment.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Seeing the beautifully decorated room and the big cake on the table, their mother seemed to be very confused and surprised. After Tom and Jane told her what had happened, she could hardly hide her excitement and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” said their mother, who then took out her smartphone and made a video. “We should share this surprise with your father!”
