For those who have never been to Harbin there's almost an endless list of things to do. Here are several activities that have to be included.
Turning water into instant ice
One can’t go to the Ice Snow Word without stopping by the Sun Island Snow Expo. After all, the former is for appreciating illuminated (照亮的) ice at night, and the latter is for checking out snow in the daytime. Tourists from the south might be astonished by the bright sunshine reflected in the snow, so don't forget the sunscreen.
This is also a good place to toss water and watch it turn into ice instantly. Find a safe place with no one nearby, and enjoy the unique phenomenon.
Snow tubing (雪地滑轮胎) on the Songhua River
In winter, the Songhua River turns into "thousands of miles of ice" and becomes a natural ice-skating rink. The frozen river offers opportunities for many different winter activities. But make sure the ice is solid before going stomping (跺脚) in the snow.
Speeding down Yabuli Ski Resort
One place you shouldn't miss when visiting Harbin is Yabuli Ski Resort, where you can ski down splendid snow-covered mountains. The snow is thick and moderately hard. There are junior, middle and senior ski runs. Professional staff are available to improve your skiing ability.
21. Which is a good place to enjoy a night scene
A. Yabuli Ski Resort. B. The Sun Island Snow Expo.
C. The Songhua River. D. The Ice-Snow World.
22. What can visitors do in Harbin
A. Get professional guidance for free while skating.
B. Go down the world's longest ice slide on Songhua River.
C. Choose different routes based on their skiing ability.

“Twelve years ago, I was a professional dancer and black belt in taekwondo (跆拳道) when a disease went undiagnosed and wiped out my muscular system. I finally ended up on life support in intensive care with organ failure.” Kaufman recalled, “I went from living this big life to not knowing how I was going to survive. Fortunately, on my birthday in 2009, I received a new heart and was given a second chance at life!”
After volunteering in Los Angeles hospitals, Kaufman started the non-profit, Ava’s Heart. She and her organization offered transplant patients services that were often not covered by insurance, including food, gas, co-pays on medicines, and housing.
“What I found out was that if you didn’t have post-transplant-housing, you couldn’t get listed and admitted into the hospital,” Kaufman said. She learned that for the nearly 110,000 people in the US waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, it was not just a matter of adding your name to the list. Patients must be financially secure and be able to afford transportation. What’s more, they must find accommodations near their transplant hospital: Kaufman runs two housing locations, which allows the patients to remain close to their transplant hospital during the period of their aftercare, typically about three months at no cost.
Her organization also helps donor families, which she thinks makes the whole circle complete. “One organ donor can save eight lives and then there’s tissue and skin and eyes and blood vessels (血管) and so many other things,” Kaufman said. “The donor is the whole story. Without the donor, there are no transplant centers, no transplant surgeons, no me. In my eyes, the donors are the heroes.”
To date, Ava’s Heart has helped nearly 90 families with burial costs for their loved ones whose organs have saved countless lives. Kaufman also works closely with those who receive donations to build relationships with donor families and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.
24. Why did Kaufman talk about her memory in Paragraph 1
A. To illustrate the significance of life.
B. To recall her plain and boring days.
C. To indicate her motivation for paying back.
D. To confirm her enthusiasm for the profession.
25. For a transplant patient, admission into the hospital requires the following EXCEPT ________.
A. afford transportation B. health insurance
C. financial security D. nearby housing
26. Which of the following best describes Kaufman
A. Considerate and hardworking. B. Sympathetic and easy-going.
C. Brave and caring. D. Grateful and warm-hearted.
27. What message does the text mainly convey
A. It’s better to give than to receive.
B. Health matters much more than wealth.
C. The blessed bear the heart of giving.
D. Volunteering makes the world a better place.

Home to reefs, sharks and various fish, the Coral Sea is a unique reserve of biodiversity off the northeastern coast of Australia. If a proposal by the Australian government goes ahead, the region will become the world’s largest marine protected area, with bans on fishing, mining and marine farming.
The Coral Sea reserve will cover almost 990, 000 square kilometers and stretch as far as 1, 100 kilometers from the coast. Revealed by environment minister Tony Burke, the proposal will be the last in a series of proposed marine reserves around Australia’s coast.
But the plan attracts criticism from scientists and conservation groups claiming the government hasn’t done enough in protecting the Coral Sea. They even point out only half of the Coral Sea reserved is proposed as a “no take” area, in which all fishing would be banned. But the world’s largest existing marine reserve, established by the British government in the Indian Ocean, spans 554, 000 km and is a no-take zone throughout. Some people argue more of the Coral Sea should receive this level of protection.
The Australian government didn’t respond to the criticism. But Robin Beaman, a marine geologist, says the reserve does “broadly protect the range of habitats” in the sea. “I can testify to the huge effort that government agencies and other organizations have made to understand the ecological values of this vast area.” he says.
Reserves proposed earlier for Australia’s southwestern coastal regions have also been criticized for not giving habitats adequate protection. Some scientists pointed out the proposals for the southwestern region had not been based on the “core science principles” of reserves—the protected regions were not representative of all the habitats in the region, they said. Critics say the southwestern reserve offers the greatest protection to the offshore areas where commercial opportunities are fewest and where there is little threat to the environment, a controversy also leveled at the Coral Sea plan.
28. What do we learn from the passage about the Coral Sea
A. It remains largely undisturbed by humans.
B. It is extremely rich in marine life.
C. It is the biggest marine protected area.
D. It is a unique reserve of endangered species.
29. What does the Australian government plan to do according to Tony Burke
A. Complete the series of marine reserves around its coast.
B. Make a new proposal to protect the Coral Sea.
C. Revise its conservation plan owing to criticisms.
D. Upgrade the established reserves to protect marine life.
30. What does marine geologist Robin Beaman say about the Coral Sea plan
A. It can compare with the British government's effort in the Indian Ocean.
B. It will result in the establishment of the world’s largest marine reserve.
C. It will ensure the sustainability of the fishing industry around the coast.
D. It is an enormous joint effort to protect the range of marine habitats.
31. What do critics think of the Coral Sea plan
A. It will benefit Australia’s fishing industry.
B. It will do more harm than good to the environment.
C. It will offer the greatest protection that is very necessary.
D. It will protect regions that actually require little protection.
D
An artificial intelligence (AI) trained on personal data covering the entire population of Denmark can predict people’s chances of dying more accurately than any existing model, even those used in the insurance industry. The researchers behind the technology say it could also have a positive impact on early prediction of social and health problems.
Sune Lehmann Jorgensen at the Technical University of Denmark and his colleagues used the data covering various aspects of 6 million people from 2008 to 2020 from Denmark. They changed the data into words that could be used to train a large language model, the same technology that powers other AI apps. These models work by looking at a series of words and determining which word is statistically most likely to come next, based on vast amounts of examples. In a similar way, the researchers’ Life2vec model can look at a series of life events that form a person’s history and determine what is most likely to happen next.
In experiments, Life2vec was trained on all but the last four years of the data, which was held back for testing. The researchers took data on a group of people aged from 35 to 65, half of whom died between 2016 and 2020, and asked Life2vec to predict who lived and who died. It was 11 percent more accurate than any existing AI model used to price life insurance policies in the finance industry.
Jorgensen believes that the model has consumed enough data that it is likely to be able to shed light on a wide range of health and social topics. This means it could be used to predict health issues and catch them early, or by governments to reduce inequality. But he stresses that it could also be used by companies in a harmful way. “Clearly, our model should not be used by an insurance company, because the whole idea of insurance is that, by sharing the lack of knowledge of somebody who is going to be the unlucky person struck by some incidents or deaths, we can kind of share this burden,” says Jorgensen.
32. What makes Life2vec more powerful in forecasting death risks
A. It goes through a large number of tests.
B. It is trained on vast amounts of data.
C. It is intended for the government to make policies.
D. It uses the same technology as other AI apps do.
33. What does the underlined phrase “shed light on” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Recognize. B. Revise. C. Reveal. D. Resolve.
34. Why should Life2vec be kept out of the hands of businesses
A. To maintain the government’s authority. B. To remove social inequality.
C. To guard public interests. D. To keep its technology a secret.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Life2vec: Superior To Other AI Apps
B. Advanced Technology Addresses Social Problems
C. Insurance Companies: Keep Away From Life2vec
D. New AI Can Predict Risk Of Early Death

Gratitude (感激) is a useful tool for transforming negative attitudes and developing a more positive outlook on life. Rooted in the simple act of recognizing and appreciating the good in our lives, gratitude has great benefits.
Gratitude can significantly improve mental health. 36 This shift in focus can help reshape one’s mindset, promoting a more positive outlook. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Emotionally, gratitude encourages a sense of well-being and contentment. By acknowledging the positive aspects of life, people can defeat feelings of envy and regret. 37 Furthermore, gratitude helps individuals build emotional strength, enabling them to better deal with stress and adversity.
38 Expressing appreciation to others enhances social bonds and fosters a sense of community. When people feel valued and acknowledged, they are more likely to repay, creating a positive cycle of kindness and support. This can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections with others.
Incorporating gratitude into daily life is relatively simple but requires consistency. Keeping a gratitude journal, where one writes down things they are thankful for each day, is a practical way to develop this habit. 39 You can do that through a heartfelt note or a verbal “thank you”. Most importantly, scan your thoughts. Do they strengthen negativity If so, stop. Consider something for which you are grateful in that moment. That thought will begin a shift in your awareness. Do it again. By the third grateful thought, you will likely have many more that naturally follow. Always remember that feelings follow thoughts. 40
Gratitude is a simple yet powerful practice, and it holds the potential to transform lives and cultivate a more positive, fulfilling existence.
A. Gratitude strengthens relationships between people.
B. It can lead to increased happiness and satisfaction.
C. Wait to see whether feelings follow thoughts or not.
D. Another effective practice is expressing gratitude directly to others.
E. Of equal importance is asking yourself some questions.
F. When people focus on what they are thankful for, they think less about negative thoughts.
G. When you are feeling sad or angry, check in with your thoughts, and see what you find.

Ever since Jake first watched the 1988 Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea, he had dreamed of being in the Olympics. For years, he had worked hard to become a good swimmer, training and practicing. Two decades later, he was in Beijing, China, for his first Olympic performance, as part of his country’s swimming team!
The Olympic Stadium was packed with athletes from all over the world, all eagerly awaiting the start of the opening parade (入场式). The atmosphere was electric and everything seemed perfect. Almost.
Jake loved his red, white and blue official Olympic jacket with the Olympic rings on the back. But several minutes before, Jake had torn a hole in the left sleeve (袖子) of his jacket when it got caught in a gate.
“Too bad about your jacket,” his teammate, Ben, commented.
“I hope nobody notices it,” Jake sighed.
“Someone will,” Ben laughed.
Jake didn’t respond as he was already feeling annoyed and depressed after having to deal with his lost suitcase when they landed at the airport the day before. He could not believe how things were not going his way.
Suddenly, a lovely little girl about 8 years old came up to Jake and pointed at the tear in his sleeve. Jake smiled at her. The girl started speaking in a language he couldn’t understand, all the while pointing at his torn sleeve. Unable to catch a word, Jake turned to his teammates for help but all of them shook their heads with a helpless expression. At that moment, the little girl began to take off her own jacket that was marked with a red English word “China” and looked up at Jake eagerly, signing to Jake to do so.
“Oh, I get it. You want to try it on. Here you go!” Jake slipped off the jacket and handed it to her. The Chinese girl took it, bowed and took off with his jacket right away!
